sax5warrior Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 So uh.. I think my region is the very last one to audition this weekend. ANY TRUE tips on how to ease on the nerves. I heard not playing (or looking at) your region music 6 hours before your actual audition helps. Anybody who has been there already got any? Quote
SerialSleeper90 Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 THis isn't necassarily to get rid of pre-performance nerves, but it helps. When you are playing and you mess up, just completely forget that you messed up and keep going. Also you could always eat a banana. Quote
borchnork Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I wouldn't warm up to much or practice the music excessively that day, because it just makes you more apprehensive about the audition. Quote
ClarinetGlissandoInBlue Posted December 4, 2007 Author Posted December 4, 2007 since i do not compete against any of you guys... In your audition, play not for the judges or for the respect of the other players in the room. Play for yourself. Notes, rhythm, and technique are super-important, but remember to enjoy what you are doing, the playing of your respective instrument, it shows in the way you sound. This performance is an expression of yourself. I've never eaten a banana before auditions, but it should help. It's science! Beta blocker help calm your nerves. during the warm ups, don't do it. if you must, then play a little each time, but never go playing away all of your energy. you cannot even hear yourself play, so it's quite pointless. just be calm and try to relax (but not too much..haha) good night sleep helps. The first part again. Play for yourself. Sarah: Cody, Megan, and myself have known each other for 5 years of region now. We've usually always ended up right next to each other, in one order or another. Quote
borchnork Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Speaking of warm-up time in the room. I was sitting outside the french horn room and most of the kids had finished auditioning and they still had a few warm-up sections left, so the kids were blasting their brains out. It sounded ... interesting to say the least. Quote
ClaireAnnette07 Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Also, it's not good to practice a ton before tryouts. I did that in-between 4A area qualification tryouts and region band seating when I was a junior. Needless to say, I got 48th out of 54 clarinets that day or something like that. If I hadn't done that, I could have easily been in the 30s at least. Quote
titancoaster Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 dont think about the "competition" side of region band, go out there and preform ignore the fact that you are being judged Quote
borchnork Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I actually focused my mind on just happy thoughts. I know that makes me sound like I'm from the happy house down the street, but I was thinking of things that I enjoyed doing, and the music just kinda came naturally to me. Quote
titancoaster Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 lol, another thing that helped, I sprawled out on the waiting chair, and closed my eyes, and pretended I was going to bed, it was so great I was comfortable, loose, and relaxed I owned on the etudes I did that on but, on the second etude I was first so no ready chair, and I got really nervous and that killed my chances for area, oh well 7th out of 62 in the region still isnt bad. (escpecially considering THREE state finalists were in our region) Quote

It was so embarrassing. He let me come back for a free lesson the next day and, after resting, the difference was probably 10th or so chair on Saturday to 2nd or 3rd on Sunday. I'll definitely be taking things easier as tryouts near this weekend. Quote
dtxtrmpt Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 phase one tomorow. hopefully ill advance. i stayed home sick today cause im nervous and my stomach was being stupid.... ugh..... Quote

It's okay..just think positive I feel you on skipping school. I slept through Chemistry again....for like, the 5th time this semester. I shouldn't have picked an 8AM class on my worst subject Quote
TRtrumpet Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I think I practiced more the actual day of region than I did before... and it didn't help. I think if my lips weren't completely dead I could of MAYBE got 1st. (I got 2nd). But oh well. The guy that beat me is a senior, so yeah. I'm thinking of trying out in the TMEA 4A or 5A track next year. Anyone know how I would do this? Quote
borchnork Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 I think all your director has to do is register you for it. I'm pretty sure the music is exactly the same. Talk to him about it, because he'd know best. We've only had 1 kid ever go on the 5A track, and he actually made state. Quote
Fata1 Posted December 4, 2007 Posted December 4, 2007 Yeah, to go 5A, you just have to have your director register. There are a few kids from our school going 5A this year. Quote
JustAddWat3r Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 i made it to phase 2! i did pretty bad on my audition so im just glad i get a second chance. i was 7th in my room and they took 8. last year i was 9th and they took 8. im happy. now i just gotta kick butt at phase 2. Quote
dtxtrmpt Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 i feel bad. everyone on here is making it. i got 42nd chair... real disappointment.... kinda. my first year and prolly last to get to audition.... but if i dont graduate early like i plan to, then ill get another shot in a year.... Quote
actualgirltrombone Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 I did much better than I thought I would this year =). My way to not be nervous was to basically say screw it, i'm not gonna make region anyway. I was pretty sure I wouldn't, because I had been sick the whole week and hadn't gotten to practice at all. So I went in completely relaxed and didnt get nervous at all. I made it! =D Quote
TRtrumpet Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Congrats! Lol. The music for ATSSB is different though right? Someone up there said it was the same, but I don't think it is. I really want to try out in one of the TMEA tracks next year... but first I have to see if I make state in ATSSB! Quote
b_sax_agent Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Ahh my only phase is on Saturday and I sorta wanna make Area.... It doesn't help that they take 5 people to region and 2 to Area :E Quote
Fata1 Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) Gah, I'm so nervous. I have full confidence in making the region top band but I want to go on to area so bad. I'm pretty sure they only take two French Horns to area so I have to be the second best 4A player. I know one girl who'll probably get the first spot. That leaves one other spot for me, the two seniors at my school, and all the other French Horn players out there. I think I'm more nervous about making area than making state. sax5warrior Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 f region and f nerves and f this -_- Quote
b_sax_agent Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 wooo I'm 6th chair in the region. I made district oh well. I have a next year, unlike the first four people in the region. Quote
JustAddWat3r Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 i got 6th which is really good considering how i almost didnt make it past phase 1. i get to be first chair in the symphonic band. what a great day. Quote
capncrunk Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 i made 1st alternate for region and advanced to pre-area. im so lucky because i got really sick today and almost threw up in the middle of my audition, i sucked so bad... Quote
