Now to the obsessive-compulsive overanalysis...

Anyone have any guesses as to why Richland and Haltom are only doing San Antonio this year? I can understand them wanting the time in the dome to prep for State, but why not do any of the others?

Bell I can see wanting the later date (same weekend as last year's Arlington) for their show (whatever it is)...bit more time to clean before the home-stretch into Nationals... Anyone have any thoughts as to why TWHS is coming up this-a-way?

Only 3 Texas bands at nationals?

any explanation on the small number?

And 52 bands at San Antonio on a state year, man!......One of these years SA's going to max out 60 bands every year whether it's a state year or not.

I just got home from work. I'll spend the next few hours dissecting this and I'll get back to you all soon........ok, I'm back now.

Arlington Regional:

21 bands registered so far.

Down five bands from last year.

Noticeable absences of Richland, Haltom, and L.D. Bell. This could be due to them getting paperwork in late. This could be due to some sort of SAT-related test this weekend. This could be due to the fact that the regional is a week earlier than last years.

Houston Regional:

31 bands registered so far.

Down three bands from last year.

It looks like the usual suspects for the Houston Regional, with the exception of L.D. Bell. It's great to see the Houston Regional closer to the end of the season, if only one week later than usual.

El Paso Regional

Four bands registered so far.

Down ten bands from last year.

This is really saddening. I would have thought that the announcement of the Sun Bowl as the venue would have sent local bands running to the Post Office to mail off their applications. It looks like programs are a little gun-shy about attending the El Paso Regional, especially after they used my Tio Nacho's backyard as the venue.

San Antonio Super Regional:

52 bands registered so far.

Down three bands from last year.

Usual suspects at this Super Regional.

On behalf of Txbands.com, we welcome Skiatook and Owasso H.S. from Oklahoma and Loveland H.S. from Colorado to the 2008 San Antonio Super Regional.

Texas Bands attending Grand Nationals:

L.D. Bell H.S. - Hurst, Texas.

Defending Grand National Champion. This will be their 6th appearance at Grand Nationals.

Colleyville Heritage H.S. - Colleyville, Texas.

Two Regional Finalist appearances in 2007. This will be their first appearance at Grand Nationals.

Hidalgo H.S. - Hidalgo, Texas.

Defending San Antonio Super Regional Class A Champion. This will be their first appearance at Grand Nationals. This is also the first time Texas has sent a Class A band to Grand Nationals.

Miscellaneous:

Americas H.S. from El Paso, Texas will be attending the East Los Angeles Regional.

The Fall Preview Experience, originally announced to be held at James Bowie H.S., is not on the Regionals list. However, it is still listed as one of the three Fall Preview Experiences taking place this next season.

Ponderings:

Either the struggling economy has taken its toll on the marching arts or there are a lot of programs that are putting all of their eggs into the proverbial Super Regional/State Contest basket. Haltom, Richland, James Bowie, Westlake, Spring and Brazoswood are all only doing one Regional. Has the rising cost of gas affected how programs carry out their season? I'm thinking yes (And Arby's). I'm wondering why so many great Dallas area bands have elected to not attend the Arlington Regional. To give you some perspective on this, with the absence of just five bands from the Arlington Regional, you can eliminate one full block of bands from Prelims competition. This will be a season to remember. Then again, here in Texas, EVERY season is!!!!!!!!!!

My first thought was that the Birdville Marching Contest might interfere with Arlington, but it is on the same day as Houston, not Arlington. There are often late additions to these lists, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them in Arlington anyways.

I think the Bowie Fall Preview Experience was canceled, because the South Carolina and Oklahoma Fall Preview Experiences are also listed on the Regional page. BOA probably hasn't updated the Fall Preview Experience page on their website.

It's probably because Texas bands have been to Grand Nationals so many times in recent years. The Woodlands went in 2006 and last year, James Bowie & Winston Churchill in 2006, Ronald Reagan, Richland, Stephen F. Austin went last year, and so many other bands that have gone since 2005. I would expect to see more bands sign up in 2009 & 2010.

are those lists final?

This list is in no way close to set. It's only May. This is just a tentative list. Bands may still drop out or sign up depending on the number of openings at the competition.

how many contests does an average band attend each year?

im just curious because looking ahead to our schedule this year, we have a possibility of attending 7 contests total if we advance past region and area. last year, we had 4 contests total.

7 is a lot. On a state year, I would consider 2-3 non-uil contests + up to 3 UIL contests for a total of 5-6 for a band that advances all the way to State to be normal.

The Woodlands CP

Houston is definitely the "stacked" Regional this time around and it's hard to place sure bets for this reason, plus some shaky programs in recent years (I've always been under the impression that Spring is an incredible program on par with Westfield, Cedar Park, Churchill etc.....but I'm no longer sure where to place them after their uncharacteristically low placements last year, same goes for Cy-Falls which is a recovering program) make it hard to tell how it'll all play out.

lafayette is good... but idk about them being a for sure finalist..

we beat them in st. louis last year, and it was one of our worst performances.

Yes, at the 2006 St. Louis Super Regional, you beat them. You were 16th. They were 17th. Last year, Lafayette placed 6th at the BOA Houston Regional. Our boys in the stands were very impressed with them and I trust their judgement. I have no problem calling them a lock for Finals again. This is Lafayette H.S. from Louisiana.

Yeah, Lafayette Louisiana was pretty good last year. They looked and sounded very similar to Broken Arrow (especially Aqua) in a lot of ways and really brought a big presence onto the field. I look for them to be a strong contender for a finals spot in Houston again, even as stacked as that competition is.

I wish they were coming to Houston again, but they're going to the Arlington Regional instead. And since Arlington is weaker, I'd expect them to be in Finals again if they were anything like they were again this past season.

You know, I love it when we get to see multiple bands from other states attend our Regionals. I'm particularly fond of the ones that come from states other than the immediate neighboring ones (Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico) because you know exactly why they're taking the time to come down here (to show their school how good Texas bands are and to see how they compare). It's typical to see multiple states represented at other regionals in the midwest since the states are so close together in those areas while Texas competitions are primarily homogenous since the state is so ridiculously huge!

I wish I was as into marching arts in 2002 as I am now so I could have been a part of the hype when Carmel HS from Indiana showed up at the front gate of the Texas BOA stronghold in San Antonio and proceeded to slaughter all of the Texas bands, capturing the Gold medal......well, maybe not 'slaughtered'...it was actually pretty close as .25 was all that separated Carmel and L.D. Bell;--which, based on the scores, was obviously the only Texas band at the competition that could match Carmel man for man since a 3-5 point spread separated those 2 the whole time from the rest of the sea of bands that were there competing).

It's concepts like this that make me wish Broken Arrow HS would regularly attend Arlington and San Antonio. But there's no obvious reason as to why this is and it's not like you can e-mail the band director to ask why this is as I think that would be kind of rude, lol ^^; .

I'm with you on that one buddy. Owasso last attended the San Antonio Super Regional in 2004, placing 3rd in Finals. Loveland last attended the San Antonio Super Regional in 2006, capturing the Class AA Title. Both performances were fun to watch and I can assure you that our staff went nuts for them each time they stepped on the field.
