Oct. 6th Mesquite Marching Festival

I was talking with several of my band friends today, discussing how marching band can be a little tedious until contests start. I mean playing for the crowd at football games is cool and everything, but at band contests, the entire crowd is there for band, so you know they're gonna be watching intently and not being noisy ( like at games).

 

Anyways that just made me think about how I *can't wait* for Oct. 6th to get here as that is my band's first contest. We're gonna be at the Mesquite contest...anyone else going and/or excited for their first contest performance?

absolutely. this will be the first time we've finished the drill before the week of the first contest (we do GPISD pre-uil festival). in years past, we always finished the drill a few days before that first contest. two years ago, with the hurricane rita, we finished the drill the friday before UIL.

 

this will be my last, first contest of the year.

This will be my last, first contest of the year also. That's why I'm really hoping we do well and show everyone how far we've come in the past couple of years (my school just opened in 2005).

ours opened in '03. varsity sports and band started in '04, when we only had freshmen, soph, and juniors.

same here....except it was 2006, but we only had fish, sophomores and juniors. This is our first year to have seniors and I'm in the first graduating class

nice. our school's fist ever "show" as a band (they were only an exhibition group at this time) was also Phantom. they didn't have uniforms even, so they wore black shirts, slacks, and they wore a mask in lieu of a hat.

 

what exactly does "RH" of RHHS stand for?

haha...Rockwall-Heath...our school board decided to call our school a longer, annoying to say name because they wanted to make it clear that it's part of Rockwall School District. They said if they had just called it Heath High School (which is much easier to say), then people would get confused and stuff...I think it's dumb reasoning...

We're not gonna be at the Mesquite competition but i feel like i fit in here. School just opened in '03, this is my last year, and our district insists on calling us Frisco Centennial, not just centennial.

And boy are we looking forward to our first competition! The level of appreciation is a hundred fold in competitions when compared to football games. You have no idea how many complaints and insults we get during games, both away and home. Obviously there's still much more we could do during games to support the team. I love the game and I truely support our team, but when people start yelling at our BDs and throwing stuff at our players and instruments... **** that just pisses me off.

Wow...we don't have to deal with any of that. There are a *select* few varisty football players that use to like to run over our cones and park on our field even though we had that part of the parking lot coned off, but after our director called the towing company and the football kids came out after practice to see their cars about to be taken away by a tow truck...they stoped parking there .

 

Also there are the kids that like to mess with the drumline (which I'm in) by dancing around us and stuff when we're in block playing outside the gym before a pep rally, but after we totally ignore them they stop. And if we are marching there are people that like to stand in front of us because they think we will go around them...how wrong they are...

 

Besides those few idiots, our friday night crowd and school are pretty supportive.

dang. our school is so nice. we have so much school spirit and patriotism.

 

when we played against Westbury at Butler Stadium, HISD, the security guards commented to our directors and principals how nice our crowd was. Our fans always applaud for both bands and never boo (except for the occasional BS call by a blind ref)

 

i guess we're lucky.

 

 

as for the parking lot practice thing, we've had cars towed and booted before, keeps people away.

ohh well our general crowd is always very appreciative. They always applaud both bands, even when the other band leaves something to be desired. It's just a very small number of kids at my school that annoy me.

Hey... I'll tell you this - things have definitely gone for the better. And stuff like I said earlier doesn't happen too often, but it still does. I believe this year is like a new beginning for our band/everything else relationship. Atleast at away games.

Yah... I'll agree with Wang, but I know the instant our Cross town rival game (CHS vs. FHS) come along... here comes the booing, and sodas thrown at us...

 

but at least it's from the other team, not ours =]

So Coppell is going to win in a walk, but the 3A and 4A competition is still fun. Mesquite ISD schools are rated, but not eligible for awards, so I predict Sherman will win Best in Class 4A. 3A should be an intense battle between Canton and Wills Point.

I wouldn't count out the possibility of Poteet at least giving Coppell a run for their money.

 

And I agree that the Wills Point vs. Canton showdown will be huge!

ha! we beat poteet at this contest last year (even though it wasnt a "pre-lim final" event)... coppell will have no problems. but then again they got beat by poteet last year at the same event... nevermind what i said check out the 2006 results

Oh, I don't doubt that Poteet could come in first overall. They just won't be eligible for the Grand Champion trophy.

 

This makes me miss the days of 4A Coppell. The Poteet/Coppell showdown in Area C every other year was pretty awesome.

Mainly I'm gonna be focusing on the 4A bands to get a feel of what bands have a chance at state.

 

4A bands:

10. J.J. Pearce

and of course

11. Poteet

 

Should be interesting to see if anyone's predictions change after this contest.

Interestingly enough, all of the 4As except for Sherman are in Area C. Just add Waxahachie, Midlothian, and Pine Tree and you basically have the whole picture.

We might be going to this. They told us we would be able to get in if we chose to go.......

 

 

 

The thing is, we're scheduled to go to BOA next week....... but we perform at 8:00am. First. Doh!

We have a game on Friday the night before so we're not sure about how we're going to get therej. And if we do go how well we would do without much sleep and all the craziness.....

 

 

 

So either this or BOA. It's up in the air. Our directors will tell us their decision tomorrow.

 

 

 

If we end up going to Mesquite, I'll see y'all there! =D

Darn. Sherman should have gone to the Carrolton one. That way Carrolton would be like a complete area B (except for Birdville) preview and this one could have been like an area C preview (except for the three already mentioned).

So I get to see Poteet's show this friday as we are playing them...has anyone already seen it and/or know what it is. One of my friends that use to go to Poteet said it's something about New York or Manhattan right?

 

Also anyone seen and/or know what Pearce's or Sherman's shows are this year. I have tried to find video of any performances this year but have been unable to locate any.

Yes it is NYC themed. They're playing selections from Richard Danielpour's "Urban Dances" and Leonard Bernstein's "On the Town Suite." I have no clue about Pearce or Sherman. Anyone care to enlighten us?

 

It would be sweet if Akins went to MMF (at least I'm assuming that is where BassoonPadwan attends.) They would definitely shake up the 5A competition.

You know Canton and Wills Point gets to square off again next week in the Little Elm contest, and that one is prelim-finals, so best 2 out of 3 wins
