bluebellbrass07 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 WOW! I just saw L.D. Bell at the show. I was completely blown away, music for prague might be one of the greatest moments to ever happen on a football field Quote

Skippy Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 I've only seen the video of BOA Houston for Bell, I am dying to see Music for Prague live. I can't even see what's going on on my computer screen, and it makes my jaw drop. Quote
b_sax_agent Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 That was probably the best Bell show I've ever seen. There was only one thing I didn't like, but I'm not going to say what it was; It might cause a commtion Quote

So, let me take a few guesses at what you didn't like. The mic'd woodwinds in the pit helping the on-field woodwinds? or the immense amount of standing while playing? Quote

The tubas that sat down for a third of the show. But that is sort of a minor thing. It was a better show than the previous two years in my opinion. Quote

bluebellbrass07 Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 I don't even care, the show reached me immensely on an emotional level, and as far as I'm concerned, thats what its all about Quote

In response to this review that proclaims without basis of knowledge that Bell is stationary too long... here are the facts: There are 300 performers on the field, there are 9 minuets and 45 seconds of production to be presented, and there are 130 sets... with 2 minutes still to go. It would seem to me that a group standing still in a show of this length would not be able to present this quantity of visual product. Further and more importantly, lets discuss the split focus and textural variety that is being presented by all elements of this 300 member organization at any given minute of this epic production. I have one response... ridiculous. My review is that this is one of the best crafted and soon to be best performed productions to ever grace a football field. Quote
Xenon Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 Did you not read my review on TxBLive? I raved about how much I liked the show. Those were my only complaints. But YES, they STOOD while playing for EXTREMELY long amounts of time MULTIPLE times. The woodwind features were standstill (and kneeling). The trumpet feature was standstill for a LONG time. The Prague section was standstill for a LONG time. But you know what I said in the review? That for me, the playing made up for it such that I personally didn't really care about the standing. But judges are not me, and judges have to judge on criteria, and one thing judges look for is Simultaneous Responsibility which means marching and playing at the same time. Which, Bell did do, but the standing stood out as well. Quote
takigan Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Hafta agree with Mr. Xenon.....and really it's the same story as last year. Bell just doesn't like to move around a lot.....what excused them from a lot of the criticism last year is that they had a sheer amount of actual content to learn over the course of the season (a good 14-15 minutes when you consider all the different endings....nearly 2 show's worth). I wouldn't make a judgement call on the show yet, however.....considering the show is as clean as it is at this point both musically and visually, even for them, maybe the staff decided to be more thorough in the early season this year and thus, the show is still more in its framework stages from a design perspective. 2 weeks till the dome and another week until Nationals, as we get into the end-season their show could still take on a radically different form.
