the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 I'm about to buy some gloves for my uniform but I dont know which type (cotton or leather) would be best for clapping for commands. I know cotton muffles it a bit more but i havent heard about the leather ones yet. In your opinion, which would produce a clearer hand clap sound on the field? Quote
TRtrumpet Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 My guess would be that the leather gloves would be better, but im no so sure... Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted July 27, 2005 Author Posted July 27, 2005 ahh I see. Well my director is all "Its not gonna work" and blah blah blah but to most bands, that have used cotton gloves, it seemed to work just fine. By the way, what about gloves with rubberized gripper dots? Or just all leather with air holes? Quote
Kelly11 Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Cotton would be more comfortable, if your really hot the leather will stick to you, and it'll feel nasty icky gross. It will be louder when u clap, just try the cotton, clap really hard. I think you should want to be comfortable...right? Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted July 27, 2005 Author Posted July 27, 2005 being comfortable is must but i want whats best for the marchers so that theyll be able to hear the claps, even if it means not getting the cotton lol but in all leatehr will sound less muffled, right? ideas: cutting out the palms of cotton gloves so that ill be clapping with my palms instead? lol Quote
Kelly11 Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Im trying to figure out what our head dm had, she needed the long white gloves (our dm's did tuxes and a evening gown) but they weren't cotton, u could hear her clap, I wanna say is a polyester glove. It's breathable fabric thats tight on your skin, so u could hear a clap better, I wish I knew what they were made of. You could get a little hat with hands and pull the cord to clap, problem solved! Dynasty Posted July 27, 2005 Posted July 27, 2005 Is it really necessary that YOU clap and make a tempo? I mean, can you use a temple block and a drum stick? My vote's on cotton, because they are cheap and breathable. I just clapped in them and it was fairly easy to produce the 'popping' sound. Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted July 27, 2005 Author Posted July 27, 2005 well yes we must clap to keep in tempo. but actually our new director is trying to get my head director to use a block and drum stick sso that we wont have to clap during rehersals but it is necessary for us to clap for tempo during halftime performance and contest performances kelly thats a cool hat!! i want one! haaha Quote
Clarinot Posted July 28, 2005 Posted July 28, 2005 I get having to clap at performances, but why can't you use a metronome during practice? Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted July 28, 2005 Author Posted July 28, 2005 well at my school my director likes to think he's the metronome so he just counts the steps..blah i really would like to use the metronome though its more accurate. We also dont have a tower...lol i think my director needs to step it up. However he did finally get those transportable microphones with a speaker lol Quote
Will_Doohit Posted July 29, 2005 Posted July 29, 2005 I use the cotton gloves with rubber gripper things on the palm. Those gloves are really good and comfortable. And you can still clap pretty good in them. Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted July 29, 2005 Author Posted July 29, 2005 ooo ok so is there any more suggestions as far as types go? Quote
Chives Posted August 2, 2005 Posted August 2, 2005 I'd go with cotton or polyester. Yeah, it'll be a little more muffled than leather, but leather gloves just look funny with most band uniforms. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted August 3, 2005 Posted August 3, 2005 we got our band director to conduct with those and a mickey mouse sorceror's apprentice hat on at our last concert. it was sweet. Quote
Chives Posted August 6, 2005 Posted August 6, 2005 I had some of those Mickey Mouse gloves but never had the nerve to use them at a game. Quote

You can just see the DM clapping. That's what I did in the pit. Quote
the_DRUM_MAJOR Posted August 8, 2005 Author Posted August 8, 2005 hahaha mickey mouse gloves thats awesome..good idea for homecoming game..i just might do that hmm i think i might end up with leather? speaking of band directors, mine agreed to march the full show at halftime during one of the games after AREA if we a person sells 20 or more items on the fundraiser and their name gets picked from a drawing for them to march their spot. lol great way to motivate sales Quote
