sax5warrior Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 (edited) Holy crap! I watched Mansfield's TOC show on youtube and I'll tell you what, if they polish that show up and the brass hold out their phrases, they might be a darkhorse in Area B. Of course marching is a different matter, especially when they got destroyed on the judging sheet. Edited October 2, 2008 by sax5warrior Quote
the terminator Posted October 2, 2008 Author Posted October 2, 2008 unfortunately for them that area is just ridiculously good that i think the best they can do is get alternate, but still they looked very strong early on Quote
takigan Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I dunno....they got absolutely slaughtered last UIL and Area B is not a pushover area in the least. Musically I think they might have a shot, visually not so much. What bugs me about the visual aspect is that, although the drill is intense and curvaceous (therefore; difficult), the drill writer put in a lot of staggered marching where the whole band doesn't always march simultaneously, so even though there's a lot going on in different focal points of the field that pass of to each other, individual band members are only having to learn 5 or 6 minutes of the 7 1/2 minutes of drill that is on the field. There are a couple parts of the show where the kids are just walking around with just a drone in the pit, and in the part of the show where the drill folds over on itself from the scatterdrill to where the whole form moves as one, the kids on the very outside of the form wait nearly an entire minute before they actually begin structured marching again. This show runs the risk of having varied judge opinions at UIL because some judges won't catch this staggering technique and some judges will with the result being a huge spread between marching judge opinions. I will say though that the drill that does move (and there's still a lot of it) is very well executed for this time of the year and have no doubts Mansfield will do very well, particularly at BOA. You just put into words exactly what I was thinking. Their drill writer is also their Guard Instructor, Marching Instructor, and band director. Lol. I found it interesting, too. Part of me thinks it is because the Mansfield band is majority freshman. The drill writer probably did the staggered to hide some of that. It is a possibility. This is the best Mansfield has ever sounded, in my opinion. I think their music is stronger than their marching, but the guard is stronger than the music. They did win GE in finals, so we'll see. It will be an interesting year for them. While we're on the sound subject, Coppell had a brilliant musical performance. Definitely kept me interested. Quote
borchnork Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I just got full details of Centennial's show. The title is "Get a Clue" based on Enigma Variations. It's a really cute and funny show. They basically have a game of clue going on back field. The guard is dressed in Red, Blue and Yellow dresses, like the Clue game pieces. I loved it. Quote

I think they have a real nice thing going on, but they need to play much louder, but yeah they also have awesome colorguard costumes and it seems like a really fun show Quote

diamonds and drums Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Stephen F. Austin HS - Sugar Land, Texas "Meditations" The Canyon by Philip Glass Mercy from The Prayer Cycle by John Elias String Quartet No. 4, Mvt 5 by Bela Bartok LOVE this show. I agree completely! The music is very difficult and the formations are quick and impressive. I do know that they are adding some more visual effects this week. I could not believe how far along they are with missing 6 day's of practice. Quote

lhstrumpet Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 Does anybody know Westwood's musical selections, particularly their first movement? I couldn't recognize it and neither could my directors, but it sounded oddly familiar. Quote
