I think in two weeks we're moving it to after school from 4:30-6:30 with the exception being game days. Then on competition days we generally have a one-hour practice before we get ready and load the buses. Quote

takigan Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 When I was in High School we rehearsed 4-6pm on Mondays and 4-5:30pm on Wednesdays and that was it. We made it to the 5A State Marching Band contest on that schedule. Nowadays Georgetown rehearses 7am-8:30am Monday-Thursday plus a mini-rehearsal on game days....I'd say the band is better now than they were then but Area D has gotten more competitive in recent years. My university band rehearses much less than the High Schools (as most university bands do). 7 hours a week total, Mondays 6-9pm and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4pm-6pm.....no sectionals either. Monday: Off Tuesday: 4:30-7:00 Wensday: 4:30-6:30 Thursday: 4:30-7:00 Friday: Run through of entire half time show, then the game. If the game is on a Saturday Monday: Off Tuesday: 4:30-700 Wensday: 4:30-6:30 Thursday: Off Friday: 4:30-7:00 Saturday: Run through of entire half time show, then game. Although lately with competitions going on, we've have been subbing one of the rehearsals for a Saturday morning rehearsal. Quote

Fata1 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 We have a first period band class each morning so we go from 7:30am to 8:30am before school and continues until 9:15am during first period. Then, after school, we have rehearsal from 4pm to 5:30pm on Mondays and on days before a game. Then, on game days, we rehearse before the game for the extra hour permitted by the eight hour rule for game/contest days. We also rehearse occasionally on days that we don't have school like this passed Monday to make up for lost time on that day. Quote

Are there any schools out there that utilize the block scheduling so that band meets everyday for an hour and a half in addition to extracirricular rehearsal outside the school day? Quote

In total, we get about three hours and fort-five minutes of in-school rehearsal a week. Still, that's only half of what a band that met for an hour and a half every day would get. Most schools in block schedule that I know of do this. Block scheduling means that you don't meet every day and half the time that means only playing twice a week. Meeting that few of times is really hard for cleaning things up. Not to mention that a lot of people don't get much out of music rehearsals longer than an hour due to lips getting tired. The problem with Double Blocking is that it makes it harder for students to be in band because it takes 1/4th of the available periods but the students still have to meet graduation requirements and possibly have other extracurricular activities. Before this year, Duncanville had the top two bands double blocked (and suggested for the next two bands) to help out with the twice a week problem. This year, Duncanville HS changed to a Modified Block schedule where they have two 45 minute periods that meet every day and 3 A/B blocked 1.5 hour periods. This way, band can be one of those 45 minute periods and doesn't have to be double blocked. That would be insane. I should note here that when double blocked, 1.5 hours/day = 7.5 hours per week. According to UIL rules, you can only have in-school marching band rehearsal for a maximum of 5 hours per week. The other 2.5 hours need to be used for something else. Edit to add: LD Bell is on a Trimester system with one 70 minute period and four 74 minute periods that meet every day. This is another way to help get around extracurricular activities taking up too many of the available periods. Quote

I mean I know you rehearse during your class period, but is your whole band during one period? And why do you start at 7? Anddd.. btw Leander does have an hour and a half everyday (for those kids who aren't every other day). I practice no less than 2 hours a day everyday (save sometimes on weekends) and usually get in about 2 and a half to three and a half hours of individual practice. This on top of 19 credit hours and 3 ensembles I'm not getting credit for. Such is the life of a music major Quote

And yeah, our whole band is one period. We start at 7 cause of football/volleyball/cross country people. Quote

I'm pretty sure you're not the only one feeling this way. I would seriously talk to some of the other band kids and see if you can have a meeting with your director. I know this sounds silly but if you have a few people who feel the same way, your director is more likely to listen to you. It's also weird to say that you want to have more practice time :]. The guard's schedule was different... they usually did: Mon: 6:30-8. Tues: 4:30-6:30 Wed: Off Thurs: 4:30-6:30 And there was also double blocking. We weren't required to double block, but it was basically understood that if you wanted to be placed into a higher ensemble, you were double blocked, no questions asked. At UNT: MWF: 4:15-6:15 Game days, we meet 4 hours before the game starts to practice for an hour, then a parade, then pre-game starts. Edited October 21, 2008 by borchnork Quote
ftwdrummer Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Monday: Full band, 5-7:30 Tuesday: Woodwinds & Pit, 4:15-6:15 Wednesday: Brass & Battery, 4:15-6:15 Thursday: Full band, 5-7:30 Friday: Gameday run-through Saturday: 1 hour, 30 minute-2 hour rehearsal/run-through (using the extra "performance" hour and the 8th hour left over) It's pretty annoying, having the band split on Tuesday and Wednesday. I mean, it's good for learning drill, but when it comes to cleaning...it's a fair bit easier to clean forms when you aren't trying to clean brass holes in a woodwind rehearsal, and vice versa. (Then again, what do I care? I'm in pit. Separated rehearsals means a day we don't have to lug stuff out.) Quote
