We were in shock when we found out what we got. SA Taft who was sitting right by us had the same look on there faces when they found out they didn't make it. I am still in complete shock...I mean AHHH, but good luck to everyone! Quote

It was a shocking night for most of us. It was just surprising to us because of the two previous times we saw them, and beat them as well. But props to them for doing something right. I still shook some of there hands after the results were given out. Edited October 26, 2008 by rpd Quote

We were very successful in the 80's and 90's, then O'Connor opened up. And I don't think our current director knew how to handle the change. Hopefully bands like Reagan doesn't do the same, I really enjoy there shows. Quote

Did anyone see them perform? Well, I did see both of them and from what I saw, their drill is what "killed" them. The musical aspects of both Sharyland and Rio Grande City were pretty decent. For Rio, they really didn't have to much woodwind exposure, but boy can they really play. I had both of these bands making finals but it was a definite shock to not see them there. Congrats to everyone who competed yesterday, it was a long day. On another note, carrying sound equipment and then running up top to watch the show sucks. How come they didn't have the director's area roped off like at BOA or UIL state? Quote

Rio Grande City missed finals by one point. Harlingen South had a 70 and Rio Grande City had a 71. I also had Rio Grande City in finals. After seeing Sharyland, I knew they weren't going to advance. rydern Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 Phew, yesterday was a long one! Thanks for the congrats from all of you and congrats to those who performed! We were all in shock at the results. We didn't make the State cut but Finals was a gigantic step forward for us and we are so proud. Does anyone know how they decided the order of performance for finals? We went at 9:30am and then 11:00pm. I would think that they would move us up for finals. Signed, Ryder N. Definitely a competition I would like to forget. Quote
epic_phale Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 yeah taft...what happened there? its not a rhetorical question, i didnt go. i heard they were definite finals quality. interesting you say echo, im sure most members of most bands have performed with an echo, but you never know. im grateful I made it to state when I was high school, its one of those moments that sticks with you... It really all depends on the mind set of the band. If they use there ears to much, the echo will throw you off. But if you find time through the drum major or the drum line when there isn't a DM to be seen, you should do fine. Mr. Mitchoka (not sure if that's how it's spelled), the fine arts director of NISD, said that the echo threw Taft off almost from the very beginning. Does the individual judging prelim ranking come out? Quote
epic_phale Posted October 27, 2008 Posted October 27, 2008 jay made it, wow, haha thats cool. no offense, but when I was in high school i never would have seen jay making it any time soon, good on them for proving me wrong. lol the wolfman...or whatever it is he was called. i remember the 'drama' he brought about between bands when my band and I went to state. anyway, I graduated some years ago, and I have nothing against Mr. Mitchoka (yeah spelling?) , its all major lulz to me, but I would take everything he says with a grain of salt. i remember now, I heard on the night that props in the wrong places messed up taft. sounds like excuses to me, but in any case, thats a shame. Trumpet Master Posted October 27, 2008 Author Posted October 27, 2008 Most of the top bands at the contest muffled their drums for the dome. It also helps to focus on the DMs instead of listening. Quote
