takigan Posted October 25, 2008 Posted October 25, 2008 hmm, I'll play I guess.....though after watching the bands on this list and looking at your post history, I can't help but think there's a certain band you're trying to promote by involving people in this. Anyway, let's play...... Bel Air: Music: balance is there, but not really that intense or contrasting. Electronics don't really compliment the music. Band's barely marching 120. Drumline book is ridiculously simple. Music sounds ok, but too withheld for being that easy. Visual: Drill is really simple....spacing isn't that great for such simple drill. Marching in the second movement is pretty clean for the most part. Eastwood: Music: Kind of dead. Not really well balanced. Tears in some places when it kind of shouldn't. Lots of unnecessary individual mistakes. Pretty awesome hits in the middle of the show, though they're really unbalanced. It was close between them and Bel Air in both categories though I'd say Eastwood had a slight edge. Visual: Spacing is not quite as solid as Bel Air, though the drill is a little more complex. Tempi are quicker than Bel Air's though. I'll give Eastwood the edge on this because they went above and beyond, and they seem like they aren't relying as much on flash. For BOA I might give Bel Air the win for having a little more interesting show, but here at UIL, Eastwood straight up. Frankin: Music: Strong opener with solid sound. It's more exciting, and is delivered well despite the tougher drill, Trumpets stick out some. Ballad has pretty bad balance. What happened to that awesome balance that was so solid in the first? It went to pot starting in the middle of the show.....it sounds kind of bad actually. Seems like the drill in the second and third movements wasn't learned well enough to play confidently. Ended on a strong pretty solid final chord. Visual: They move well at fast tempos. Their drill is tougher than the others and doesn't have any cheap dancing, and they deliver it pretty well. It's a little dirtier than some of the others but the tougher music and tougher drill should make up for it some. Americas: Music: Strong, clean, exciting opening movement just like Franklin. Stays clean and intense through the middle of the show as well. Nice, clean drumline. Solid closer. Visual: Good weapon work in the guard. Lots of straight lines and the lines themselves stay pretty straight. Good spacing all-around. Clearly the best so far in both categories...... Hanks: Music: .....But this tops even that. Strong, clean opener with good balance. Good drumline. Well coordinated, stays together cleanly and solidly. A surprisingly good band, that has Statebound potential. Excellent finish. Visual: Fast opener (at least 160), complex drill that stays together pretty well. Yeah this band is the clear winner of this little contest....there isn't much more that I can say, they move well at high speed and it's exciting and the drill isn't a cakewalk either. Too bad their name isn't sassy.....I honestly don't think of a showstopping 5A band when I hear the name "Hanks". The Verdict: Band Music Marching Total Rank 1. Hanks 1 (860) 1 (870) 5 1 (4320) 2. Americas 2 (820) 2 (860) 10 2 (4180) 3. Eastwood 3 (750) 3 (810) 15 3 (3870) 4. Bel Air 4 (720) 4 (800) 20 4 (3760) 5. Franklin 5 (680) 5 (780) 25 5 (3600) ....I had a lot of trouble judging this. Especially with the placement of Eastwood and Bel Air. I mean some parts of Bel Air were really impressive, but Eastwood's show was very exciting and it cruised along at a good pace. It was just a more difficult show, though while not as clean, was presentable and solid all around. Quote
