When the book was released a few months ago, I kind of mourned the loss of the old book. I really liked it. Anyway, I decided to hitch a ride to penders and buy it. The guy told me the book was controversial cuz it was out of print. I was iffy about it then, and then I opened it up and looked into it, and I was even more iffy about it.

I don't like the book still. I hate it, in fact.

But, I don't mind the etudes. They just seem sort of generic and boring, but that's okay. I'll still practice my butt off on 'em.

Any other opinions?

Bam! Here's a quick link to the etudes.

Umm.....*ahem* but these are THE Arban's 14 characteristic studies....probably THE most famous and most essential core to a Euphonium music major (and Trumpets as well). It's not a new book at all, it's a section of 14 etudes that've been sitting in the back of the Arban's unabridged method for the last century. If you pursue music in college as a Euphonium player, you WILL learn these etudes at some point (most likely in your first year) whether it's the all-state book or not. The person who told you the book was controversial is a Fuc.ktard....you can't talk down to something so essential that is the pure and utter epitome of "standard". It's like saying that you shouldn't eat bread products because bread is so "last week" and controversial.

Who chose the etudes for this year and wrote this performance guide in the link? Whoever it is, they'll be "premiering" these selections this weekend at the Texas Bandmaster's Convention. The writing style kind of reminds me of Dr. Bowman *looks it up* Oh.....Dr. Howey! Awesome, I'll studying with this guy next year at Sam Houston

I personally liked the old voxman book better coz the etudes favored musicality over technique. Its still better to be doing etudes out of the arban book than that bousquet crap they pulled in 05

- just my opinion though

Yeah, the Bosquet sucks.

Felt more like a book of scale exercises than etudes.
