actualgirltrombone Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 So, has anyone else seen any examples of this? The two ones that I can think of right now is the Cadets taking Cedar Park's winking smilie face and Cavaliers 95 taking the awesome ripple move from Spring 93. Anyone else got anything?
MaverickBand15 Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 hahaha when i first saw the thread i read it as "Cops stealing from HS band" i was like....wth! hahahaha

MaverickBand15 Posted July 27, 2008 Posted July 27, 2008 it was not until i opened the thread that i realized what it was actually about.
radchad Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 It's not really stealing. I mean. It's kind of like football plays. None of them are copyrighted or anything. Just because one band does them, doesn't mean another can't. So if a band splits into two blocks, each row alternating, and they jazz run back into eachother.. they are copying every band that has ever done that move? ... Just saying.
TRUMPet Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I agree that they cant technically steal a visual but realy IN pursuit of happiness, The pursuit of happiness.... way too similar
mbui Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 This isn't about corps "stealing from marching band", but I'm just throwing this out there since a lot of Cedar Park people are talking about The Cadets and the similarities.... Your 2008 show is exactly the same music that Stephen F. Austin HS did in 2005. Aaron Copland's "Grohg Ballet" Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" & "Medea's Dance of Vengeance" Grohg was SFA's opener, Adagio was their ballad and Medea was their closer.
treblemaker Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 I'm sure the Cadets had their show designed before CP ever released theirs. The title and happy face may be the same but other than that the shows are completely different. It was probably just coincidence.

actualgirltrombone Posted July 28, 2008 Author Posted July 28, 2008 I'm not saying its a bad thing! I think its great that bands and corps both use each other for inspiration. I'll also fully admit that our show next year (the music selections at least) are "stolen" from different corps by way of SFA. I just think its an interesting phenemonon that corps, which most people consider elite, sometimes take concepts from high school bands, and I wanted to know if there were any more examples of this. Also, there's a reason stealing was in quotes. I know its not actually STEALING, but when you see almost the exact same move made in almost the exact same way, it does bring to mind the thought that it might not be entirely original.
gavinrh Posted July 28, 2008 Posted July 28, 2008 blooooooooo! haha a certain piece featuring the tuba section...

Trumpet Master Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Well to be fair, high school bands do copy A LOT of material from drum corps. I know from experience... my school has even been called a phantom regiment look-a-like by some people on here who shall remained unnamed. We did the famous triangle with the front row kneeling down, the leg kick halt and even did a straight copy of Phantom 1996. To lose any sleep over something like a smiley face and show name being copied is kinda pointless. Even SFA, in 2006, had their show entitled The Fire Within which just happened to our show title that year. I posted our title here on TXB and then to find out that they copied the name was a less than stellar feeling. Really can't we just get along or Danpod may have to open up his Pit of Doom or something.
TRUMPet Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Quote Well to be fair, high school bands do copy A LOT of material from drum corps. thats what drum corps are for (any "pro level sport really") go ask any five year old who their favirote sport star is and ask em stuff about what then do and lo-and-behold they start jumpng arround pretending to be them. its supposed to happen that way. its the stuff going in reverse that were talking about. you dont see A-rod out there trying to be like a 5-yr old tee-ball team. (although id love to see that)
mbui Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 These days in drum corps, you will see a lot of high school marching band influence in DCI and vice versa. Why? Because some of the top high school band educators and show designers teach or design shows in DCI. Just look up any staff list from a bunch of drum corps and you will see that a lot of them teach/design for a high school marching band, especially in the upper echelon of BOA. Kevin Ford - Tarpon Springs HS, FL head director, Richland HS, TX drill designer, Blue Stars drill designer Mitch Rogers - Stephen F. Austin HS, TX drill designer, former drill designer for Plymouth Canton EP, MI, Bluecoats drill designer Key Poulan - Santa Clara Vanguard music arranger and music arranger for marching bands across the country Richard Saucedo - Carmel HS, IN head director, Cavaliers brass arranger Frank Sullivan - Tarpon Springs HS, FL music arranger, Blue Stars music arranger Matt Harloff - Avon HS, IN assistant director, Carolina Crown brass tech Aaron Guidry - Crossmen music designer, Broken Arrow HS, OK music designer, former Ronald Reagan HS, TX music designer Wayne Downey - Blue Devils brass arranger, The Woodlands HS, TX music tech J.D. Shaw - Phantom Regiment brass arranger and arranger for numerous marching bands across the country Michael Klesch - Carolina Crown brass arranger, Stephen F. Austin HS, TX music arranger, Cedar Park HS, TX music arranger Pete Weber - Santa Clara Vanguard drill designer and drill designer for numerous marching bands across the country Don Hill - The Woodlands HS, TX music arranger, L.D. Bell HS, TX music arranger, former music arranger for Plymouth Canton EP, MI, Glassmen brass arranger Just to name a few. I could go on and on.
TRUMPet Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Dont forget Bob Chreste (Chesters!!! *Dont ask) Vanguard brass caption head, music arranger for Lake Travis High (?), and Vista Ridge, Associate Director at Cedar Park.

Does it really matter? He was just naming some off the top of his head probably.
TRUMPet Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 i know i just think bobs cool so i thought id throw his name in too. nothing wrong with that, just givin props
radchad Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 mbui said: Yup, and I thought Richland did "Hummingbrrd" better than the Bluecoats too. Well, Richland played on Concert Tubas, while Bluecoats played on Contras, while moving and performing drill. It's no excuse, but I just thought I should point it out. And in that case, the Bluecoats did it first, technically. xD
radchad Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I wish you wouldn't use the word copy like it's a bad thing. I don't even see it as copying. It's more like.. inspiring. I mean, to a lot of High Schools, Drum Corp is just that. Inspiration. I know schools that use bits of past Drum Corp shows, or bits of past BOA GN Winners.. and the kids.. that is all they can talk about. I don't know. In the world of marching band, I don't think it's copying. It's about taking something, whether someone used it or not, and making it your own.

Mr. Chreste's wife was my history teacher in 8th grade...i know it's random.
whitewing09 Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 (edited) I really don;t people should use the word copying, becauss frankly almost everything has been used buy more than 2 bands lol, I am pretty sure CP wasn't they first to a winking smiley face... maybe other not as celebrated bands have used it. Edited July 30, 2008 by whitewing09
TRUMPet Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 Just to make things clear... its the fact that a CORPS is using stuff from highschool shows, i call that copying. Corps shouldnt be inspired by HS bands unless its inspiring them to never suck that much (dont deny it al HS bands suck in comparison). Quote Mr. Chreste's wife was my history teacher in 8th grade...i know it's random. Sweet where at? Quote t's more like.. inspiring.I mean, to a lot of High Schools, Drum Corp is just that. Inspiration. True as it should be... just not the other way around. (BTW The Cadets should really tell us if they got the idea from CP...which ill give you this much, it came from Chreste a Corps guy... i'd just love it to find out if our show inspired a world class corps.)
whitewing09 Posted July 30, 2008 Posted July 30, 2008 I'm sorry I'm really not trying to be mean, but this just seems like someone needs to get over their band. Maybe this isn't the case, however by the way you're saying things it does seem to be the case. This isn't only my opinion, I have talk to other people who feel the same way. They used a smiley face? Yes that is pretty cool, but time to move on.
radchad Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 Well you know what? If a drum corp decides to use something from a HS school show, it just shows you how good the HS band is. I don't see why it can't work both ways. Ever heard of teaching an old dog new tricks? It's possible.
