mbui Posted October 17, 2007 Author Posted October 17, 2007 Some fabulous stuff went on at Region 17..... Dickinson Dickinson performed the music of Respighi's 'Feste Romane' and 'Church Windows.' There were issues with individual trumpet players sticking out and not in tune. But overall, the band had a strong performance. They should be advancing out of Area F once again. Just clean up the music issues and you guys will be fine at State.. Friendswood Friendswood had a gorgeous ensemble sound...one of the best I've heard all season. I saw the band a couple of weeks ago at BOA and the band tonight when compared to the one at BOA was like night and day. The music execution was there. The band didn't perform the entire show tonight. They stopped right after the ballad. Looking forward to see the show in its entirety. From what I saw tonight, the show is worthy of a Finalist spot at State. Clear Brook It felt like the band was holding back on their sound tonight. I didn't get the same volume tonight like I did in Prelims at the BOA Houston. But overall, it was a strong performance in other areas. I love the percussion section and the color guard, as well as the bass effect coming from the synth. Outstanding soloists! Clear Brook's on-field warm up 'Adagio for Strings' gave me the first goosebumps of the day. Looking forward to seeing the band again at the BOA San Antonio Super Regional and BOA Grand Nationals in Indianapolis. Brazoswood There have been few times where I've teared up during a marching show but I did just that when Brazoswood took the field. The opening intro from "The Passion" and Eric Whitacre's "Water Night" did it for me. I was literally shaking because of how emotional the music was. The band had an astonishing sound---tone quality, balance, and clarity were all there. You could tell that Brazoswood had an "on" performance. I felt the energy in the stands. Can't wait to see the full BOA version of the program at the Super Regional in San Antonio. It's an all around great show. The design, the execution, and the effects are all there. Tx_Band_Marcher08 Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 There is much more to come with Dickinson's perfomance. As for Friendswood I think it was a good sound as a whole but as for the show itself, my band didn't care for it as much as our show which is probably because the tempo's weren't as exciting as ours but it was an awesome job. As for Santa Fe, I think it was a good show but the one thing that will hold them back from going to state possibly is maybe their way too many visuals. I think they walk around more than marching. In my opinion Area for area F will be a good contest with lots of competition. Quote
ClarinetGlissandoInBlue Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Pasadena Memorial High School, Maverick Band received straight 1's this afternoon. Quote
oDesign Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 Langham recieved straight 1's also. Best run we've had, by far. Everyone finally stepped up today and really delivered. Now we just need to get the last 30 seconds of the show on the field... Quote
ClarinetGlissandoInBlue Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 that's good, i expect no less from you guys. on our run, I was kinda dreading a 1-2-2. we had one rub at the beginning because of the pit, and then there were numerous spacing issues that were non-existent before this afternoon. we'll be adding back the first 6 sets and subsets for SHSU. But hey; I got to see some show bands today (Yea, no twirler/ground humping!), and it really makes you appreciate having community/administrative support for musical bands. It really says something about the state of affairs within the Dallas ISD Fine Arts office when they fired a director that got Skyline (a typical division 3/4 band) a division 2 rating by playing with actual decent sounds just because he converted them to a corps-style band. I actually don't mind show band styles so long as they are done well and aren't offensively lewd. Thankfully, everything today was pretty clean (except for the one set of twirlers that did a couple of stripper moves) but the directors really do their students a disservice by teaching them that just blasting is the right way to play the horn so long as they got the beat. ETA: Oh, and congrats on being in one of the only 4 5A bands to get a I. Quote
the terminator Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Yeah have the amazing and then the Dallas schools, so what makes it that they get such a low rating Quote
sax5warrior Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Oh I appreciate it very much Daniel, I was quite disappointed on getting one 2, I was holding my head down the whole time. It is really disappointing to see bands like that on the field, they are entertaining but all that entertainment goes away when you hear all the blasting and the horrible sounds. I'll leave it at that, I don't want to get in trouble. Another year has went and gone, I have overcame so much in the last few years, it really makes me appreciate the things I have that other people don't have to worry about. You really need to see these bands to understand. Their numbers are ridiculously low (5A Sunset had 24 kids on the field) due to the lack of respect for them amongst their student body and community, but the Dallas ISD Fine Arts heads just don't get it. the terminator Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 I really appreciate to be in a band program that actually cares and go for the straight 1's, but what is a show like Quote

This is what the Dallas bands try to be like, but with 30-50 kids on the field (for 5A schools!), awful blasty sounds, and not nearly so well choreographed. It is such a shame that good kids have to put up with directors and ISD staff that refuse to actually teach their students how to actually play their horns. Quote

sax5warrior Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 If youre interested Terminator, you may search for any DISD school on youtube and you may find some of their videos on there. I believe they already had their DISD/FWISD battle of the bands...I think. . Xenon said: This is Grambling which is widely considered to be The Best show band in the world.
