Trumpet Master Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 The UIL Area G Marching Contest will take place at the Alamodome in San Antonio on October 25, 2008. Please discuss any Area G shows in here and once the line is released it will be posted here. Quote
rpd Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Can't wait. I've never done a production in the Alamodome, just "Fun shows". We've made finals the last two times, but haven't been able to make it past tenth each time. Im glad its closer to home this year. I loved going to visit McAllen after living there for three years. But after BOA Arlington, I don't want to do any more performances with 3 hours of sleep. Quote
Salas Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I got to see John B. Alexander from Laredo this past Saturday. IF they can clean everything up, they might have a shot at Area Finals. Quote

Xenon Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Here are the schedules for Area G: 3A: http://www.region15band.com/wp-content/upl...a_marching1.pdf 5A: http://www.region15band.com/wp-content/upl..._g_marching.pdf Quote
rpd Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 ^Hah, when I first read the schedule, I thought there were 41 bands performing because there were 41 slots. I was like 'OMG there's going to be 8 going to State?" But then I realized 4 slots were breaks. Should be a loooong day. Quote
Trumpet Master Posted October 20, 2008 Author Posted October 20, 2008 Well I will be at this event for most, if not all of the day. Is anyone else planning to attend the First Massacre @ The Alamo(dome) this season? Quote

horn_r1 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 I should be there for the 2nd half of prelims and maybe finals depending on who advances. This is going to be one heck of a long contest. One of the longest in the state's history maybe? At least for a one-day competition I would think. 47 performances in a single day is a lot! Does anyone know who the judges are going to be? Quote
just_a_texas_girl Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Has anyone seen any of the Brownsville Schools? Are they strong and state contenders? Had some interaction with some of the kids in that district a few years back and the programs were growing, but have not heard much since...anyone?? Quote
horn_r1 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Hanna and Lopez are the two big contenders from the Brownsville area. Rivera's program is on the rise as well from what I hear. My favorites to make finals are (in no particular order): Hanna Lopez Harlingen Harlingen South Edinburg Edinburg North Rio Grande City Taft O'Connor United but I could easily see Donna, Alexander, or Sharyland making the cut so we'll see how things turn out. Finals are a total toss-up with this mix of bands. Quote
rydern Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 I hear John Jay is on the rise, what do you guys think? They're doing Canon by Key Poulan. Quote
Trumpet Master Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 The contest seems to be a real toss up this year. I have seen quite a few of the bands that I think have a shot at finals but they were all pretty much on the same level. It is going to come down to whoever shows up and has a better show during prelims. Based off of what I have seen, here is my finals predictions (in no particular order): United Edinburg Harlingen Hanna Donna Sharyland Lopez Rio Grande City Edinburg North or O'Conner Pace or Harlingen South or Clark This contest will be interesting to say the least. See everyone there, I will try to be on the 50 under the press box. Quote

They are, but I don't think there quite ready for finals yet. I enjoyed there music, but I only saw them waiting to go on at the East Central Contest. Our football team hasn't played each other yet. Also, my good friends father is the new director there. (or I may be thinking of Warren) Really, all NISD schools is on the rise in my opinion. I won't add my predictions, because I will be competing in the competition. But I do feel very good about our band, even after our BOA debacle. Quote
Salas Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 I have my predictions, but I will not list them here. If you care to know them, feel free to PM me. Quote
blahaha Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 I wonder if performance order in prelims will have as much of an affect this year as it did in '06. I keep seeing United on people's lists, but I can't see them overcoming their 2nd slot in prelims. Quote

Especially in a really long contest like 5A Area G (every time, not just this time around), performance order really does matter quite a bit. Take the '06 contest for example. Some of the bands that performed early in the morning ended up placing say 11-20, but had consistently outscored some of the finals bands all season long until that day. Quote
bobcat98_05 Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Keep an eye on C.C. Winn HS from Eagle Pass. Great show. Quote
Salas Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 (edited) It's going to be a long day. Edited October 24, 2008 by Salas Quote
xraidercutiex Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 Sharyland - i know they'll pull ahead after the upset from 2006. SA Taft - not just because it's my alma mater but because the show is pretty cool and pretty clean. Harlingen - always a great band! i'm never disappointed when i see these guys Harlingen South - same as Harlingen Donna - consistent area finalists & they sound well overall Hannah - i like the sound of the show Edinburg North - Christmas show is unusual but I hear it's been working out for them Quote

Salas Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 The following bands advanced to Finals (in performance order): Harlingen Lopez PSJA North Harlingen South O'Connor Hanna Donna Pace John Jay Edinburg I believe these rankings from prelims: 1. Harlingen 2. Hanna 3. Donna 4. Lopez 5. O'Connor 6.PSJA North 7.Pace 8.Edinburg 9.John Jay 10. Harlingen South Quote
rpd Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Well, looks like John Jay did something right since I last saw them. They made finals. Disappointing night for us. We were in shock when we found out what we got. SA Taft who was sitting right by us had the same look on there faces when they found out they didn't make it. Quote

I knew Jay had a chance as soon as they finished performing. I was in the director's room when the results were given out. It was a shocking night for most of us. Quote
