Salesmonkey Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 We let our members "feel free to celebrate" when they miss something. Celebrating usually involves 5-10 pushups and is used as a "mental reminder" to not mess up the same thing twice. Leaders can enforce it as well as drum majors and and directors. Most of the time its a self-discipline kind of thing though. We do Hindu before comps too. Its kinda like a stress relieving thing where you start of by rolling your neck, then shouldars with you chin on your chest, then roll down your back, seperate the feet, and hang tensionless for a couple seconds. Then do everything in reverse till your standing up straight again, reach as high as you possibly can for a few seconds, then throw everything down like a ragdoll so your back hanging tensionless. And repeat a couple of times until instead of reaching for the skies, you are called to attention. Its pretty relaxing if you ask me, but some people dont take it serious and goof off the whole time. GenericWit Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 I remember during section leader/drum major training, when they first made us run, my reaction was ".... wtf?" to be quite frank. But we started doing it then, continued through freshmen camp, and into full band camp. We did it all band camp, and I think it really got people ready to march at 172. I mean, we'd never gone that fast before and the fact that we're able to this year shows something. We didn't have to do pushups, but we did do crazy body strengthening stretches. Most of us broke a sweat before we even got to fundamentals. I say... thank God for being a section leader this year because... I was definitely happy to be teaching the low brass fundamental block instead of participating in it. I secretly think that that's a reason why section leaders work so hard and take all of the frustration and bad stuff and slavelabor that comes with it... because we get to do less fundamentals... lol. But occasionally the director will make us do push ups. Random things like not counting loud enough, getting behind the beat at one certain area of our show, etc... I think its good. I remember today during practice Linley told "the infirmary" to get in, and Roldan looks at them and says "WHAT'S WRONG WITH Y'ALL?" and I blurted out "They're flutes. That's what's wrong." and people around me start laughing. Good times. Not as good as "1 2 1 2 Scott is **** 1 2 3 ready pop." but still... And ummm... I don't know if we're technically allowed to make people do pushups/run/whatever. I've never come into a situation where I've had to. Maybe by Michael's standards but not by mine. P.S. While the flute section leaders threaten running... I told a freshmen in my section that consistently misses a line that every time he missed it, a kitten died. We've kept a dead kitten count. It's dramatically decreased. Quote

As for punishment/discipline, one lap for being late, two laps for forgetting instrument, x laps for forgetting dot books (where x=amount of pages missing) though this only happens in the early of the season, and five pushups at discretion, they can be given to anyone by section leaders, drill assistants, drum majors, directors, the people with the most honor (the not fat people) will give themselves pushups for screwing up a set. (like me). The low brass section does 'shups as a section. This year, our trumpet section is REALLY lax. I'ma try out for section leader for next season, and I won't have any of that, no sir! Quote

And for demerits it basically marching up and down the field a long time ridiculously fast. Or in past years, even marching around lake lobo [its only a real lake when it rains. alot.] Oh man, but i would rather do jumping and run laps for 15 minutes straight then do fundementals. Fundementals are sooo hardcore at my school. Especially Diamond Drill [does anyone else do this? its ridiculous! but effective] And slide excersice 6-to-5 steps at 180, then having to sprint to get water and back for all our water breaks. The worst part is, our director will absolutly refuse to move on from fundementals until its exactly how he wants it. We've seriously spent whole rehearsels in fundementals if we can't get it right. Marching band is sooo much more physical then people give it credit for. Quote

I remember those days during summer band where you'd spend 3 hours straight doing fundamentals... we don't get "water" breaks either since we all have camelbaks. Marching is pretty hxc. Quote

The only time that they do assign laps is when the freshmen don't bring out the pit stuff or speakers. As for push ups, we can get those if the band director assigns them for messing up way too much or not having as much dicipline as we usually do. I think it's totally necessary for the success of the band. Quote

It worked pretty well. No one wants the stand in the middle of 40 people doing pushups because of their mess up. It kinda enforced working with each other and for each other. Quote
