But I do not feel as though marching at a non-upper-dci level is hard at all Quote

And I'm just assuming by ''upper level' you mean top 8 or so. Your personal experiences in marching band may not have been hard, but the majority of people that participate in marching band consider it difficult. Go march a year of corps and tell me if you still think its easy ...cough. Quote
whitewing09 Posted January 6, 2008 Posted January 6, 2008 i think it would be difficult to march in high bands like the Woodlands or Bell or idk lol Quote

I don't think we should be afraid to call it what it is because we're afraid of what people might think. Saying you're in marching band to a lot of people brings enough assumptions anyway, so why not be proud that we're intellectual athletes? Quote

No, I just have a bad cold. lol. seriously though. I have to agree with EVERYONE. I know that DCI is labeled an activity. I think that's a good name. Since it is athletic, but at the same time it's extremely intellectual. Even though everyone can fight over most names EX. "Fine Art" "Sport". But you can't really argue whether it's an "Activity" or not. that's just fact. Edited January 6, 2008 by WestCoastCorpsFan Quote

I take it you were going to try out for the Cavaliers. I believe they are the only corps with that policy. If you would have a cell phone than march corps though suit yourself... Quote
Skippy Posted January 7, 2008 Posted January 7, 2008 (edited) Zach, I thought you guys had that policy now as well Edited January 7, 2008 by Skippy Quote

Only one or two corps have that rule. That's a bad excuse to not try out for a corps. My two most recent summers: One where I talked on the cell phone every night, one where I wasn't allowed to have one. As a result, I made no new friends in corps #1 (I knew some guys going in though), and I made many many new friends in corps #2. And if you really need to, it's easy to borrow one from any of the 30ish staff/volunteers/junior officers whenever you want. No cell phone was one of the best things I ever did. Quote

Most corps are still looking for members. If you email some brass caption heads you could probably get a tryout. : ) and if you pick one of those two or so corps you can always go buy a pre-paid phone at best buy or radio shack. btw. Quote
TRUMPet Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 QUOTE(crazyjakeup @ Jan 7 2008, 11:48 AM) in fact i was going to tryout... untill i found out that i would be without a cell phone through the duration of the tour... I think its people who like you who cause them to make that rule. Imagine this senario with bob..... walking back from...lets say, the dumpsters or something... on his way to the busses bob gets a call. He decides to answer his phone and stay where he is because that is the only place he gets reception. the call goes on 5-10 min while everyone loads up on the bus. once everyone is ready to go theyy realise that bob is not there. Where is bob? bob is now busy replying to the texts he just got now that he has a signal. meanwhile the staff is running around trying to figure out how they lost a member.... see isn't the corp better w/o the phone. Btw copies of this lovely story will be avaliable within the month on amazon. Quote

bluebellbrass07 Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Its more of a distraction from rehearsal if anything. And Aaron, we got rid of the rule last year since most people had phones on tour anways. I wouldve been fine with it had they not told us about it 2 weeks before move-ins Quote
crazyjakeup Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) i guess you guys are right... i would find marching drum corps hard for me because of the constant lack of communication between me and the outside world... but i still wish i could march dci... Skippy Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 bluebellbrass07 said: Its more of a distraction from rehearsal if anything. I don't think that's the issue, because I don't know of any corps that would allow you to have your phone during rehearsal. The best reasoning I've seen for it is the camaraderie. And the closer you are to one another the better you're going to perform. Cell phones detract from that. Quote
Skippy Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 crazyjakeup said: but i still wish i could march dci... You can. It's the hardest thing you'll ever do. Anyone who chooses to do DCI is making a huge sacrfice, and I bet 99% of those people would tell you that it's worth it. Quote

Like, in drum corps... you don't even have to make decisions. That sounds bad I guess. But, it's so awesome. They tell when and how to do everything. You just have to wake up, eat breakfast, goto practice, eat lunch, goto practice, goto show, listen to directions, eat dinner, get on bus, goto sleep. EVERY DAY! It's amazing. and on top of that, there isnt drama (in a high school sense)(the guard being an exception), backstabbing, forgetting homework, taking tests, making money. It's just you living with 134, or now, 149 of your brothers and sisters, getting sweaty, tan, and beastly(or crippled in some cases). on the cell phone thing. In all seriousness, I think I would have died without my phone. If I didn't get to call my mom and my best friend, I probably would have shriveled up and died. Meeting people and having fun are what buses and free days are for. Quote
