barisaxy08 Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 This is my second time and last opportunity to audition for drum major...and i am nervous as heck!!! it's 2 possible spots open and 14-15 people trying out. It's kinda down to like 4 that could possible get it...and it's kind of a battle of the best. who else is trying out for drum major and what is it like for u to go thru 2nd semester preparing for it and staying in the mindframe in order to get it??? Quote
Nancy08 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I am too. But we don't have as many trying out. I kinda think I have a chance but now I've probably jinxed (sp?) it... I'm actually not even thinking of the tryout's right now. I'm just trying to survive the week . Quote
ClarinetGlissandoInBlue Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 i'm thinking about entering the race. but i want to march for senior year you know? not sure if DMing is for me anyway. Quote
whitewing09 Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 im thinking of trying out im really nervous anyone have suggestions on how i should goabout conductin and crap Quote
Trumpet Master Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Just throw your hands up in the air, and wave them like you just don't care... but seriously just give it your all. I'm trying out!!! Quote
sax5warrior Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 I will try out and I will make sure I will succeed. Quote
barisaxy08 Posted March 30, 2007 Author Posted March 30, 2007 such positive attitudes...this is definitely needed for a good DM Quote
t3hZm4n Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 I'm trying out. All 3 spots are up for grabs, but there are a lot of really good candidates!!! I think I have a pretty legit shot though, if only because my announcement that I was trying out made all of the other candidates a lot more nervous. >=] Quote

Just think of a triplet subdivision between beats. I may be wrong. Quote
Band-Chica Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 It is like 2/4, so you're right. I'm trying out too. I was drum major this year, but that doesn't make me any less nervous. There are some people with great potential trying out this year. Quote
titancoaster Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 I am trying out, there are two spots for grab, but I am only going to be a junior. I am writing my essay now, practicing conducting, and am going to the practice lot every week between now and may. I really want to be a DM for my last state year. Quote
whitewing09 Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 what do you practice to? do they give you the music this early ? Quote
titancoaster Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 no, but in auditions they give you random tempos and time signatures and you must conduct them without looking at the met. So I am just trying to get a feel for different tempos. I am also conducting through last years show music. (It couldnt hurt) Quote
barisaxy08 Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 it really helps a lot when u sub-divide in order to maintain the beat in your head...rather than give yourself the downbeat all the time. Last year when I tried out...that really hurt me but now I'm getting the hang of it. Quote

titancoaster Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Yeah, we get the score to next years opener about a week before the auditions, and then must conduct it. I am praying that our directors let a junior be drum major, since it hasnt happened since the first senior class graduated (I am 99% positive thats true) Quote
bandnerdbea Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 I am trying out.... there are 3 spots open, 11-12 people trying out & I am one of like 5 people who are trying out as a junior.... I dont know how to prepare though because this is my first time to try out.... I watched try-outs last year but I am so scared that I am going to be the only one who is lost.... Can anybody help me & give me pointers as to how to prepare for this audition?!?!?!?! PLEASE!!!! luv bea Quote

I don't really think you have much to worry about. EDIT: But don't let that go to your head! Try your best, and when I visit next year, I expect to see you on one of those podiums! Or all three simultaneously!! ...What? Quote

whitewing09 Posted April 7, 2007 Posted April 7, 2007 i have to teach an up coming freshman something about marching, what should i teach? Quote

And if the freshmen can get that downpacked to where it's like second nature...then have it to where you teach him/her some personal things that you developed over the years. Quote
whitewing09 Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 i was thinking of teaching the basics then marching half time and double cuz there arnt alot of people that know how and they really need to know how Quote
