As much as I hate to admit it, I think you're right.

If we [Connally] can have another performance like we did at Hays USSBA yesterday, then I think we'll be fine.

Otherwise...not so sure.

BUT.

I really don't think that I'd put Hendrickson up there as first choice.

I think that Dripping Springs is waaaaaaayyyy better.

Hmph.

I wish that our band would step up.

All I can say about Area B is that the contest in two weeks is gonna be crazy. Every time you think you have a list right, some other band comes out of nowhere to challenge. We (McKinney Boyd) are just trying to fit into the mix of centennial, sherman, etc...

Connally took a BIG senior hit. It's also about what effort (both on the field and in your heart) EVERYONE'S willing to put into it...How bad do you want it?

I posted this somewhere else, but it is exactly what this thread is askin for.

Area B:

1) Sherman

2-3) Aledo/The Colony (no particular order)

4-5) Birdville/Centennial (no particular order)

6-7) Seguin/Boyd

At this point, I would expect Area C to look something like:

1. Poteet

2. Waxahachie

3. Highland Park

4. J. J. Pearce

5. Midlothian

Overall, it's a much weaker group than I originally thought it would be. Out of the three or four who advance, I would really only expect to see Poteet in state finals. That's pretty out of the norm for this area.

Conversely, any band who makes it out of B and D has an excellent shot at finals. Those are defintely shaping up to be the two strongest areas.

I agree w/ David about Waxahachie. I was really stunned to beat them. Not that we were bad, but that they were just SO good and spot on.

I think that we can do well at Area B now with all the edits we made to our show this weekend. Now we have a "drum break" (all we did was just removed the winds from their parts for about 4-5 sets and just kept the percussion playing, the audience bought it though and thought it was a real drum break) and during this break we're actually adding visuals! SCORE! and if we can get the 2nd mvmt. sounding like it did during warm-up I'm sure that our music scores will sky rocket.

Not with that attitude you won't. Why aren't you and your band being more positive?

I think it's really disheartening to see members from a band as great as Connally give up halfway through the season. You should take it as a challenge and prove all the naysayers wrong!

Okay I'm done preaching now.

...

i can't believe you.

i mean...even i know that our drive is lacking right now, i think that westlake was the wake-up call we needed.

especially for the upper classmen, we know how it feels to make it, and we know that it feels good.

taking last place is no fun.

even the fish know that much.

but honestly?

when you say that we're not going to make it, we won't.

not because we can't.

but because in our minds we've already lost.

wow...

long post, yikes!

ANYWAY.

I definately expect to see Waxahacie and Poteet at state along with Friendswood. :]

As much as I hate to admit it, I would agree with you on the rankings. The one surprise up there is Highland Park. Nothing against them, I just didn't really expect them to be up that high in our area.

It's kinda killing me right now that our band came in expecting to do well at these past two contests but then only two bands from our area don't beat us (Greenville and West Mesquite)...if this keeps up my senior high school marching season is gonna be my worst one yet...

I cannot deny that we had a very poor weekend, especially when put up to connally's past. We were very shaken on the bus ride home that we had only gotten tenth in westlake finals and were beated by dripping springs. We had not heard about our USSBA Hays results until today, and alot of ppl still dont know them, but they will come at a complete and utter suprise to our band. Just to let you guys know what really happened yesturday from a preformers perspective. We had a really bad run during westlake prelims, and were ready to make hays a great run in order to redeem ourselves. When we arrived at Hays our warm-up time had already started so we were cut short of the long. usual warm-up, but that wasnt too big of a deal because we had just preformed about two hours earlier. When we got on that field, we really felt it and put it all out there, and had one of our best preformances of the year. Now just to bring something to everyone's attention we preformed about 2-3 hours before the second band of our clas went, and i really think that had a serious effect on our scores, but we wont let that be an exuse becuase we should have been so outstanding that the judge should have had no doubt that we were first. When we got back to Westlake, we only had time to make it behind their scoreboard before the finalist bands were named, and when we heard we were in finals we were extatic, because we thought we had no hope. Then we heard we had to preform first, and that really brought spirits down, becuase some of the bigger band nerds in our band said we were screwed and had no chance of getting higher than tenth. Well most of the band bought into that, and then when you added how exausted we were from our two previous preformances, and being on our feet all day, we werent in a good state to preform. We then went onto the field, and went through the motions of preformance, but didnt think about what we were doing. Our flute soloist had issues with the speaker/mic in her first solo so it came off as silence and some playing, and i think that flipped some freshman out and thats where it pretty much fell apart that run. Our flute soloist was in tears becuase of the mic/speaker issude (not sure which one) so i was busy consoling her, but when i finally got around the band, i heard them talking, and they knew we were going to end tenth. I believe that going to two contest days was a good plan, but our band this year was not up for the daunting task. I really disagree with Bonepit's statement of us being out of state contention. The flute section leader (the soloist) and I came together and realized something needs to change, so we called an emergency leadership team meeting and we are going to "start over" and do things right from now on. WE were beaten but our scores were not far off from first, and I feel that if start working really hard now, we will make state. Sorry for the long post, but i just felt like letting the band world know what is really going on with Connally, we may be down, but we arent out!

Have you even seen Hendrickson's show from the front in it's entirety? I don't think you should be making statements like " I think that Dripping Springs is waaaaaaayyyy better." I mean you are entitled to your own opinion (though i'm sure most would rather it be an educated one), but don't bash other bands in the process of voicing it... That's all...

hmmmm, well Area D seems to be a mess to me this year. Central Texas is one of the fastest growing areas in the country so I guess it makes sense that bands in the area are becoming so great. I think the area was already tough enough without the addition of New Braunfels and Steele.

But the way I see it now is Hendrickson obviously at the top, who I think has a shot at winning it all based on there results so far. Have yet to see their show from the front, but have heard great things.

I think Dripping Springs may be the other lock, but I thought the same thing 2 years ago. But have seen their show twice now and as always they are very clean, just hope they don't top out too soon.

3rd (and possibly 4th if the addition of another region allows for it) are pretty much up for grabs in my opinion. New Braunfels, NB Canyon and Steele all had a good showing this weekend and will be in contention. I don't think you can ever count out Connally. Maybe they're not the usual dominant Connally of old, but I still liked their show and can see great things coming from it.

Other possible finalist bands include Lake Travis and Vista Ridge (sorry for the biased opinion  ...)

Just my opinion

Haha, Foster, getting a bit worked up, aren't we?

Though, I do agree. Have you gotten to watch our full show? Not even from the very front, per se...but at all?

If not, then is it really your place to say that they're "waaaaaaayyyy better" than us?

Just wondering.

It's the same reason why I've not posted rankings for our Area...because, with the limited viewing of other shows that I've gotten, I can't really say. :] As of now, with a general "I'm in this band" bias, my rankings would look something like this:

1) Hendrickson

2-3 and Alternate) Any other band in our area, in no particular order

...Yeah.

On another note, I agree with most of the comments above about Connally. I really hope everything settles out for you guys, because you guys are a great program, and I've really enjoyed what I've seen of your show this year. I'm definitely looking forward to competing against you at Area and, if we make it, I'd want to compete with you guys at State, too.

So, best of luck with finding your footing once again!

I have come back to give out my absolute apologies to the Cougar Band world (Directors,Boosters, administrators and our suppporters) my comments were uncalled for.

Sherman: Unknown... but to beat Poteet they must have SOMETHING going on there!

Aledo: VERY GE oriented. Marching is executed EXTREMELY well. Music is a little lacking.

Colony: Unknown, but they beat Aledo at the first competition...

Centennial: Pretty good right now. The show is made to highly appeal to UIL judges and scoring. I think now that we're fixing our musicianship on the field and modifying a lot of the show (AND PUTTING THE CLOSER OUT FINALLY!!!) it'll be very excellent.

Birdville: Honestly, I haven't seen them in three weeks so any comments I have would be pointless. They had a lot of drill issues when I saw them, and (like I've said before) I think playing Percy Grainger music for their show is highly highly risky. But it's been three weeks, so I'm sure all the little things are worked out.

Interesting note from the Plano East recaps: Boyd beat Sherman in music performance in finals. That's pretty hard core. So as of right now, I would predict Area B to look like:

1. Sherman

2. The Colony

3. Aledo

4. Boyd

Alternate: Birdville/Centennial
