Danpod Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 I remember when I first saw that tribute several years ago. I cried profusely about half way through. Music tends to have that kind of affect on a person. I was a Junior in High School when these attacks went down. Needless to say, confusion was the buzzword of the morning. Students were getting conflicting information from different people, which added to the confusion and inevitable fear that would set it later in the day. Some teachers stopped teaching for a day and flipped on the television to watch the events unfold. Other teachers, such as my 1st Period English teacher, refused to tell us what was going on and decided to go on with the day as planned. The halls in between periods were the loudest that I have ever heard of them. It seemed like no matter how you took the news, you were talking about it with your friends. I arrived at 3rd Period Wind Ensemble at about 12:20 and when I did, the events of the day hit me like a ton of bricks. Why? Well, we sat down in our chairs with our instruments when our director stepped onto the podium. He told us to go ahead and take the class period to catch up on homework or practice All-State music. We rarely had days like that, especially during marching season. Those who didn't know exactly what was going on knew it was something bad at that point. I was in one of the practice rooms going over All-State music when I heard our Principal ask for the student body's attention. The band hall was dead silent. All practice rooms were vacated at that point. The Principal told us that our Country was under attack and that the structural integrity of both the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center had been compromised. The Principal concluded his announcement by saying that all extra curricular activities were cancelled for the day. We were all in a state of shock. Little did we know that the most confusion would come just after school let out. The 20 or 30 minutes after school lets out is chaos in a band hall in the State of Texas. People need to change clothes. People need to find reeds and instruments. People need to make out with their significant other because they haven't seen each other for eight minutes. My friends and I tried to go about this day the normal way. As usual, we went to the band hall after school. However, when we arrived, we noticed that the room didn't have the same hustle and bustle like it always did. People were standing around, unsure of what to do. Shouldn't we be practicing? Shouldn't we be outside? They told us that our practice was cancelled after school. Why the heck are we still here? It's funny how an event like the one that happened seven years ago can literally affect everyone. We were suddenly thrown into this brief freedom from standing outside in 95 degree weather and yet, we really couldn't enjoy it because of what happened earlier in the day. I will never forget what happened that day, from the practice that wasn't, to the lives that were lost. If I have any advice to give all you folks reading this, it is to enjoy your time today. Go hug your parents. Spend time with your friends. Enjoy being around the people you love and make sure they know how you feel. Days like September 11th force us to put things in perspective. We must always remember to keep perspective on what is important in our lives. Remember today. Never forget. Go out and enjoy your life. Quote
