Anytime we step onto the field he wants us to spill our guts out and to not get tired as the show goes on...He wants us to tune out the crowd completely, you shouldn't be able to pick out a face...everyone is faceless...He told us to get "arrogant" which is a tactic that he uses to help us build confidence...

I heard that during prelims "are you arrogant? Are you cocky? GOOD!"

I actually must say that Plano Seniors pre finals speech was quite invigorating. I know that your director at Timberview expects THE BEST (or at least that's what it seemed) but Plano's director was all about THEIR best. He had them take a quick poll at their warm up about whether they were ashamed of their placement (and the majority voted yes, they were) then he lectured at the top of his lungs into the long ranger about how he was ashamed that they were ashamed and how he was THRILLED with their performance earlier that day and no matter what ANY judge said, no matter what label was placed on them, Plano Senior's band would always perform to please themselves and the audience, and NOT to gain plastic trophies and wooden plaques.

It seemed to work out REALLY well.

Sure did, it's getting me pumped and I am not even doing anything...

Something that I witnessed that I really thought was pretty cool was "section time" that Sherman had. Before prelims, everyone got with their sections (the trombones/baritones over by a tree far, far away from the band, the tubas sleepign in their cases, etc.) and got focused and pumped up at the same time. It was a really neat thing to witness.

he also quoted 300 in his speech, although I don't know if he actually meant to or not.

towards the end he was just like "THIS IS PLANO!" with the same pauses and emphasis like the movie had. it was pretty sweet.

Haha Mr. Martinez does that sometimes...During games our section leaders have 2mins with us before we perform we usually pray and then we have our special chant "YOU KNOW SAXOPHONES!" and if you play Tenor or Bari you add an emphatic "LOW!"...and then Mr. Martinez had us watch a video of a student who goes to the Univ. of Louisville named Patrick Huges...Words can not explain just watch

i wish our band director would give us section time near the end of our warm up period. i do it anyways though.

before we go to warmups, i usually call my section over and we talk through the show, body moves, tempo changes, dynamics, etc. then we just stand together and focus-were really close so u can feel our mutual intensity-until we leave for the warm up area. then, after warmups, i say a few things to my section to get them focused and pumped. only problem is we have to hurry cuz we dont ACTUALLY get section time, were just the last section to leave

Thats just a tradition Sherman has. But sadly not all the sections held a sectional for Finals, because we had to warm up right after dinner.

its pretty easy for me cuz of the attitude weve created in the trombone section. we arent a section. we are one. the trombones are pretty much all brothers.

plus it also helps that i could physically enforce our meetings if i had too  that would defeat the purpose of the meetings tho

We always warmed up in sections before doing whole band warmups. This allowed us to have all the section pumping stuff in an organized manner that didn't interfere with warmup.

well, they'll listen to my partner leader, but they won't listen to me.

Odd, because last year, the section generally didn't listen to our Senior leader, but they listened to me.

it somehow became really mixed up.

I'd try to create that nice feeling in my section, but that didn't really work out to well last year. All the leaders who have been in charge of the flutes have agreed that the only way they will respond is by getting in their face, which is rather disappointing.

haha, last year towards the end of the season we had AT LEAST one flute player going home everyday in tears because we'd hafta get onto them so much.

but they did get better that way.

It was annoying, I really wanted to deck the Allen kid...the whole "JK Sherman, it's Dripping Springs" was messed up on so many different levels...I hated the 4A State bound bands that were all like "We are going to state on Monday!?" in arrogant and pompous manner...I wish I could tell you how many times I heard that...

just for the record, DS was not pleased with the "Sorry Sherman, it's DS" either. At first, we started applauding, but we stopped when we realized what that meant to Sherman. We'd have hated to be in Sherman's shoes. Also, I hope nobody from DS was talking about State on Monday because they'd have been wrong. We go Tuesday. ;)

Seriously though, the Band Director expects the entire band to be on their best behavior and show class. I don't think he was happy with the judging error either.
