I'm thinking of playing something from the virtuoso list or w/e next year. seems easier to play a long solo with music than to run the slight risk of forgetting some random articulation or dynamic.

what do y'all think? makes sense right? i have some of those solos, and they don't look all that difficult. just have lots of small details and stuff, but nothing that's impossible

anyone do that this year or before?

Even if you do learn a solo on the list, you are most likely to memorize a great deal of it. After learning "Ransom" this year, amke suer you devote a lot of time to it. It took me about two months before I was able to play the solo from start to finish. Go for it. Just must sure you practice a lot.

I played a "no memory requirement" solo for the first time this year, and I am very glad that I did. I memorized a solo in 9th grade, but it was really short and only two pages, and the next two years my solos were just too long to memorize on top of worrying about All-State stuff. I picked one of the easier ones from the list for region solo and ensemble, but for state I'm looking at doing a much more difficult one since there is more time.

As for UIL's memory rule, I really don't like it at all. There are so many solos not on this virtuoso list that are long enough and difficult enough to be on there, but I'm not going to complain too much because I really like the solo I'm going to do at state :D

If you're up for playing some harder stuff, then I would absolutely play off of the no memory list. For me, it worked out great this year because I could concentrate on other things like All-State and not have to worry about memorizing it. Good luck with it next year!

yeahhh

i play clarinet and i only played a non-virtuoso solo once, and that was my freshman year. and i got a 2 because i forgot a part of it lol

buttt last year i played Debussy's Premiere Rhapsody and got a 1

this year i played the 2nd mvt of Rozsa's Sonatina

and next year im playing Hindemith's Sonata for Clarinet

i'd say the virtuoso list is a good thing. and for the most part, with the exception of Rozsa's Sonatina (b/c it's SO fast), the pieces on it arent hard
