Actually, there will be an area executive board meeting to determine Coppell's fate. Duncaville's director stepped in to aid the student. Coppell had a band parent running the sound board, which is explicitly against the rules. If they aren't disqualified then they will at least receive a reprimand from UIL.

Coppell did not have a band parent run the sound board. It is one of the directors who is in charge of the sound board.

Yes, it was the 1st assistant director, but that is neither here nor there as the only thing that matters is that it wasn't a student. The question is whether or not he was fixing the problem or running the board.

I talked to a reliable source and heard that Dick Floyd made the executive decision, but it is possible that that decision is just pending the executive board meeting Donezo talked about.

Well if Floyd gave the ok then the meeting will probably be irrelevant. This is just the most recent news I've heard (as of like an hour ago.)

Basically, one of the contest workers in the stands text messaged the press box that there was an adult operating Coppell's sound board. Someone in the press box then radio'd down to a contest official on the field to go check it out. Said official ran over to the sound board and gave the press box a play-by-play of what the man was doing to the sound board. As far as I know, it's pretty much been determined that he was not helping a student (and even if he was that still shouldn't be allowed, but apparently Floyd has given Duncanville the ok........) The meeting is to determine what, if any, disciplinary action will be taken.

Alright Coppell :D congrats to everyone else. There was defiantly an awkward silence when Rowlett was announced alternate. But I'm curious, why were people opting us the odd man out. It seems that people haven't seen everyone else's show and just going off he said/she said. I don't know just an observation.

Coppell didn't really have the cleanest show up until Area. Also, most predictions had Coppell third.

just wondering when's the last time an alternate band got to take place of a band that made state?

i think americas high school got DQed for marching an eneligible guard member and bel air HS came in 2 years ago...(could use some help with this one... ;) )

but according to section 27 of the "uil rule book":

"©Disqualified Team Does Not Have to Be Replaced. The State Executive

Committee has the option not to replace a team that is disqualified from the

playoffs at or near the certification date for district representatives."

Americas pulled themselves out in 2006, they didn't even wait for the news to break that they had an ineligible student. They did the honorable thing.

If you are a band student, a band parent, a band director, or a supporter of any band, you should not spread rumors or comments about the soundboard issue. It sounds like sour grapes coming from you. Please refrain from speculation that is hurtful or harmful. Reputations are easily destroyed but difficult to build. If the UIL wishes to comment on the issue, let the statement come from them.

coming from coppell, im going to have to say that it's going to be really tough for us to make state this year.

bands like duncanville, sachse, berkner, and rowlett are great bands (if i forgot any, im sorry, but those are the ones that came off the top of my head), and i think it'll turn out to be a great match-up, and we'll see who makes it to state.

as of now though, i really cant give any predictions, because as i said, there are those great bands that i mentioned earlier, and it's going to be tough.

i'm glad that we got first place! i really didn't even think we would make top 2! :D

So.......Americas did the honorable thing.

The question is not whether or not it happened. We have a contest official that observed....so the question then becomes did they violate the intent of the rule. Simply ask the director in question. Was he/she operating the board or fixing the problem for the rest of the performance. Coppell is respected so we have to trust that they would do the honorable thing. They as educators know the message they will send to their students, community and the music community across the state. If they say they didn't violate the intent of the rule then we have to trust their integrity. If they say "let the UIL figure it out" as one poster suggests....well maybe that answers the question.

In a post on Txblive about the New Braunfels band's performance (Area D I think) in the pre-lims a comment was made that the gain was too high on the board which created an issue that was irritating enough it warranted a comment. So....would this be a problem that a director could have stepped in and run the board? Would it have made a difference in placement? The only reason I say this is to show there is no easy answer to this. Maybe make the rule so that only a student can touch the board after the performance starts.

The facts are the judges voted Coppell to advance to the state competition. Their onfield performace speaks for itself and their student musicians performed at a very high level. Isn't that what this competition is supposed to be about. They will represent Area C well.

So question,

where do you find the offical results at on the UIL page?

i tried googling but it didn't work.

FYI.....

(4) Electronic Equipment. Electronic equipment may be used under the following

provisions:

performed live and in real time by eligible students.

B. Pre-recorded music, instrumental or vocal, may not be used.

C. The placement of electronic units must comply with the 5-minute set up and 2-

minute tear down limitations.

(5) Amplification of instruments or voice may be used with the following restriction:

A. All equipment, such as mixers, sound boards, etc. must be operated by eligible

students.

B. AC power cords and AC supplied amplification units must be located outside

the sidelines and endlines.

C. The placement of amplification units must comply with the five-minute set up

and 2-minute tear down limitations.

(6) Violations will be subject to penalties in accordance with Section 27 and Section 29.

(7) Judges will be expected to address the appropriateness and frequency of use of

electronics and amplification as a part of the adjudication process.

(8) Local Ground Rules. Failure to comply with local ground rules and regulations

outlined by and/or approved by the region executive committee may be cause for

disqualification or other penalties as listed in Subchapter R. Such rules must be sent

to all participating schools at least 14 days prior to the contest date.

It's funny rules get bent when the level of competition gets higher.

1. Coppell

2. Duncanville

3. Berkner

Alternate: Rowlett

Congratulations to these fine organizations.

Coming from Rowlett, I have to say it was an extremely hard competition,

we all worked very hard and obviously there were a lot of

fluctuations from Pre-lims to Finals.

It was a major upset to my band, however, I wish the

greatest luck to the bands who are advancing.

I feel really bad for Rowlett. I was there for prelims and finals and in my opinion their prelims was stronger than their finals performance but it was definately top 3. You guys are a classy organization. You should be very proud of your performances. With the panel they had assembled it does not surprise me how strange things turned out. My personal favorite was duncanville. Musically I thought there was no question; their finals performance had myself and everyone around me speechless. They do need to clean up their marching. I have seen all of the "top" groups and duncanville's drill and tempos are extremely challenging. Good luck to all the bands at state!
