Danpod Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 Here's your official thread for the Open Class World Championships! DCI decided to merge Divisions II and III together to form Open Class, starting with this season. These are smaller corps with younger membership and a shorter tour schedule. With that being said, I can assure you that these corps work their tail off to perform their show to the best of their abilities. Quarterfinals Schedule (Central Standard Time): 1. Spirit of Newark/New Jersey – 2:30 p.m. 2. Les Stentors – 2:46 p.m. 3. Strangnas – 3:02 p.m. 4. Racine Scouts – 3:18 p.m. 5. Colt Cadets – 3:34 p.m. 6. The top 17 corps from today will perform at Semifinals on Friday Morning. The top 12 from Semifinals will advance to Open Class Finals on Saturday. Typically, scores are announced during the contest, which means DCI will probably update their site as they go. Feel free to update the scores as they come in. Let's go Revo! Danpod Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 Quick little update: There are two International Corps performing: Beatrix from Hilversum, Holland and Strangnas from Strangnas, Sweden. These two corps are not eligible for the Open Class Title because there is a separate International Class. Should any of these two corps be among the top 17 for Semifinals, an additional corps from Quarterfinals will be allowed to compete in Semis. Quote
Danpod Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 Scores are coming in smoothly. Velvet Knights were the first corps to hold serve tonight, meaning they weren't passed by the very next performing corps. 2COOLVK =) Quote
Danpod Posted August 5, 2008 Author Posted August 5, 2008 Velvet Knights hold serve again, this time against the Spartans. The Spartans were the DCI Division II World Champions just last year. Our good friend Alan Irons marched with the Spartans, once upon a time. Quote
treblemaker Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 I once saw a video of the VK Drum Majors at retreat. And I'm probably really lame because everyone has probably already seen it. But I thought it was really bada** and every time I see their name I think of that. Okay my rant is done. Quote

The folding chair salute and the cooler full of beverages is a legendary Drum Corps moment. Quote

Danpod Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 Revolution's score is up. Nice distance between the Raiders. We'll see how it holds up. Quote
treblemaker Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 (edited) I'm kind of new to this and this is probably a stupid question but how much do scores/placings change between Quarters, Semis, and Finals? I mean is there much wiggle room? Edited August 6, 2008 by lhsfluter Quote

I mean is there much wiggle room? For the most part, scores will increase at each event. As the number of corps are reduced during the weekend, you'll see that the scores for the bottom-tiered corps drop slightly because they don't have very many corps below them. Placings can change during World Championships. Nothing is really set in stone. The shows are so fine tuned now that execution is key to leap-frogging over another corps. It can be done. You just really have to be on fire to make substantial movement. Here's an example: Boston Crusaders 2002: DCI Quarterfinals - 8th Place DCI Semifinals - 6th Place DCI Finals - Tie for 5th Place Quote
Danpod Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 Revolution overtaken by the Citations by a good margin. The worst Revolution can finish is 8th place. Nice job, Revo! Quote
Danpod Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 Scores are completed. Blue Devils B has a comfortable lead. Revolution is in 8th place. The top 17 from tonight, not including Beatrix, will advance to Semis. Congratulations to all! Quote
treblemaker Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 If Blue Devil B win Open and the Blue Devils win World would that be the first time that has happened? Quote

b_sax_agent Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 speaking of VK, I saw their "Trip Around the World" or whatever the title of that show was. Funniest show ever. Quote
Danpod Posted August 6, 2008 Author Posted August 6, 2008 In case you were wondering, this show used a nine judge panel, which means two percussion judges were present. Quick recap on how Revolution did: Music - 6th Place Visual - 11th Place General Effect - 8th Place Although Visual was their "weak" caption, they were slammed in Visual General Effect (14th Place). To give you an idea of how widespread the captions were, the Citations (7th place overall) actually received 1st place in Colorguard Achievement. Quote
