Indeed I think you are correct. As we get closer and closer to Tuesday, I'm starting to think we'll be seeing all 4 Area D bands in finals...

I beleive you are correct in saying that we'll be seeing all 4 Area D bands in finals. Even though Drip had a good show at Centenial beating Area B bands, Area B will be sending many bands into finals. Drip doesn't have the hardest music and drill althought performed at a very high level. Points are added to bands with hard drill executed well rather than bands with easy drill executed well.

I think the point was though that despite the simplicity of Dripping Springs music, it was executed SO perfectly that the points from the difficulty of the area B band's shows didn't really make up the difference.

Um, i cant acess my account so i'm using my mom's... but does our show (dripping springs) really look that easy? Because it sure isnt easy to perform and, after almost 4 seasons of marching band under my belt, it's the hardest we've ever attempted. I'll admit that when we play the third movement, Huckleberry Finn, our drill turns relatively easy..but hey, it's the "fun" part of the show and we'd like to make it as pleasing to the eye of the audience as possible. I'm always gasping for breath within the first two minutes of the show and i've never really had to do that before so if we really make the drill and the music look easy, then we must be doing a great job! ;)

We definitely enjoyed competeing and watching some of the bands up in Area B and i'll agree that you all have some great bands that i look forward to seeing this tuesday. I still wish i got to see Sherman perform so hopefully i'll get my eye's and ear's worth at state. Good luck to you all!

I'll hafta 2nd that I didn't see the drill being anywhere near as hard as some of our Area B bands (mainly Aledo).

But like I said before, you performed what you had with such a perfection and attention to detail, that it didn't really matter. Everything you marched was crystal clear to the eye and the music was very clean.

Question though... Is there a particular reason you don't march trombones?

Posted

yeah, there are a couple.. i play trombone myself.

For one thing, we only have 3 actual baritone players right now, so it'd look kinda weird to have 9 trombones and 3 baritones..but that's probably just my opinion. Also there's a reason drum corps dont march trombones...it's easier to make a group of marching baritones look clean, especially when traversing. We started marching all baritones my freshman year (3 years ago) and i like it, or i guess the idea of it, better than marching trombone. Bowie High School does the same thing. It's a growing fad...haha

I see your point.

We have about 12 or 13 trombones and only 3 Baritones marching. (correct me if you from Centennial and I was way wrong on that) There are times when it looks rather awkward.

And UIL isn't as influenced by "General Effect", as opposed to the CMF.

I am very curious to see whether Dripping Springs will finish above all of the Area B bands at state.

GE is only ten percent. Fifty percent is music. Thirty percent is marching. I think you're overestimating the influence of GE at this competition.

I understand that the GE score was only 10%

I guess what I should have said is that its alot different than the UIL judging.

Because UIL had the 4As placed at

1.Sherman

2.Aledo

3.The Colony

and CMF had us placed at

1.The Colony

2.Aledo

3.Sherman

I am sure all 3 bands made great improvements over a week

But the only thing I believe the Colony does better than Sherman and Aledo is their GE. They have a very "neat" show.

So I logically assumed that The Colony did well at CMF because of GE.

Posted

Yes, but I doubt GE was enough on its own to justify the gap between 3rd and 6th/7th if it's worth only 10% of the score. The Colony must have also had strong music/visual scores. A lot can change in a week.

It looks like everyone's predictions are very close.

I guess it truly is hard to say who will definitely get up to the top.

Dripping Springs, I am too curious about them.

At Cap City they got 3rd in 3A...I believe I am correct. Correct me if I'm wrong.

They managed to pull a caption over all the 4a bands (including Round Rock, McNeil, Westwood, Georgetown, Akins...etc)

Well I guess we will see on Tuesday whether The Colony really improved that much in a week, or we will see the huge fallacies of the CMF judging.

I personally didn't think their show was very clean

Did anyone else notice they have two endings to their show.

Their finals finale was completely different from their prelims

I think the difficulty of playing two different "themes" at the same time is what boosts the Colony's music scores and if our directors had any influence on judging style, its the musicality that will be the decider.

maybe...

maybe not...

but most likely.

lol. ;)

How exactly did they do that?

And how exactly is that difficult?

Posted (edited)

I dunno if its difficult. Just a guess. Im not sure what the songs are called but the arrangement included a mash of one song with another song and I believe the difficulty of it is that it might have been difficult to keep track of one "song" while the other was going. Like I said, just a guess.

I don't think thats very difficult, as long as you have a good arranger. And their band director, Mr. Filowoski(sp?) is very good at arranging music.

So good, that he arranges Sherman's music...
