In 2006, they took five from Area B. It all depends on how many bands from the Region Contests make a Division I rating and advance to Area.

area b is probably the hardest area in the state of texas.

In both 4A and 5A. I think I'll plan to go to the Area B finals next year. It'll be one stacked competition.

and area D is stacked up also i mean look who you have

Cedar Park

Georgetown

Round Rock

Leander

i dont think you can automatically assume that certain areas are completely better then others

Just because I said Area B is hard doesn't mean I'm trying to take away from the fact that Area D has some of the greatest bands in the state also. I was just pointing out Area B since we were on the subject of Area B earlier in the topic. I wasn't trying to raise Area B above all others.

i have to agree area D looks pretty tough...wonder how reagan will do..

and looking back to last year's results from state...Austin HS was 24th...is that the same SFA band that got 8th at GN this year?

and the other area has SFA, langham creek, cy falls

dont forget Clements.

and cy-woods did incredibly good this year, considering they have no seniors and their school was just opened a few years ago. It'll be interesting to see how they do.

But i still don't think this area is as hard as some of the others in Texas.

Right now though, our band director (at lchs) has been basically m.i.a. for a few weeks now, and noone knows if he's comming back, or why he's not allowed on school property right now.

If he doesnt return, next year will be a very interesting Area E contest.

I don't think we'll be able to sweep it like we usually do without him. :(

So he just up and disappeared out of no where? Sounds like my Communication Application teacher, she just stopped coming the school says she is "sick"...She has been gone for an extremely long amount of time and the substitute they replaced her with is rather annoying and he sounds like the guy from the Clear Eyes commercial...

Yeah, I'm in Area D, and it's tough. The areas changed just last year, so it was the first year for us to compete with Churchill, Reagan, etc. at UIL.

Last year though was insane. We were 4TH in prelims to go on to state, but our directors didn't tell us our exact placement before finals. We ended up dropping lowww in finals, down to 8th place, and not even being an Alternate.

We were devestated.

Our band has improved so much since last year though. Hopefully we'll have another chance next year.

Ya, we though he must be sick at first, until the head of the music department started comming to school, and people saw the principle searching his office.

We're told he's out for "personal issues" and they're CRAZY rumors flying around (which are just ridiculous and not even worth naming), but noone knows what it is for sure. Not even his son, our DM, will say.

But we don't get to have a sub, so its basically one director doing all four bands right now.

Its so crazy.

I don't think Area D is any harder than it used to be. I mean yeah, Reagan and Churchill are in the mix now but at least the Area D bands don't have to compete with Spring or the Woodlands anymore. It was an even trade-off for those 2 schools I think.

And Area D IS the most stacked area with B a close 2nd. 4 of the 5 Area D bands that competed made the finals at State last year (the one that didn't make it was Cedar Park; ...the Area D champions). B has a small handful of "juggernaut" schools and a large pool of "solid" schools. While Area D may not have any "juggernaut" schools (ex. L.D. Bell, Marcus, Duncanville) you could drag the ranking list down into the teens and you'd still be dealing with bands that could hold their own at the State contest.

As for who's going, it'll be the same story with 90% of the schools, just with a different ranking. The exciting part is always the upsets...underdogs who beat bands with a good reputation and bands that don't always get recognized finally getting the recognition they deserve (like Colleyville making finals at BOA for just 1 example). And of course, the incredible programs that slip up from time to time and don't do as good as you expect (Reagan not making National finals, Langham and Cy-Falls not making Super-Regional Finals, Cedar Park not making State finals)....it's saddening but it's exciting in that it's something you don't expect. Then you have the new schools, and the anticipation for how good they'll do against the establishment.

But otherwise, it's mostly the same story year after year.....

Nationals is always exciting too, because not the same bands go every year and it's interesting to see how those schools will do against the rest of the nation.

Everybody seems to be forgetting that Area C tends to have only a small number of slots (3 or sometimes 2) and in 2006, all 3 bands that advanced from Area C (Duncanville, Coppell, Berkner) made it to State Finals.

Posted (edited)

I believe 5A Area C advanced 4 last time around (Rowlett tied Brazoswood for 14th in prelims.) But you are right about people underestimating it. I don't think many were expecting Coppell or Berkner to be in the top 10 until they both put out fantastic performances in state prelims. And on the 4A front, J. J. Pearce just barely missed out on state finals after totally flying under the radar all season long. If Richardson High moves back down to 4A (as rumored) expect 4A Area C to have an even greater presence at State Marching Contest.

Oops, I forgot about Rowlett, one of my favorite shows from the Dallas area of that season.

The biggest problem with Area C is that the top-to-bottom depth just isn't there at all, but those at the top are big powerhouses. While Areas B and D have a LOT of depth in addition to their powerhouses such that many of the Area Finalists from those areas could have a shot at making state in some other areas.

Posted

I agree with you about the top-to-bottom disparity. The results from area finals last year attest to that. However, I can think of a few areas where Sachse, DeSoto, and Lake Highlands could advance. From what I saw this year, Sachse and Lake Highlands were both stronger than Rowlett. If things keep up this way next year, Area C will be much more interesting than it was in 2006.

Posted

hey now... you can make that case for lake highlands, but as for sachse; they havent a chance... sachse will lose a ton of seniors this year (way more than rowlett)... but i was very disapointed by the show that rowlett presented this year(minus the guard)...i think next year the bands from area C to make state will be: duncanville, rowlett, coppell, berkner(as always)
