i know im not the only one. taking 4 tests that determine if you can walk if your a senior, its basically a test that was made by the man to bring the Texas student down.

Isn't this a genius revelation? In order for students to pass high school...they should have to pass their classes!

Of course, then you get kids from po-dunk little high schools in Texas that get into Baylor on their easy 4.0 and Valedictorian label, when kids from Dallas and Houston and San Antonio schools with a hard-earned 3.0 are forced to go to community colleges. There really is no right answer...

But i do despise the TAKS...But...I just passed all of mine with commended scores and I never have to take them again! Hahahahaha...

Why not have the SAT determine if you pass? It's pretty standardized, and everyone takes it anyways. I don't know...I've talked to alot of my teachers about it.

I just feel sorry for my brother who has to take them for the next three years. Believe it or not, I care about him and all my friend's younger siblings...

Who will be freshmen...

And at my mercy...

By the way, thanks crazyjakeup. I've been hanging around for a while, but I never really post...

I think they should have a test for people to take if they fail a class...and at the end of the year...if they can just pass the test then they can advance to the next grade...because people usually only fail one class and that messes them up from graduating and all that.

But seriously...i was semi-depressed the whole week of TAKS knowing that I had to take 3 TAKS test in a row. Being in that room is like being in a academic jail.

I actually don't mind them because my passing all of them allowed me to be exempt from all of my finals [except for band]  B).  And I don't have to take any TAKS ever again!!!

And thanks to exemptions and AP testing.. I have no finals..so my last day of school was yesterday.

dont even go there with easy 4.0cuz its not that much easier (at least here anyway)

besides theres like 12 people in my class tied for #1 and theres only 16 spots for top 10% yall big schools have like 80 people in yall s top 10% like at my cousin doesnt even get all A's and shes in the top which is like 80 people, we have to make A's in everything especially pre ap crap to be up ther

Not trying to sound harsh or anything, but if there are 12 people tied for #1, then I think it shows that it is easier. You look at larger schools and there is only one person ranked #1 because he/she earned it. Two people, although not very common, is understandable for a tie, but 12?

Granted, it is harder to be in the top 10% because less slots are available for smaller schools, but it also much harder to be in the top 10 ranks in a class of 500+ students for larger schools. I will say that smaller schools get the short end of the stick when it comes to top 10% because that number may wind up being anywhere from 8-20 people while large schools have 35-60 people.

As for Dallas and Houston students having to go to community college...I would say that isn't quite truthful. I know quite a few students that have a 3.0 GPA and are getting out of this area and staying away from community colleges (which really are not as bad as people claim them to be). Your grade does not ultimately determine if you get into a good college, but it certainly helps.

Of course, I was making massive generalizations and exaggerating to make a point, and I don't mean to apply them to every individual case. And I certainly didn't mean to antagonize anyone. I know my cousin is in a class of less than 100 and is Valedictorian, and I would never stretch to say that she got that position without working hard. Nor would I say that the competition for top 10% and top rankings is any less fierce in some areas than others.

As for my school....To be in the top 10%, you have to have a 4.48 or higher (We grade on a 4.5 scale). I don't think it's necessarily easier anywhere. I was simply saying, someone in the top ten percent at some school may have worked less hard than someone else who wasn't in the top ten percent, and thus gets automatic admission to a big name Texas school, whereas the person who might have deserved it more doesn't. It works both ways, too. Like you said, more people in bigger schools get admitted, so someone could have made into the top ten as number fifty nine out of sixty while another kid from a smaller school was number sixteen out of the fifteen that makes up the top ten percent.

And that, unfortunately, is why we need standardized testing. I just wish it didn't suck so hard. This wasn't supposed to be an argument, it was supposed to prove a point. :)

I totally understand, no argument intended. I do LOVE discussion though B)

I was just showing the disadvantages that both larger and smaller schools face. We, however, can't really understand the other unless we are a part of it. My school used to be a middle sized school (growing by more than 600 students throughout my high school years is just crazy), so I understand what the people for the top ten here used to go through. I would say now that we are a large 5A, my class and later classes have it easier than say the class of 2004 had it.

Yeah, I guess that's just how PISD does it.  ^_^

LISD does that too, starting this year. It's AMAZING!! I've only had to take one final this entire school year because of combined TAKS, AP, IB, and regular exemptions. :D

well we're on that 1-5 gpa thing, everyone takes the same classes and make the same grades according that scale. which is why everyones tied up if they did a 1-100 scale then ya we would have 1 or two people who stand out way farther then everyone else but my schools retarded
