Y'all played Marcus last night. Did they march a portion of their competition show or did they just do a crowd/spirit show?

We (Grapevine) played a spirit type show, while Marcus mached their first movement and then micro-drilled their third movement. I don't know why they skipped the second movement though.

Lol.

All I know is LD Bell is going to be unstoppable by the end of the season with the show they are putting out on the field.

It is fierce.. and as usual it will only get better.

also explains why he would never let summit do BOA I suppose.

That's really unfortunate.

I'm not going to single the guy out, this is just in general to some directors, but it kind of irks me when some of them refuse to take their kids to a certain contest because of their own personal agenda.

Okay, don't like the judging system? No problem. You don't have to participate.

Take them to the contest as spectators so THEY can enjoy the experience and watch some upper echelon bands. It's not only a moral booster, but it strives them to be better.

That's how I see it.

haha i guess you can look at it that way.

But I mean some bands just have traditions of not really being a "BOA" band.

And i;m not going to get into it.

BOA is tight.

We are just not a band that would do well at BOA, we're geared towards a more UIL oriented program

Which is just fine. I think what he meant was that you guys should at least get to EXPERIENCE BOA a little, even if it means from the stands. Just because you watch it doesn't mean you become a "BOA Band."

yeah i completely understand.

but i think that would be more of a distraction than anything on a state year. lol

uil is looking for execution and such.

not what boa is looking for.

maybe on a non state year sure

Hm.

Well in BOA you get points taken away from a visual score if people don't match as well with marching technique. UIL I don't really think that's a biig thing they look at. I could be wrong..

BOA judges harder, if you ask me.

Then again, it depends on what kind of show you have, too.

I have seen it go many ways.

Sometimes, BOA shows don't do so well at UIL competitions, while UIL shows don't do very well at BOA.

I totally agree. We haven't been to BOA in over 10 years...We like Mansfield Summit are not a BOA band due to the fact that our directors want to focus on marching and execution before visuals and props and such...I am undecided on whether watching BOA would help or not due to the focus of the band being distracted from what we have to do in our show.

How do you explain LD Bell?

They rarely use props.

The props and visuals argument is weak. An argument that's even weaker is the "They Beat Us Because They Had Props" argument. If I had a quarter for every time I've heard that excuse, I'd have a giant pile of quarters. Arcade, anyone??

If you think it's all about visuals and props, go check out the Grand National Finals caption awards. A Texas band has won the Music Caption at Grand Nationals for the past five years straight.

Speaking from experience props + BOA does not always = good placement.

My freshman year we thought we would try to be a "prop" band and have this "themed"(If you could call it that) show and we failed miserably.

You don't have to have props to win and having props does not make you win.

yeah i agree.

and im definitely not trying to make an argument about props.

I was just saying we're not a BOA band. Our show is designed to do well at UIL.

I'm sure if we were going to compete at BOA or even BOA and UIL we would have to alter our show a little bit.

idk, I think i'll just switch Berkner and Coppell for that 2nd spot. Coppell is good but i'm not ranking them over haltom

I don't know....I'm expecting Coppell to be a lot cleaner than Haltom this early in the season. It will be closer than a Haltom/Berkner show down I think. I'm saying this, of course, without seeing any of these shows.
