But, it's so awesome. They tell when and how to do everything. You just have to wake up, eat breakfast, goto practice, eat lunch, goto practice, goto show, listen to directions, eat dinner, get on bus, goto sleep. EVERY DAY! It's amazing. and on top of that, there isnt drama (in a high school sense)(the guard being an exception), backstabbing, forgetting homework, taking tests, making money. It's just you living with 134, or now, 149 of your brothers and sisters, getting sweaty, tan, and beastly(or crippled in some cases). Exactly! Its like being a little kid again! You just wake up, go to school, play with some legos, go to recess, etc. The only decision you have to make it what color shorts to wear. Quote

HashBrownJM Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 Hardest thing you'll ever do? - Yes. Most worth it thing I've done in my life to date? - Definitely. Helps define who you'll be later in life? - Of course. Worth ignoring because of no cell phone? - Choose a different corps. Quote
dop3_mell0w Posted January 10, 2008 Posted January 10, 2008 I dont think it is a sport, and i dont think it should ever be considered as one. some say that to label it as a sport would establish it at a lower level. some say, and quote the dictionary as 'requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature' so therefore band must be a sport. so then, i guess, with that logic you'll have to put yo-yo masters, rubix cube, beauty pagents as sports too. you cant argue that they arent competitive and need some type of physical prowess. and even now people are trying to label eating as a sport. really? really? and you know if you're gonna compete on who's gonna eat the most/fastest, people are gonna want to move using the bathroom after the contest as a sport too (ridiculous, i know, but get what i'm saying?) to me, band is an art, and should be preserved at such. marching is a the physical embellishment of it. and soaking with sweat and glory at the end of the rehearsal or finals performance in your respective 'big contest of the year,' doesnt make it any more a sport Quote

A lot of our staff marched Star of indiana back in the day and they told us a great story relating to that. They had a rehearsal day (no show in the evening) and did what most people call an "underwear run-through" which is exactly what it sounds like. Run through the show wearing only your underwear. Well little did they know a news crew decided to show up that day to film the practice and as they starting coming towards the field the directors freaked out and told everyone to get dressed. As you can imagine, the camera crew was pretty astounded when they came up to 130 or so kids scrambling to put pants on Quote

That would be a pretty funny sight though, lol. Quote
Skippy Posted January 11, 2008 Posted January 11, 2008 Phantom's guard does topless run-throughs on occasion. Or so I heard from a former drum major. Quote
Arabella Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 It's an art, but being in the program feels like a sport- competitions, hours upon hours of practice..... We definitely earn the PE credit, that's for sure. Quote

I couldnt believe that when I heard it Quote

Like some, just walk out there play. then play the fight song and walk off. btw skippy. Im almost 100% positive that isnt true. Unless we are talking about guys. Quote

Bands in colordao have difficult enough of shows to deserve a PE credit. Not to mention they are over a mile above sea level, making it even harder Quote

treblemaker Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I'm pretty sure if I didn't get a P.E. credit for band I wouldn't be able to graduate because I would have no room in my schedule to have a P.E. credit. Gotta love Texas! hehe. Quote
Nancy08 Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Ok kinda going back to the point, I think marching band is a sport. It seems to me that there are three main types of sports. First are the team sports that we are most familiar with. Two teams (or individuals) compete against each other for an alotted amount of time or until they hit a certain score, finish a certain course, etc. Who ever has more (or less in the case of golf etc) points at the end of it wins. Most times these are played in leagues etc. Football, basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, hockey...I could go on. Then you have racing sports which are pretty self explanatory. Teams or individuals compete at the same time or one after the other for the fastest time on some kind of course. Horse racing, track, cross country, bob sleding, etc. Another similar type that I'm grouping in here are sports like the field in track and field, where you are still competing individually, but not for the fastest time. Instead its the highest, farthest, etc. The last type of sport is what I'm calling the artistic sport, although not all are artistic by any means. Individuals or teams compete one at a time, usually with some kind of time limit or range, for scores by a panel of judges, usually scoring in one or more categories. At the end those with the highest scores win. Gymnastics, figure skating, diving, dressage, even some x-games events etc fall into this category, as well as MARCHING BAND. So marching band is a sport, but an artistic sport . Quote
