Folks, the season is coming to a close! The push for World Championships next week is on. Here's your top 12, per last night's results at the Southeastern Championships:

1. Blue Devils

2. The Cavaliers

3. Phantom Regiment

4. Carolina Crown

5. The Cadets

6. Bluecoats

7. Santa Clara Vanguard

8. Blue Knights

9. Blue Stars

10. Boston Crusaders

11. Glassmen

12. Crossmen

Here's what to watch for this week:

- DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown, PA this weekend. This show has been a staple in Drum Corps for three decades. The Eastern Classic is split into a Friday and Saturday show. Half of the corps in World Class go on Friday, while the others in World Class go on Saturday.

- Expect to see a lot more activity from the Open Class corps. Due to operating costs, corps in Open Class have a very limited touring schedule. You'll see a lot of new names this week so I'll be sure to keep track of the Open Class scores as well.

Enjoy the week!

The overall trend though is that the Cavies are closing that gap. San Antonio was 2 points. Denton was just over 1, and now we're down to .85...

Haha, hopeful thinking for my favorite corp. =]

Why can't you have a favorite corps? Isn't that what it's about? You have a favorite football team... They could lose every game of the season but they are still your favorite. Doesn't mean everyone has to root for the team most likely going to the Super Bowl. Same for DCI you can root for whomever you like no matter how "good" their show is.

The man has a good point. The gap is closing up. If this were happening to the Blue Devils, I'd probably look for similar things as well. However, I think The Cavaliers' brass performance is going to keep them from getting even closer.

Quick recaps from NightBeat (Charlotte, NC):

- Blue Devils take General Effect, Visual, and tie with Crown for Music.

- Crown nails down a 9.8 in Music Ensemble Musicianship. This score is awesome, but where do you go from there with a week left?

Blue Devils go from 1.2 ahead of Regiment at Atlanta to 1.6 tonight. Boston jumps ahead of the Blue Stars by a good margin.

man.. my friend in crossmen told me that

they hadd a really good show today and it started

raining in the middle of their performance!

but too bad they didn't get scoredd.

it would've helped them.

Reminds me of what happened to the Glassmen a few years ago. It started absolutely pouring in the middle of the performance. They finished the entire show, downpour and all. There is a short video clip of that very performance with a close-up of a colorguard member who seems to be having the time of her life in the rain. Probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen.

Someone posted on Drum Corps Planet that the Crossmen received an 83.30 tonight, although the Tennessee contest was rained out after their performance.

It's an unofficial score, but if it holds true....GOOD for the Crossmen. I bet they performed like they were pissed and had a chip on their shoulder after being hosed by the judges last night in Charlotte with a 3 point drop back in the 79's, after being above 80.00 for over a week now.

The weird thing about that Charlotte show was that it wasn't like one judge slammed the Crossmen. Their rankings were consistent across the board. Maybe it was a bad run but nevertheless, great job Crossmen!

Crown holds the lead over The Cadets. Glassmen leapfrog over the Blue Knights by the smallest of margins. Last Saturday, Blue Knights were 8th and Glassmen were 11th. The Crossmen and the Colts are neck and neck. The Crossmen have had a hectic week with their show rainout and the performance at the Kennedy Center. It looks like a two corps race for the 12th spot. War Bones!

Everyone holds steady. Blue Stars seem to be making a run for a solid 8th spot.

Quick recap of the Warrenton, VA show:

- Crown takes General Effect, Visual, and Music.

- The reason for the Glassmen jump tonight had to do with General Effect and Visual. They were a solid 3rd place in General Effect and Visual, except for the Visual Performance caption.

- The Colts are breathing down The Crossmen's neck. There are a few reasons as to why. The Crossmen must be a little worn out from a cancelled show, which they did not receive the critique from, followed up by a performance at the Kennedy Center. If The Crossmen are going to hold off the Colts, they will have to do it with Music. After the General Effect and Visual Captions from last night, the Colts and Crossmen were tied. Crossmen won Music by .35, which put them over the top.

Blue Devils member recovering

Thursday, July 31, 2008 - 2:38 PM

From a Blue Devils press release:

Blue Devils euphonium horn player Joseph Ricard had a deformation of an artery in his brain since birth that suddenly burst while the Blue Devils 'A' Corps was in Landisville, Pa., Wednesday, July 30. The pressure from the resulting clot pushing against the bottom of his brain was relieved by surgery. It may be three days or more before it is know if he will have any lasting effects.

Ricard is in his first year with the Blue Devils and marched as a member of the Blue Devils B from 2004 to 2007. He graduated from De La Salle High School (Concord, Calif.) this summer and will be going to the Berklee College of Music.

The Blue Devils organization prayers and thoughts are with Joe and his family. The corps is determined to perform their collective hearts out the final week of the summer tour so Joe can feel their energy as he recovers in the hospital. The Blue Devils will pass on thoughts and well wishes to Joe through e-mail at: joericard@bluedevils.org.

Very scary stuff. I hope everything turns out well for Joseph. Our thoughts are with him and his family.

Nice score from The Cavaliers tonight. I don't know what's up with Boston. Me thinks it's a Brass problem. The Academy pulls close to Pacific Crest.

Blue Devils pulls off a great score despite heavy hearts tonight. Crown holds firm over The Cadets. Glassmen pull away from the Blue Knights. Crossmen close the gap on the Blue Knights.

Prediction: If the Blue Devils are ahead of The Cavaliers by .8 or more tomorrow night, I'd start polishing that DCI Title for the 13th time.

The Cavaliers snap the Blue Devils season-long undefeated streak. The Cavaliers take Music and General Effect. Blue Devils take Visual. General Effect decided this contest with The Cavaliers winning the caption by .4. Glassmen, Boston, and the Blue Knights are neck and neck. The Cavaliers are done until Quarterfinals. The Blue Devils will compete on Monday before going off to DCI Quarterfinals. Looks like this year, whomever pulls off the better performance on Finals night will walk away with the World Title.
