NSUMusician Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Here is a GREAT tip for tempos. Don't try and MEMORIZE a tempo. Memorize familiar songs that are at that tempo. For example, try and find a march that is at exactly 120 (most King marches at are 120) and memorize the tune. Then just sing that in your head and you should be able to conduct patterns much more easily. For me, I have the melody from Peacemaker march memorized and have for years. I can still sing it at exactly 120 everytime! Also, when working with your conducting, remember that your pattern must been seen from AT LEAST 30 yards away. Get a buddy and go out to the practice field, put them at random spots, and get them to see if that can recognize your pattern. If they can't follow you, ask them why. Chances are it will be because either your pattern is too small or you rebounds aren't defined enough. Lastly, when trying out you need to ask yourself a couple of questions: Why am I trying out? Will I be an asset as a DM? Why will I be an asset as a DM? Would I be better served to the band as a Section Leader instead? If conducting and doing discipline more important that playing and marching? Hey guys, if any of you want anymore tips, I'm more than happy to help you out. I've judged DM try-outs on the high school and college level and wouldn't mind talking with you a bit. Just drop me a PM and I'll give you my AIM name. Quote
whitewing09 Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 ^ i tried doing reagans opener in 03 ... lol it was kinda hard for me to stay consistant what other kindas questions should i aks Quote
ClarinetGlissandoInBlue Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I've kinda decided not to do DM. that'd be a bit too much for me. I'm going for NHS president, HOSA officer and a ton of stuff above that. some high leader position on the field is fine. Quote

barisaxy08 Posted April 17, 2007 Author Posted April 17, 2007 well...we usually try out and find out a day or two afterwards Quote

I've heard about those. What do you have to do? We only have try-outs for DM and a speech/vote by the presidential candidates. Quote
titancoaster Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 for section leader tryouts you: have an interview write an essay march box drill (left and right, while playing Bb scale) march diamond drill Quote
Nancy08 Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 Last two years they've announced it at the banquet, but this year they decided they wanted us to help with picking leaders, so they held the auditions pretty early... Quote
rdzsaxplaya Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Both Section Leaders and Dm's are auditioned the same day, then about an hour or two later results are posted up, we usually bring in judges to make there own input, imtrying out for section leader so yup, hope i make it Quote
barisaxy08 Posted April 19, 2007 Author Posted April 19, 2007 the only other position that is "tried out" for besides drum major is President and that's by votes Quote
Band-Chica Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 We usually find out a few days after auditions if we made it or not. It kind of keeps you guessing because my freshmen year they did it the day after auditions, and last year they took about three days or so. Anyway, we have to "audition" for President and Vice-President of band, but they're by votes. It's interesting to have the band hall covered in flyers. Quote
Nancy08 Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 DMs are the only people who try out at Leander. Everything else is by application, although I dont know if Pres/V. Pres have to give a speech...maybe. So has anyone else had auditions yet/found out who made it? Quote

titancoaster Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Auditions in THREE DAYS!!!!!! omg, i am freaking out. This has been the longest saterday of my life, and sunday is going to be longer, but tuesday will be the worst, trying to make it through a school day completly focused on that afternoon's auditions. I feel prepared, last year's drum major was correcting everybody else's conducting, but when I asked him about min he said it was really good, and couldnt find anything for me to fix. I am a good marcher, so now all I have to do is worry about the interview. I just hope I dont screw up! Quote
t3hZm4n Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 My audition is Friday... I'm pretty good at conducting (though I'm still suffering from a bit of a symmetry issue), but I'm still concerned about how I'm going to fit my marching skill teaching portion into the 2 minute time limit I'm allotted... Quote
barisaxy08 Posted April 30, 2007 Author Posted April 30, 2007 so our auditions are this thursday and im nervous/crunk at the same time!!! it's too many good canidates trying out and whoever turns out the best will truely be a great marcher...because the competition is incredible. AHHH...WHY MUST U HAUNT ME, THURSDAY!??! Quote
titancoaster Posted May 1, 2007 Posted May 1, 2007 Well, mine are TOMORROW! and i am wigging out. I have a pretty good chance , but the thing that will count against me the most is my age. I am a junior and everyone else audititioning is a senior (for next year). But I was a sophomore section leader, so i have the same experience as everyone else. Quote

So don't be discouraged because everybody else is older than you...look at it as a good thing. we don't even have sophomores in leadership at our school. Quote
