Cgrad01 Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 Does anyone know a tentatvie lineup of who will be at the Mesquite Marching Festival this year? It is coming up within the next 4 weeks, but I have had no luck pulling up a schedule yet. Quote
Xenon Posted September 9, 2008 Posted September 9, 2008 All I know is that it is on October 4th and that Duncanville will be attending. Quote
Donezo Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Coppell and Allen are attending as well. Good luck finding seats and parking! Quote
the terminator Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 this is just one round w/ no prelims-finals, right? Quote
Cgrad01 Posted September 10, 2008 Author Posted September 10, 2008 (edited) the terminator said: this is just one round w/ no prelims-finals, right? Yes, that is true. All of the bands are given a Rating similar to UIL standards. Also, all of the bands are scored and ranked, regardless of classification. In addition, each classification has an award for best horn line, color guard, drum line and best in class. The overall contest awards go to Best Performer and best drum major. Of all the contests in DFW, I think the MMF and Plano East are my favorites. I do like how the Plano East competition brings back the Top 10 for a Finals showdown. Danpod Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I don't mind having just one performance for the contest, as long as the list of competitors is relatively small. Quote

sax5warrior Posted September 23, 2008 Posted September 23, 2008 Why is this on the predictions list? Quote
trumpetchick0607 Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 I'm excited about this contest, it's our first of the season, and there are alot of great bands going to be there, and alot of not-so-great.... i wont mention any names.. but im stoked! Quote
Donezo Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 It would probably help those of you who are doing predictions to know that MISD (Mesquite, North Mesquite, West Mesquite, Poteet, Horn) schools aren't actually eligible for any awards. I think they do get ranked though? I'm not sure exactly how it works since they aren't technically competing. Quote
Xenon Posted September 25, 2008 Posted September 25, 2008 Duncanville has pulled out of this contest due to not receiving workable closer drill from Youngblood. (Combination of Youngblood's knee problems and not keeping Youngblood up to date with the latest MIDI file) Quote
Cgrad01 Posted September 26, 2008 Author Posted September 26, 2008 In past years, all bands are ranked at the end of the competition. MISD schools are ranked with all competing bands, but they are not eligible for any awards. Quote
crazyjakeup Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 man, i was hoping sachse would be at this contest just so i could see how rowlett does agaisnt them... and now duncanville is out.*tear* Quote
Cgrad01 Posted September 30, 2008 Author Posted September 30, 2008 (edited) This will be interesting to see how the bands rank at this competition. I wish Duncanville had not dropped out. Coppell won this competition last year, but in my opinion....their show this year is not very exciting to watch. Edited September 30, 2008 by Cgrad01 Quote

Since when does whether or a show is interesting or not determine the most successful group at this contest? It's always been about pure precision. Specifically concerning Coppell: 1) That's a negative comment that I'm sure no one from Coppell or even many people on these forums appreciate. 2) It's not even October, and they have their entire show on the field. Obviously, they haven't had time to get it up to the full tempo, so energy will no doubt come from a more fast-paced performance. 3) They have a GE caption award from a contest attended by several competitive BOA bands that disagrees with you. Please be careful before you post opinions online, as they can be inflammatory or misinterpreted. Sometimes it's best to either explain your reasoning fully or withhold the comment. Cgrad01 Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 Obviously what I said upset you, so I am sorry you took it personal. However, this is a forum for people to come and post their opinions and comments. Take a look around the forum, there are plenty of opinions on here and you cannot get upset over every little thing that someone says that you do not agree with. I was simply saying that I do not find the show exciting Quote
takigan Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I agree with Cgrad....saying their show is not exciting is different from saying the band is not very good or the band is lazy or "they're rich, no wonder they did well". It's not something that you can really "fix" so I doubt anyone from that school would take it personally. And also I don't think an unexciting show is destined to not do well....plus "exciting" is purely subjective, judging scores in the past demonstrate this. Quote
titancoaster Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 I think Coppell will do very well here, the only thing I dont like about their show (keep in mind I have only seen the poor quality You Tube video) is their drill writer keeps them way to tight it seems as though they only take up less than half the field and for a band as big and as white as they are it does get kind of boring to watch, but I LOVE the planets. ^(uniforms) Quote
Steeldrum Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Coppell is playing first in the morning at Mesquite so they can participate in the BOA contest later that day. So I have a question for the group. Can judges who see a 5A band first thing in the morning, followed by smaller bands during the day, judge that band fairly with the other 5A bands that will perform at the end at the contest? Personally I think that will be hard for judges to do as they tend to compare bands to the previous bands in front of them or at least to the group of bands they're performing with. By the time they get to the evening 5A block the morning performance will be a distant memory. Thoughts? Quote
the terminator Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 idk maybe coppell will set the standard for all the following bands, and they better not disappoint b/c i have them 2nd Quote
titancoaster Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 agreed, one time we under went similar situation (USSBA Cen Tex Regional/Westlake) and our judges put on our tapes to ignore our scores becuase theu would not be accurate compared to our class since we went hours before anybody else Quote
