Yeah, I played clarinet forever and decided a few months ago to pick up a brass instrument. Well, I had a trumpet available to me and so I started trying to play it. It was really frustrating for a while, but 45 minutes a day (in 3 sessions) for a few weeks and I was doing pretty well. Now, I've never had any brass instruction, so I'm pretty sure that I'm probably doing things wrong (too much compression or something) and have some bad habits, so I hit a brick wall after being able to get up to the C in the staff. It's been kinda slow going from there as far as going higher is concerned, but with continued practice I've gotten a lot better at being able to be accurate within my range and can (with some trouble) get up to the D# in the staff. But one thing that I've learned is that (at least in the beginning) you can't skip a single day of practicing. If you do, you regress. It is a lot more harsh in that regard than a woodwind instrument is. Quote
TptMartin Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 Well... This is a good warm up but also a good starting base for Trumpet playing I would say. Start by only buzzing on the mouthpiece. Now for your Embouchure, there are several different things for begginers. You could say the word, "Aim" Then tighten the corners and blow air into center of mouthpiece like you would a reed. But with a trumpet the center is more relaxed and the corners are tight unlike the clarinet. To buzz without forming bad habits, Buzz with your Index and thumb holding the very end of the mouthpiece without pressing into your lips. Thats pretty much all I think you need. If you need any other help or have any questions just ask. Quote
