Ha, thanks for the topic. Anyway, for competition, we're almost definitely going to be playing Mackey's Kingfishers Catch Fire and Hindemith's Symphony in Bb. We haven't decided on the march yet. I think we're going to try and play part of Symphony in Bb at our Christmas concert.

HOLY POO!!! SYMPHONY IN Bb!?!?!? That's intimidatingly hard.

SHSU's Wind Ensemble put on a concert last month (October 10th). We played:

"Wild Nights" by Frank Ticheli

"Scenes from the Louvre" by Norman Dello Joio

"Symphony for Band" by Morton Gould

"Were You There" by John Lynch

We're performing another concert on November 17th at United Heritage Baptist Church in Huntsville. For that concert we're doing:

"Fantastic Spirites" by Donald Grantham

"Symphony for Band" by Morton Gould

*some Gabrieli Brass Fanfare which will be awesome because it's Gabrieli -_- *

*a Mozart Transcription that's being put together by some graduate conductor*

There're a couple other pieces in our our rep that might make it into the concert program come Tuesday as well including; the "Chorale and Alleluia" by Howard Hanson, "Were You There" (again), and a Brass Trio with Concert Band featuring 3 of our Brass Faculty: Randy Adams (Trumpet), Allen Barnhill (Principal Trombone - Houston Symphony) and Robert Daniel (Principal Tuba - U.S. Air Force Band *retired*).

This year Sam Houston is one of the invited performing ensembles for the TMEA convention this coming February **excited!!! **, so we're building a core repertoire based off of our TMEA program that we'll be playing at various performances until TMEA, plus an extended repertoire that we pepper in to round out said performances. The "likely program" for the convention includes The 'Gould', the 'Lynch', the 'Gabrieli' and the Brass Trio along with another piece (probably either the 'Hanson' or the 'Grantham') that hasn't been announced yet. Disclaimer: "Likely Program" is subject to change w/out notice. So if you're going to be at the TMEA convention this Spring, either for All-State or just to hang out; if you can get it into your schedule come check us out!

Symphonic Movement by Vaclav Nelhybe

So far that's all I know of, and that's not even set in stone. However we were given the music for one period and listened to a recording. I like it.

We played that in my freshman year. I love that piece.

Haha, I love the piece but I really wish we weren't playing it. The horn part is so unbelievably high throughout parts of the piece. I'm going to die.

Yeah, it's like 32 high C's in one movement or something like that. I'd have to have a 1st chair all-state horn player to be playing something like that, I wouldn't want to mess up my kids' face for the sake of some cool music.

Yeah, I talked to my director about it. He's still deciding between Kingfishers and another piece. If we do the other piece, that's fine. If we do Kingfishers, I'll just work like crazy to get my range to where it needs to be. In the long run, it can only help me. I've wanted to get my range higher for a long time and now something will push me to do it. I trust my director to make the right choice so if he thinks I can do it, then I can. It'll just be a lot of work.

No, there's definitely a chance of something like that hurting you. Coming from a guy who's a 3rd year music student at UNT that still can't play high... every all-region etude or piece of music or drum corps mellophone parts that went high only made me worse. The stuff was beyond my ability at the moment, but I didn't think I had any choice but to hit the notes, so I had to result to forceful behaviors that have turned into bad habits. I am now in the process of going through a 4-month embouchure overhaul to fix everything that I've got going wrong, and it's the most frustrating thing in the world because I am literally playing like a middle school student right now.

Although there is a lot of truth to the statement, "The only way to get good at playing high, is by playing high." I was just caution you to always be aware of what you are physically doing to achieve those notes, and hopefully you have a lesson teacher or a smart band director that can help you out. It's one thing to play a few high notes when your range is developing. It's another when it's balls out high the whole time.

I'm not worried too much about that. My range is high enough so that I won't be killing myself by trying to play high. Also, like you said, I have both a smart director and a smart lessons teacher who will help me. If we do end up playing Kingfishers, I'll make sure I go about it in a smart manner. Thanks for the advice.

Leander did the Hindemith last year. It was such a fun piece to play, and Hindemith is a genius. Good luck playing it!

And Sheherazade was definitely spectacular, although I heard it wasn't as good as rehearsal (which boggles my mind at how good it must have been there ;)).

I HATE Gould's Symphony for Band.

I almost had to play that at Church band, but my director said it was too long, so we played Eric Whitacre's Equus :D

To revive this topic...on a completely different note:

Is anyone here an upper woodwind who's done "Ride," by Hazo? If so, what upper ww's require double-tonguing?

All woodwinds except bassoons have at l;east a measure or two with double touging in them.
