But in a situation like BOA with field judges and individual music performance scores, that could seriously hurt the band if only half of them play. I'm sure the judge walking around would ask questions as to why every other trumpet is playing.

That's the truth. There's no way you could pull off having half of the band play when a judge is walking around listening to each player...unless you had them in horns down position or something

Aces?

Edit: Ace in the hole?

Haha no.

Just our special word for alternates.

March at football games, but not competitions.

And they fill in after we know who fails, if anybody fails.

Once again, I would like to point out that band size does not determine the level of success you can achieve. Go ask Jackson Academy and Tarpon Springs if a large band size is crucial to success.

although, a band with more members can have more shadows. I know one thing that always hurt us was kids who failed and not having enough shadows to replace them. A larger band wouldn't have those problems...

Sure they would. A 200 member band is just as likely to have 10 people fail as a 100 member band is to have 5 people fail.

this is true. But a smaller band may have to use more of their people and not have as many "spares" to plug into empty holes, as say a larger band with 30 people on JV.

After watching BOA Houston this past weekend I would like to add Hidalgo to that list of "small" bands that succeed very nicely.
