Interesting note from the Plano East recaps: Boyd beat Sherman in music performance in finals. That's pretty hard core. So as of right now, I would predict Area B to look like:

1. Sherman

2. The Colony

3. Aledo

4. Boyd

Alternate: Birdville/Centennial

I don't feel like Boyd has quite what it takes yet. I favor North out of all the Mckinney schools. Plus, Southwest has a very high chance as well. Remember that out of Area B Centennial and Southwest were the ones who placed highest in Honor Band recordings, so I think when it comes to music scores, those two will be on top.

Why North? They are at their smallest membership size ever after taking a huge hit from Boyd. They also failed to make finals at TOC and Plano East (where Boyd did make finals.) That seems a bit counterintuitive to me. I feel that if Boyd has proven they can compete with Sherman, they have a pretty darn good shot at state. This is especially true after Birdville and Southwest did not do as well as expected at the Aledo comp. It is true that this is Boyd's first year as a varsity band, but let's not forget that Poteet, Birdville, and Hendrickson (if I'm not mistaken) all advanced to state in their first year with seniors.

well said, although it appears as though you are the only one who believes those words...(being a member of the Boyd Band I can appreciate that statement)

Actually, Mike, I do believe Boyd is shaping up to be the best in their town. Do you remember seeing North last week? They were SMALL! While size is not the only determining factor, you can tell that the chunk taken out of them has affected their ability to deliver. Boyd is definitely a band to consider. However, I have also seen Boyd, and marching fundamentals is definitely something they can improve upon. The scores from East competition says that as well as both Marching judges gave 10th as well as the GE judge, which is partially affected by marching. Also, while I do agree that Boyd has a great sound, only one Judge placed them higher than Sherman, while the other didn't.

Anyways... still, Boyd definitely makes EVERY band's run for state at area B even tougher.

seriously. its gonna be a bloodbath. i mean, sherman, the colony, aledo, centennial, southwest, boyd, seguin...and only 3-4 spots to fill

Maybe five spots if a miracle happens.

lol that doesn't make me feel better... 8 bands for what we hope is 4 spots... i say we just put them on the field two at a time and let them duke it out.

oh cool, boyd over here, lol congrats on the football win over North...

So we've gone from competing with poteet, sherman, wylie, hebron, mckinney (when I was there and we were good in 05) to this crap...what luck

Concerning Birdville, they did not march as well as I expected on Saturday at our (Aledo's) contest. Their show lacked intensity (it is based off of percy grainger), which may be a for them problem at area. I am sure they will pull it together, but who knows... the fourth and fifth spot are very wide open.

The Colony has a great show, featuring a crazy blend of adagio for strings and more lively, up tempo tunes. They are a VERY solid band, definitely a band to be feared come area.

Southwest has a classical show based on music by shostokovich. It was a powerful on field musical performance, though it seemed very lacking in GE and drill design. If marching is cleaned, they will be a great power at area.

Juan Seguin show (my favorite 4A show so far) is based off the "pandemonium circus". It has an outstanding GE in my opinion, for the sense of chaos continues throughout, changes in musical feeling happening without warning. They are MUCH better than they were two years ago, and band is also much larger. If they can clean it up, they will be AWESOME...

Centennial has already been spoken for, and I know little at all about Boyd and Sherman (who of course is the area B favorite)

True. I probably should have posted the overall music and visual performance rankings after the weights were applied, which came out to:

Music:

1. Keller

2. Wylie

3. Poteet

4. Rowlett

5. Richardson

6. Flower Mound

7. McKinney Boyd

8. Allen

9. Sherman

10. Mesquite

Visual:

1. Wylie

2. Poteet

3. Keller

4. Rowlett

5. Richardson

6. Sherman

7. Allen

8. Flower Mound

9. Mesquite

10. McKinney Boyd

So the visual score clearly sealed the deal for Sherman. Anyway, the point is Area B is crazy. I'm already rethinking my earlier prediction because I just can't see Birdville coming in lower than fourth. One always has to consider program and director reputation, ESPECIALLY at the area level. Birdville will probably come away with a first place vote or two which could launch them into the top regardless of the other rankings.
