while i dont disagree that birdville is pretty darn good, i do disagree that they will come away with mre than 1 first, if even 1. this is not because they arent good. they are. its because i think sherman will take almost all the firsts. and if they dont, theres a bunch of other bands that could take the musical rankings

You never know. Take a look at the Area C finals results from last year:

http://www.uilregion3music.net/Area%20C%20...ults%202006.pdf

After a weak (for Berkner anyway) performance, Berkner came away with two firsts while the other three judges had them below 4th (the cutoff point for state.) In a somewhat cluttered field, this is what ultimately launched them into the top 4. I could see a similar situation happening with Birdville.

Now of course Berkner totally cleaned up their act by DMI and state. They were almost a different band at those two competitions. I'm just saying that in a crowded field, reputation can sometimes be a deciding factor (even though it shouldn't be.)

Ugh, I should really go do homework now instead of talking about band. I am the WORST procrastinator and you guys are my enablers. Haha.

Concerning Birdville, they did not march as well as I expected on Saturday at our (Aledo's) contest. Their show lacked intensity (it is based off of percy grainger), which may be a for them problem at area. I am sure they will pull it together, but who knows... the fourth and fifth spot are very wide open.

Southwest has a classical show based on music by shostokovich. It was a powerful on field musical performance, though it seemed very lacking in GE and drill design. If marching is cleaned, they will be a great power at area.

Based on the results at Aledo, Birdville doesn't seem to be doing very good. They beat us but I honestly think we gain on them within these next two weeks. That is, if our band actually works as hard as we did today everyday. We're adding visuals tomorrow and we should have our final three sets for our show. Our ending was thrown together by the directors because our real ending wasn't finished. I don't know if we can pull everything off in time for Area. If we do, I think we have a shot. Right now, though, it's very iffy.

good luck to you guys with that. we are in a similar situation. we havnt performed our whole show at contest yet. our first time performing the fourth mvmt, which i might add is the hardest marching and drill ive had in my four years, will be this weekend. we should bump our scores up quite a bit with it

Good luck to you all also. I've felt so behind all the other bands since we haven't had our full show out yet. It's nice to know that other strong bands are in the same boat. Once we lay the last few pages of our closer, we should have our full show done.

as much as I love looking forward to dogfights, don't forget and blow off region, we don't want anyone to get caught with a two and possibly lower the number of bands going to state because of it...that would suck

That's true. The more bands that make a 1 this weekend means that more bands can go to state. I can't imagine what it would be like to have less than 20 bands make a first division. Only taking 3 bands from Area B seems like a rip-off considering the fact that the top 8 or so bands from Area B could take a lot of the top places at State.

Have you even seen Hendrickson's show from the front in it's entirety? I don't think you should be making statements like " I think that Dripping Springs is waaaaaaayyyy better." I mean you are entitled to your own opinion (though i'm sure most would rather it be an educated one), but don't bash other bands in the process of voicing it... That's all...

Hm, sorry.

I didn't mean for it to come off sounding so bad.

I wasn't trying to 'bash' HHS.

Seriously, I have lots of friends who go there and I am not trying to say that the band is bad in any way.

It is my opinion, however.

And in my opinion, I feel that Dripping Springs is lightyears ahead of any other band in Area D.

Sorry if I caused any ruffled feathers.

I really wasn't trying to come off sounding like a jerk.

as a parent of a Hendrickson student, I just wanted to say that it is flattering to be listed as the first choice by some members of this forum. However, we may have difficulty getting to area. On early Sunday morning, while returning from Conroe and the Lone Star Preview, one of our buses was struck by a car. Fortunately no one was seriously injured (in the band), but we lost a lot of instruments. Two of our students were taken immediately by EMS to the hospital, and 6 others have since been treated for minor injuries. Several other band programs, including Connally, Westwood, and Elgin, have come to our assistance to offer help with loaned instruments. On behalf of our program, I want to thank all of those schools. Always remember, though we compete, band is indeed a community. We greatly appreciate all the support from so many people.

That's definitely not good. How are the two students that were taken by EMS doing?

Yeah Area B is going to be full of great bands. Being a member of the Sherman High School Marching Band I am upset that our long time rival Poteet won't be there. I guess we'll have to wait and face them at State! Anyway today our band director told us that he already reserved our hotel for San Antonio. I'll have to admit that Plano East was not Sherman's Best Performance. We are really working hard especially on our music, which Boyd beat us at <_< . Anyway Region is tomarrow good luck to everyone participating! :D

neither is serious, thankfully, and both were dismissed after a few hours in the ER. both are suffering what is basically whiplash, but both performed last night at UIL Region here in Austin. We got a 1, which allows us to advance to Area. MANY THANKS to Westwood HS, Connally HS, Elgin HS and Pflugerville Kelly Lane Middle School for instruments that they loaned us that allowed us to compete at Region.

I know! I can't get over Poteet and Sherman not being in the same region/area anymore! Poteet and Sherman were at every single contest together my senior year. I pretty much had Sherman's show memorized after seeing it a good half dozen times. I think the only time I missed it was at Plano East when we performed after Sherman in prelims and finals.

Anyway, this new arrangement is absolutely bizarre. It kind of breaks up one of the funnest 4A rivalries.

I agree. It's not fun. =[

I think the fourth mvmt for us is now to a level where it's acceptable for performance. It's not quite at the level that would be shocking yet, but I think by area it'll be there.

I agree too. It makes it impossible for some bands that could probably make finals at state to even get the chance because getting out of area is harder.

Hmm... an NCAA-ish kinda deal? Computers and polls... fun!!!

YES!

and that way all the really good bands from the extremely hard areas that don't make state can perform.

sometimes I wish we just didn't have area levels... because in some cases, the alternate in one area could easily beat the first place band in another area... that's not fair to everybody.
