Lol.

Just to remind you guys.

If once a musical piece was used in a marching show it was put on a 'no-use' list, then we would have like no music left to put on a marching field.

I mean.. bands would have to use music from Hannah Montanna.

Well, at least that way we'd "get the best of both worlds!!!" hahaha... I can't believe I know a song from Hannah Montanna...

But I do think that once one of the major national bands out there does a piece successfully, that the piece really shouldn't be attempted again, unless the program taking it up is confident that they'll be able to top the previous performance.

For example, if I see another band perform "Pan's Labyrinth" in the future, I'm just going to say... "well, that was nice, but Bell pulled that off nearly flawlessly back in 07" unless they totally sweep the floor with their performance.

I see what you mean.

I still have yet to hear a band perform a vast amount of work from Shostakovich as Phantom Regiment did in '96.

If I ever do, I'll probably be bored and say... I have already heard that performed amazingly by PR.

However, I think if they play it well and use it to their own theme, it shouldn't be compared as much.

Oh, I can think of plenty of music that hasn't been put on the marching field yet. There's a wealth of awesome video game music scores that I've never seen done. I've seen almost nothing by the great Yoko Kanno (besides Tank! from Cowboy Bebop, which has been put on the field by many a drum corps and marching band). There's a lot of Classical Crossover stuff I've never seen done that I think would port well to marching band (that British chick String Quartet "Bond", Mike Batt's "The Planets", Apocalyptica--even though they mostly do other artist's stuff)....Bjork's discography is massive and I'm sure there's some stuff on there that hasn't been done yet. When you explore good music outside of the mainstream, you'll find a TON of music that while not popular, is extremely rich and thoughtful and alot of it would sound great on the field.

That aside, you barely hear anybody touch the pre-Bach music from the antiquity/renaissance. Too much preference towards the 19th and 20th century German/Russian composers. Monteverdi, Gabrieli, Susato (well, some composers used themes from Susato and they HAVE been put on the field), and all the other renaissance music.....lots of good (though, simple) stuff.

I'd love to hear a band play the 30+/- second Seikilos Epitaph (written in 200 B.C.--oldest known piece we actually have "sheet music" for) on the field as a soft closer to their show...maybe using a delicate harp synth solo or just tap it out on the Glockenspiel.....or heck a full band a'cappella chorus.

There's so much music in this world.....101 years of marching band halftime shows haven't even scratched the surface. Hannah Montana indeed *shudder*.

Duncanville 1998 was all Shostakovich and only shared the Finale of Symphony #5 with Phantom. The rest was Festive Overture and excerpts from his Jazz Suite.

Anybody have any videos of Richland from this year?

They're always really fun to watch, but they didn't do any BOA contests this year so they're not on the Fan Network. Hopefully someone has a recording of them from Area, State or DMI.
