Xenon Posted November 10, 2007 Author Posted November 10, 2007 silentwatch said: I like the idea of throwing off 1-2 scores. I think, like in figure skating (which I mentioned before), it would be a more accurate evaluation of any band. However, to throw off one score out of 7 judges would create possible multiple ties. I'm assuming you're saying you throw out the score most off in each Music and Marching (thus ending up with 5 rankings counted out of 7). So, supposing someone got 5, 5, 4, 6 in Music and 5, 4, 6 in marching...how would you "throw off" a score from that? Yes, one would be thrown out from each caption. In both captions in your example, 4 and 6 are equally "off" (these will always be the highest and lowest) and so both are thrown out and replaced by a single 5 which is exactly half way between them, thus giving 5,5,5 and 5,5 for a total of 25 rank points. The general method (the above is an exception case) for choosing which score to throw out is as follows and can easily be done automatically in a spreadsheet: JudgeX Distance from JudgeY = The absolute value of the difference in scores/ranks given by judges X and Y. JudgeX Total Distance = Sum JudgeX's Distances from the other judges. The Judge with the highest Total Distance is thrown out. Exception: If there is a tie for the highest Total Distance, the highest and lowest scores shall be averaged. Example1: Assume the following ranks: JudgeA = 3 JudgeB = 6 JudgeC = 7 JudgeD = 8 JudgeA Total Distance = abs(3 - 6) + abs(3 - 7) + abs(3 - 8) = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 JudgeB Total Distance = abs(6 - 3) + abs(6 - 7) + abs(6 - 8) = 3 + 1 + 2 = 6 JudgeC Total Distance = abs(7 - 3) + abs(7 - 6) + abs(7 - 8) = 4 + 1 + 1 = 6 JudgeD Total Distance = abs(8 - 3) + abs(8 - 6) + abs(8 - 7) = 5 + 2 + 1 = 8 JudgeA has the largest distance of 12, and so is thrown out. Example2 (Extreme Tie): JudgeA = 2 JudgeB = 2 JudgeC = 8 JudgeD = 8 JudgeA Total Distance = abs(2 - 2) + abs(2 - 8) + abs(2 - 8) = 0 + 6 + 6 = 12 JudgeB Total Distance = abs(2 - 2) + abs(2 - 8) + abs(2 - 8) = 0 + 6 + 6 = 12 JudgeC Total Distance = abs(8 - 2) + abs(8 - 2) + abs(8 - 8) = 6 + 6 + 0 = 12 JudgeD Total Distance = abs(8 - 2) + abs(8 - 2) + abs(8 - 8) = 6 + 6 + 0 = 12 There is a tie for Highest Distance, therefore JudgeA (or is averaged with JudgeC (or D) to give resulting scores of 2, 5, 8 = 15 which is the same as if each judge had met half way to begin with at 5, 5, 5, 5. borchnork Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 I really like band for quite a few reasons, like the music, the friends etc. and also the fact that there is no math involved in it. Quote
Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) i seriously disagree with Hendricksons placement. they were amazing and there music is much more challenging than connally's. they also marched a higher level of difficulty in there drill than connally Edited November 10, 2007 by Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Quote

I agree that Hendrickson had a more difficult show than Connally, but Connally was on fire during finals and performed their show with the utmost precision and emotion while many of the other bands that evening had issues that they didn't have in prelims. Difficulty doesn't always deserve to be placed above perfection and perfection doesn't always deserve to be placed above difficulty. Both must be weighed together, and with their Finals performance, I feel that Connally deserved the placement they got. Quote
Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) i didnt get to see connally's performance in finals but i was in the tunnel for most of hendricksons. We also competed against connally all year and there is nothing about there show that was better than hendrickson. i understand that perfection out ways difficulty. but its not that hard to perfect london bridge is falling down. if im not mistaken we all learned that in 6th grade if not earlier. i dont agree with dumbing down your show just so you can get it clean enough to do well in state. take a chance. do something challenging. and as far as the issues go i know what you mean. our finals performance sounded tired to me. Connally may have seemed to have an easier show, but it comes down to who executes the best in the end, not who has the most difficulty. I liked DS show the best, not because I'm biased either, but I don't think DS executed the best performance in finals. Let's show some class and congratulate Connally for a job well done. They represented Area D awesomely and I'm proud of them. No need to knock them. The judges liked them and thought they did well. The rest of us can just be proud we placed where we did because we started out as one of 230 bands and ended up in top 24. Let's all congratulate each other, not beat each other up. And yeah, DS finals performance WAS tired. That's what happens when half the band decides it'd be more fun to run around screaming than sit and rest up for finals. Quote
Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) ya props to connally for making it im just saying in my opinion that hendrickson did better. thats all im not bashing connally. there and amazing band. and they are a great representative of area d Edited November 10, 2007 by Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Quote

I've seen numerous posts agreeing that they were on fire at finals in comparison to prelims and there are at least 8 bands in finals that did worse in finals than in prelims. Quote
Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 but i did see them all year. like i said there and amazing band and im not bashing them. i just think hendrickson deserved a higher placement Quote

I watched from the 3rd story on the 50.. it was amazing.. The forms were clean, THe music was loud yet balanced. It was their best show yet. been screwed for years? they've been great since ive been in high school. two years ago they were in state finals as well they havent been screwed for years. just the way there show is made its designed to do well in the UIL judging format. thats why they dont always do great at other contests. probably why we beat them at westlake. Dr1pp1ng Spr1ngs Posted November 10, 2007 Posted November 10, 2007 (edited) ya true that. i had some ppl tell me that poteet shouldnt of been first that connally did play better than them. but with poteet there just so big. man everyone should come down to Dripping Springs and Dickinson size. see whats up.
