I know it's hard to consider, but no love for Haltom anywhere? Certainly Bell & Marcus deserve the nod, but Haltom has a different show that just about anybody else. If we march it on Tues like we did at Region, we're a top 5 finish. I felt like our finals performance was somewhat less convincing, even tho we ended up 4th in finals. Go Buffs!

OMG Cedar Park!! PROPS TO YOU GUYS!!

Your band really amazed the Weslaco Panther Corp with your show! WE LOVED IT!...of course after we got over the fact we ended up dead last at the Westlake Marching Festival... I guess it was that all those big bands gave our band the jitter and we completely fell apart...

WELL I'M ROOTING FOR YOU GUYS GOOD LUCK!!

Getting a bit off-topic here, but I really liked Haltom's show back in '05. I thought the bird-like guard was pushing it a little, but the music you guys had from the Pines of Rome (and I think maybe Firebird Suite?) was awesome.

Oh, sorry about that, Marcus. It's been several years. Liked the french horns that year, though!

Sorry for the mix-up with Haltom. I tried to give you guys some praise. :P

I thought Haltom did a bird show as well.

Wasn't there '05 show La Nouba? I believe they won the Duncanville Marching Invatational in '05.

But yeah, as far as Haltom being a top five contender this year, well, im pretty sure half the directors from all the schools making state are telling their kids that, (including mine) and with reason. I think besides Bell Marcus and CP, the last two spots are fair game. Alot can change in a week. For alot of bands, their area performance will be the best one of the season, where as some bands are still adding onto their show, and their best performances are still to come. Basically every band feels their show is unique and different from anyone elses (not just haltom) and there are alot of programs that deserve more nods than they get.

You get those nods by doing good at state, not complaining about how noone is giving you them before hand.

No. The only other bird show that year was Owasso.

That's who it was. I knew there was another bird show.

Music Judge:

Greg Bimm - Marian Catholic HS, Illinois

Why is the UIL contest being a judged by a director who's spent his entire career conforming his bands to the BOA standard?

Just because he focuses on BOA doesn't mean that he can't totally grasp the concept of UIL...

The guy's old.....I'm sure he's seen enough in his time to know what he's supposed to do.....I just feel like his background with all the BOA competitions he's attended could subconsciously interfere with the aspects of the performance he's supposed to be looking for. I wonder how much time he's spent watching the brunt of Texas bands who are preparing their shows to be judged by the UIL standard compared to all the bands he's seen in the BOA circuit and the standards that they're pushing towards. I feel he's inclined to look for the things that BOA expects....even if he knows he's not supposed to.

I'm guessing UIL brings in the out-of-state talent to judge in order to avoid bias from their own directors.....but I think only the directors with lots of experience running their own bands through the UIL ringer really know how the system actually works. I do wonder why they chose exactly 1 Texas band director though.....maybe they're as aware as we are that the system is flawed and are running an experiment to try and fix it.

There just really aren't enough 4A directors right now with enough experience to judge state marching contest (and as much as I hate to say it, I think a lot of 5A directors would balk at the idea of being judged by 1A/2A folks.) Like I said earlier, Dickinson and Connally moving up to 5A really limits the Texas band director options. The only other director besides Greg Dick I can really think of is Scott Coulson and he judged the last three contests in a row....

I do think they should at least stick to former high school band directors if they can't get enough current ones. This is Greg Bimm's third state contest to judge this decade, so I think he probably has an idea of what's going on by now.

This state year looks to be one of the hardest 5A state years that has happened in a while...any thoughts from others on this and who will make finals?

I'm really glad that we get the opportunity to perform with such phenominal band programs...I'm very excited for Tuesday!

No offense to anyone at all...

...but I would LOVE to have Greg Bimm (and Alfred Watkins, for that matter) judge my show. They are two of the most highly respected band directors in the country. They both have won numerous GN titles, performed at BOA Concert Band Festival, Midwest, and tons of other things that surely "allows them" to judge in Texas.

Just my two cents.

I believe Greg Bimm judged state in 2003 for the 1A-2A-4A State Contest.
