Lucas Oil Stadium will not be completed in time for DCI's 2008 World Championships as originally planned which means that DCI is officially changing the site of the competition to Indiana University's Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, IN.

Memorial Stadium in Bloomington will play host to Marching Music's Major League

Several thoughts on this:

1) A pioneer moment in the Marching Arts is being put on hiatus. I'm a little disappointed.

2) Contracts are a two-way street. Both DCI and the City of Indianapolis/Dome Officials/Contractors have to hold up their ends of the deal. I wonder if DCI is anticipating some sort of compensation for having to move this historic event.

3) Because of the dramatic change in venues, going from a state-of-the-art dome to a college stadium, I would hope that ticket prices would be lowered. However, we don't live in a perfect world.

4) Our good friends in Indiana and at IndianaMarching.com are telling us that IU Stadium is a great venue for drum corps. If anyone would know about that stadium, it would be them.

5) The distance between Bloomington and Indianapolis is 54 miles, just shy of the distance between San Antonio and Austin. If you plan on going, book your hotel in Bloomington immediately. Hotel choices in Bloomington are scarce at best (For example, two Hilton-branded hotels, zero Marriott hotels). Hertz and Avis will clean up on the commuters from Indy that weekend.

If I remember correctly, didn't DCI say they would provide transport (shuttles) for all of those people still in Indy?

I have no idea where I read that now...

Sounds like a Drum Corps Fantasy Camp. They should use the potential bus money to help lower ticket prices!

Most of this situation is clearly not DCI's fault. Then again, the move to sign a 10 year venue contract with a stadium that hadn't even been built yet was a questionable move to begin with.

thanks DCI... now, I'm so excited.

Hey try to look on the bright side. At least we don't have to worry about finals being in a dome (I always hated dome shows).

And at least you are fortunate to get to march. You shouldn't have to perform in a state of the art venue to enjoy your summer. At least thats not what its about for me

I can't remember but weren't they going to open the roof at Lucas Oil Stadium if the weather was decent outside? Lucas Oil isn't a dome, as there is a retractable roof where the roof and sides of the stadium open to make it more of an open air field.

I'm not sure about DCI, but I'm pretty sure that BOA had already decided on a closed roof.

yeah I was meaning to imply in my post that we don't have to worry about it being indoors assuming the weather is bad.

And technically its not a 'dome' but I can't imagine the sound being that different. For high schools its fine but for drum corps so much of the sound is seems to be washed out.

The pics of the field make it look nice enough. I was hoping for Lucas Oil really bad, but yeah.

Besides, it can't be worse than the Rose Bowl last year...right? They might actually have good turf for us to march on. And the stadium might not be built to be a sound trap.

Anyone who marched in the Bowl last August knows what kind of nightmare that field looked like. And any one who marched the first half of it remembers almost tripping on that chunk of turf that wasn't flattened down enough in the middle of the field.

Long story short....at least it's not Pasadena. Or Orlando.

Oh jeez. We were also looking RIGHT into the sun. That was brutal

And I quote from the following article: DCI Moves To Bloomington

Buses have been arranged to shuttle people to Bloomington and back. And the cost of that is being “spread around,” said Dan Acheson, DCI’s executive director and chief executive officer.

Looks like the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association, along with the City of Indianapolis, will be helping with the costs of these shuttles. Like I said before, this would be like some sort of Drum Corps Fantasy Bus. Don't forget your Goldbond and your fitted sheet for the seat!!!!!

from George Hopkins weblog:

with DCI going inside for champs and most regionals there is going to be a deemphasis on percussion.

There has to be .... you cannot hear .... you just cannot hear in a dome.

So ... how do you put together a marching music show that is intriguing and thrilling with concert percussion?

And what does that do to marching percussion enthusiasts?

What do we do with all of the performers who want to THROWDOWN?

or do you write a show for 30 percussionists but have them play at pp the entire show?

Ever been to BOA?

For all of the talk of theme shows ... what makes drum corps .... drum corps ... is the DRUMS.

But ... a dome ... oh my, i see it and what do we do about it.

See ... for all corps, and I voted against this, the decision to go inside .... and yes, the dome will be closed most of the time ... will change the face of shows.

Lucas Oil was designed with the marching arts in mind. We have been assured that it is acoustically sound, both plus and sans roof. Then again, we were assured that Lucas Oil would be ready for 2008. Nevertheless, we won't have to worry about something like this until 2009.
