flutespaz21 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 There's already a forum about the best bands in the state. So what i want everyone to discuss here in who they think the top RISING bands in the state are... ( in all the sections 1A 2A 3A 4A 5A and say in which youre talking about) Quote
MaverickBand15 Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 McNeil, and Hendrickson are two big ones Quote
QuadraticBeats Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Two that I can think of just from my local experiences are: (listed in no particular reason except for organization) 1) Vista Ridge (my school - particularly if a well-liked and extremely competent assistant band director eventually becomes head director, or if some future turn of events unbeknownst to me occurs to make us accelerate our progress - but then again, we might just keep metaphorically bashing our heads against a wall, and hopefully break that wall despite how much of a headache it is to do so...), Leander School District 2) Hendrickson High School, Pflugerville School District Quote
dtxtrmpt Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Well I think that Dickinson(4A) is doing extremly well this year. We arent a new band. Dickinson used to be one of the top bands in the state, but then we had a change of directors and havent really gotten back to the same level of excellence. I hope to see Dickinson do very well this year. It would be great for us to become " The Pride of Dickinson" again. Quote
flutespaz21 Posted October 9, 2007 Author Posted October 9, 2007 those are all very true, but what do you think about lets say.... (thinking)... Hebron, Creekview, and all the other such bands in the same area as Marcus, Haltom, and LD Bell do you think they're being overlooked because of their high ranking competitors? and do you think its the same in other areas as well across the state? Guest Guest Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 The two bands that stick out the most to me are Clear Brook and Hebron. Clear Brook burst onto the scene last year at BOA SA, had a stellar show, and made finals in one of the hardest SA lineups in history. This year, they've followed it up at BOA Houston, placing second in prelims and fourth overall in finals. This band is making all the correct strides to becoming a perennial 5A powerhouse. Of course I have to gush a little bit about my band, but please tell me if you think I've gone overboard. Hebron has come a long way in the last few years. I remember when making finals at BOA was all I ever wanted to achieve. Now, Hebron has made BOA SA finals for the last 4 years and went to 5A state in its first year as a 5A school. They're definitely beginning to make a name for themselves. I laughed to myself in another thread when somebody stated a band had a "Hebron move" in their show. That was pretty cool. Quote
itsstephenyo Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 By the way, that's me that posted as the Guest... I didn't know we could post as guests now. Whoops. Quote
thesaxchica Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Exactly. Isn't it great? Nobody even knows about us yet. They can wait and see . Quote
takigan Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Clear Brook, Vista Ridge, Akins, Connally, Berkner, Mansfield (and their sister schools).....there's plenty more but those are the ones that immediately come to mind. Quote
crazyjakeup Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 berkner is sliding more than falling... for the last couple of state contest they made finals... im not too sure that people are posting bands on the rise or bands that have been great but not great enough to become an "elite" band... for me a band that is on the rise (even though they are the best in the state already) is marcus... They didn't make finals in 04 and they did this past year. And they also have a new band director who I've heard nothing but great things about. So explain the part about the current state champion being on the rise? Quote
Dynasty Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 Berkner does have an amazing director, Frank Troyka. I have had the honor of meeting him once, and I know some of the other TxB Staff members know him too. Given his success at CyFalls, I can't wait to see what he can do at Berkner. Just some food for thought, Rising bands can depend on many things. Much of it depends on the strength of the incoming class as well as the senior class. Then you have to consider the drill design, music selection, and performance venues. And there are countless more variables. Marching band is different from sports. Sports is riddled with statistics out the wazoo, to the degree that teams can be ranked or predicted even before a season starts. Marching band relies on too many unknowns. But then again, isnt that what makes each new season exciting? Quote

Marcus has really only been a serious contender for about the past 3 years or so. With the big jumps in progress they have made in recent years, they are still on the rise in that the program is cementing itself as one of the best in Texas. Winning a state championship draws massive attention to a program, which means more interest in the program by students, parents and the community. Another very important part of success at the high school level is strength in the feeder schools, and what percentage of those kids continue doing band in high school, which is something Marcus definately has. ClarinetGlissandoInBlue Posted October 9, 2007 Posted October 9, 2007 clear brook has always been a huge band in this most recent time imo. same for berkner. hopefully Pasadena Memorial has been gaining some credibility over the past few years. Quote
borchnork Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I'll hafta agree about Creekview and Hebron coming up. 4A: Sherman, Aledo, Centennial, Southwest and The Colony are very good, and if they keep pushing they'll be up there. Especially now that Sherman just beat out the 4A 2005 State Champs, and Centennial and Southwest placed 2nd and 3rd respectively at honor band. Quote

But yea my props to hebron for the Soulja Boi!! lol Quote
radchad Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I don't know. If a band has had ONE good year, can it neccesarily be seen as a "RISING" band? Just wondering. Anyway. From what I have seen so far this year, I would have to say Conally, Akins, and Mansfield. Quote
MartinHorn Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I have to say I think Martin is one of the rising bands in Texas. It makes me wonder where they'll be in a few years. Quote
rsb3 Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 In 3A, I'm going to go with Hidalgo. They had an amazing program before Canton dominated the SMC, legendary actually. They're finally starting to emerge as a powerhouse 3A. In 4A, S.H. Rider High School has a new director in his 2nd year at the school. He's completely revamped the program, giving them a much more modern technique and show design in general. In 2 or so years, I'm sure they're going to be fighting for area final spots. Quote

selby Posted October 10, 2007 Posted October 10, 2007 I agree with most of these bands being listed here, specifically about Hebron, they really stormed into 5A last year. Quote

bonepit06-07 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 dont count berkner out TROYKA IS A KNOWN GENIUS!!!!!!! hes helped the Connally and Hendrickson leadership teams at our leadership retreat and everything that comes out of his mouth is absolutely genius!!!!! every word he says is great Quote
Fata1 Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 As far as 4A goes, I think Centennial and Southwest are improving the fastest. Quote
