steg5 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 How many colleges actually require flute players to learn the picc and play picc for marching season? And I don't understand how you can make this sound remotely okay. With two piccolos in my band, I think that is good enough. Anything more than 3 is pushing it. Quote

All three of them are in Varsity Concert band too, and none of them want to stop playing picc. There going to have to decide who plays picc during concert season. I remember last year during our Christmas, one alone covered our second band. Our head director had to go up there and tell her to chill out before the second piece. Oh, and so far I have completed applications to UNT and Stephen F. Austin. In the next weeks im going to apply to UT San Antonio, Texas State, Texas Tech, and University of Houston. And as a wild card...Louisiana State University. Edited October 13, 2008 by rpd Quote

That's what I was told at least when I auditioned there. We march 5 piccolos at UNT, and you can't even hear them... Quote
steg5 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I'm not even attempting to apply to that many colleges. :] There are only 7 colleges in the state of Texas that have what I want to do; Lamar, Tech, Texas Christian, Texas Women's, Stephen F Austin, and I can't remember the other two. But I know Lamar doesn't have a marching band, so I'm not applying there. Quote

Haha :].. I think thats going to take awhile to form. I'd rather be with a 400 person band than one that's just starting out. Quote
jd2012 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) yea we march over 10 piccs at Arkansas, no flutes (as for how they sound remotely good, that's a great question. Being a trumpet player I wish I had a definite answer, making 64 trumpets sound good is hard enough)... sorry I don't know exactly who arranged it, but i'll look into it and let you know come visit us up here! I had siblings go to Tech, A&M, and UT and I can say I like it here the best (sorry that's my little bit of propaganda for the day, haha) Edited October 13, 2008 by jd2012 Quote
steg5 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Nothing against Arkansas, but it's just too far. I would never go to A&M. Military style... mmm that's just not me. :] I have "visited" both Tech and UT, I don't really like the atmosphere of being part of a city. It would make me kind of confused. But then again being a part of nothing, not so great either. Going to Tech would be more of what I'm used because all throughout my childhood, I've lived "in the middle of nowhere". I hate applying for colleges and everything that goes with it! Quote
borchnork Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 ahh, yah. UNT oddly enough is the middle of nowhere compared to what I'm used to. lol. how sad... Quote
steg5 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I don't even know where that's at. In reality I don't know where a lot of colleges are... "/ Quote
borchnork Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I have lots of friends all over the place, so I've gotten to do a good few road trips to several colleges. =] We added a few measures of new music into our state show. It's creepy and I love it!!!!! Also, the winds got cut out of the last like... 25 measures of our opener... weird. I wonder what they are planning... Quote
jd2012 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 what's the rehearsal schedule down there at UNT like, up here we do 3:30 to 5:20 monday, tuesday, thursday, and friday, plaus gameday mornings (I love not having the 7am rehearsals like we did at in mckinney, haha Quote
borchnork Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Uhm, rehearsal for us is usually: Mon, Wed, Fri 4:15-6:15. And then on game days, we meet 4 hours before the game starts to have a practice, then a parade. Quote
Steeldrum Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 If what you're looking for is a drum corps style marching band check out Jacksonville State University. Their marching band is called The Marching Southerners with about 400 members. Not in Texas but it is an affordable college in Alabama with a great music program and a beautiful campus. Check out this video from a recent contest exhibition. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=36401896159 Quote
