mbui Posted October 21, 2007 Author Posted October 21, 2007 Houston area folks should know what I'm talking about but..... A show band that I always enjoy watching is Willowridge HS from Houston (Fort Bend ISD). They're a world renowned show band and even performed in exhibition at the BOA Houston Regional in 2005. Great group! Quote

I believe they already had their DISD/FWISD battle of the bands...I think.. Here is Dallas Carter (one of the "better" Dallas show bands) from last year. Their numbers are down to slightly more than half that many this year. Quote

trumpetman1288 Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 I was at the region 15 UIL, and here are some thoughts... 4A: Roma was CLEARLY the dominant one as far as 4A goes. They played the Planets, and they played it well. Despite this, I think their drill is a WEEEEE bit difficult and it showed in the performance. If they hope to go to state (which I am sure they probably will), they REALLY need to clean it up. The music performance was a little unbalanced from time to time, but that isn't anything that can't be fixed in a rehearsal or two... I was quite surprised Mission Vets got a 2. Drill was clean, but music was a little weak. Still, it was played well, and I thought it was worthy of a 1. 5A: I'm really proud of my old high school, Sharyland, for being where they are at right now. They have made big strides since BOA Houston, and I only hope it continues that way until BOA San Antonio. They are young group right now, but they did not sound like one last night. They are maturing rather fast, which is always a good thing. I would say the visual part of the performance (individual and ensemble) was a little weak, but just as it has since Houston, it will also continue to get better (I hope). Out of everyone last night, I would say it's a coin flip between Sharyland and Roma for hardest drill. Both schools have A LOT going on... My favorite of the night was Rio Grande City. These guys have come a LONG way in recent years. They have always had killer concert bands, but most people would probably have never guessed it based on the marching band. The band has developed a WICKED sound on the field and has really gotten better at marching as well. Their only weakness in all this development is that they have yet to march a show that seems difficult. I think if they field a harder show next year and actually pull it off, they will be on their way to the dome next year. My hats off to Rio for continuing to improve, and I hope to see them at SA next year. Edinburg was another outstanding group at UIL. They played Moon Dance, Jupiter, and I cannot remember the last one. They actually had a guy singing Moon Dance, and I tip my hat to him; he did a great job. They played Jupiter BEAUTIFULLY too...one of the best arrangements of it on the field that I have heard (yes...it MAY even rival Cedar Park's 2004 arrangement, but that is subject to opinion). Quote

They had a strong performance at UIL Region. One of my favorite parts in the show was when there was a door slam sound effect and then you see all of the door props shutting automatically. It was pretty creepy. They utilized "The Shining" theme very well. Overall, Cy Falls has great show both musically and visually. This is my favorite show from the band since 2004's "Same Difference." They will be in the running for a Finalist spot at the BOA Super Regional. Quote
