Danpod Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 The bloodbath has ended. The Alamodome, in shambles. I've been going to DCI Southwestern for the last eight years and this year, by far, had the most standing ovations. Here's your top 12 so far: 1. Blue Devils 2. The Cavaliers 3. Carolina Crown 4. Phantom Regiment 5. The Cadets 6. Bluecoats 7. Santa Clara Vanguard 8. Blue Knights 9. Boston Crusaders 10. Blue Stars 11. Glassmen 12. Crossmen Here's what to look for this week: - DCI Southeastern Championships this Saturday. Same deal as DCI Southwestern. Top four from the afternoon show make the night show. Schedule to be released soon. - Two more Texas shows! Denton tonight, Wichita Falls Monday night. Get out there and watch! - Murfreesboro, TN on Friday. This show only invites the top eight from DCI Southwestern to participate. Keep an eye on DCI.org this week because in the past, fans have been able to vote for the performance order at this event. Danpod Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 7/20 - Denton, TX Blue Devils - 92.45 The Cavaliers - 91.40 Bluecoats - 88.05 Blue Knights - 83.35 Boston Crusaders - 82.60 Crossmen - 78.70 Troopers - 76.20 Pioneer - 70.05 Blue Devils still on top comfortably. Blue Knights improve on their lead over Boston. Quote
borchnork Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 hmmm... What to say about Denton??? It was awesome... but I'm disappointed not to see my Cavies on top. =[ Quote
ftwdrummer Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I was at Denton, too (wish I'd known you were going, borch...could've had a mini-MeetMe!). Cavies show was technically perfect...but it didn't really reach to the audience at all. It left me cold, and the three non-corps nuts with me (mom, dad, and little sister) agreed. Blue Devils, on the other hand, we all liked. Dad enjoyed it because it was stylistically similar to his college marching band (one of the few "scatter" bands out there), Mom enjoyed the concept and use of Sweeney Todd, little sis enjoyed the music and the GE (the yard-line tightrope-walking in the first movement, for instance). I liked it because the musical concept is solid, they used the concept of "Constantly Risking Absurdity" to its fullest, and it showed excellent performance qualities. Quote
borchnork Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 I do agree... there was something missing out of the Cavaliers show. It was perfect the way they performed it... but it's lacking something to really hook me. I also felt very similar about the Knights show... I just didn't get it... I kinda sat there after and was... confused more than anything. Quote
Danpod Posted July 22, 2008 Author Posted July 22, 2008 7/21: Wichita Falls, TX The Cadets - 90.60 Santa Clara Vanguard - 88.00 Glassmen - 81.75 Madison Scouts - 78.05 Pioneer - 69.10 Open Class Revolution - 75.45 Good scores all around. The Cadets top 90 for the first time this year. Quote
Xenon Posted July 22, 2008 Posted July 22, 2008 Word on the street is that The Cadets have taken the cancer stuff out of the narration script. Quote
Danpod Posted July 22, 2008 Author Posted July 22, 2008 7/21: Monroe, LA Carolina Crown - 90.45 Phantom Regiment - 90.30 Spirit - 79.65 Pacific Crest - 77.65 Mandarins - 74.15 Phantom Regiment is breathing down Crown's neck. Crown takes General Effect and sweeps Visual. Regiment closed the gap with Music, specifically their percussion score. Spirit puts up a nice score. 7/21: Broken Arrow, OK The Cavaliers - 91.25 Blue Knights - 84.85 Blue Stars - 83.35 Colts - 80.20 Troopers - 77.10 The Academy - 72.80 The Cavaliers score actually dropped from last night. The race for that 12th spot heats up with the Colts impressive score. Quote

Danpod Posted July 23, 2008 Author Posted July 23, 2008 7/22: Hattiesburg, MS Blue Devils - 93.05 Carolina Crown - 90.40 Phantom Regiment - 89.90 Spirit - 80.05 Pacific Crest - 78.25 Mandarins - 75.45 Blue Devils sweep General Effect and Visual. 1.1 gap in General Effect, 1.6 gap in Visual. Crown takes Music. Crown holds off Regiment for a second straight night, increasing the gap slightly. Spirit and Pacific Crest seem to be making a run for that 12th spot. 7/22: Wichita, KS The Cadets - 91.45 Glassmen - 82.45 Crossmen - 80.80 Troopers - 76.70 The Academy - 76.55 The Cadets improve, as expected. Nice score from The Crossmen. They were able to top Glassmen in General Effect Music. The Academy finally wakes up and pulls nearly even to the Troopers. Food for thought: The Academy tied for 2nd in one of the Music subcaptions (Music Ensemble Musicianship). Quote

Glassmen leap over the Blue Stars. Madison makes a case for the 12th spot. Pioneer is scoring very well for this point in the season. Quote

"Yeah, I'm gonna have to give this a Baker's Dozen in Auxillary." Sometimes, judges cannot make it to contests. Flights get delayed or family emergencies come up. Stuff just happens. There are usually a few no-shows a year so it's not as uncommon as some might think. It would be great if DCI had the money to put judges up in hotel rooms a few days in advance to ensure that they will be at the contest. In most cases, it's just not feasible, especially during a season in which DCI had to cut the amount of judges in the early season to save money. Quote
