bluebellbrass07 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Recent discussion on the forums has me interested in what makes people really enjoy a marching show. So... List your favorite high school marching show (please try to keep it below 2 or 3) and tell us all why you enjoy it so much. I'll start My favorite is Bell 2001. Its just plain fun to watch! You can just feel a huge amount of energy coming off the field. The show is fairly simple by todays standards, nothing to think about, just high intensity drill and fast and loud music. The last 30 seconds drill wise is pretty awesome as well. Next would be Bell 2008 for the simple fact that the music book is definitely the most entertaining I've ever heard. Its got a bit of everything, nice chorale at the beginning, fast and loud after that, a beautiful ballad, a tear you face off section, and a company front to top it off at the end. The concept/story of the show is also very intriguing Lastly, I'll go with Richland 2005. Again, I just love the music in this show. Its pretty straight-forward as far as show design but its really well done and very entertaining. Sax soloist at the end is fantastic Quote
pokerface Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 (edited) I'm going to leave any 2008 shows off of this list since the season and shows aren't totally complete. There's quite a few I like from this year already though. There's so many I love, but there's two shows that I will always view as masterpieces. Reagan 2003 was an overall draw dropper for me. Major props to that design team, they really went all out on this one and pushed those kids to the limit. This was the first year I was really impressed with how Reagan sounded as an ensemble, and so much emotion at that. Could've taken the eagle that year imo, I was definitely fully entertained everytime I got a chance to see it. LD Bell 2006 was WOW. The most emotionally engaging show i've ever witnessed in my time. This was the first real breakthrough year for Bell in terms of design AND music execution coupled together. They had execution and design in the past, but aside from some dirty drill both were in top form this year. I could listen to and watch this show over and over and over again. Had Broken Arrow not had the performace of their life in finals, they would be competing for their 3rd eagle in a row. Edited November 10, 2008 by pokerface Quote
Fata1 Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Bell 2006 gets the win for me. I absolutely loved the Remaining. The first time I saw it, I was fixated to the screen. When the silk sheet started going over the field and the crowd got silent, I got chills. I still get chills. I never get tired of watching that show. It's easily the most entertaining show, to me personally, that I've ever seen. Another show that I like a lot is Spring 1993. The thing about that show that makes me love it is simply the horn part in the fourth movement of Symphonic Metamorphoses. Everything gets quiet and the horns come in with their big part and it's just a line of horns marching towards the crowd. There are a lot of other shows that I like but Bell 2006 and Spring 1993 are two that I will keep coming back to. Quote
bluebellbrass07 Posted November 10, 2008 Author Posted November 10, 2008 Crockett 1993. Unbelievable. I hate you Quote
pokerface Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Crockett 1993. Unbelievable. That's still a really painful year to remember for a lot of kids, tragic for everyone involved. They will be remembered as one of the greatest ensembles in the history of marching band though. Quote
Montoya Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 Crockett 1993.... my sophomore year!! Quote

Look, there's really no point in venturing into the details of that year. They were phenomenal, it unfortunately ended the way it did, period. Please get back on track and lets continue with the original question/topic. Thanks. Quote

GuitarJoe Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) Westfield 1995 - One of my favorite Barber shows. PCEP 2001 - Band in a box. Nuff said. Union 2003 - You could only get the full effect if you saw it at night, but it was definitely cool. Bell 2003 - IMO the last of the old school LD Bell "Play Loud, March Fast" shows. Best cymbal line ever. Edited November 11, 2008 by GuitarJoe Quote

Plymouth-Canton 2001 is probably my favorite marching show of all time. I don't think I've ever seen that many visual effects in one show. It abundantly satisfies both the eyes and ears. Absolutely fantastic and extremely classy. I had several seizures and self-induced heart attacks watching Union 2003 live at the Arlington Regional. The interesting thing about that particular performance is that some of the awesome E-Plume effects were done completely by accident! hissssssssss! You boo puppets!!!!!!! You hiss villains in silent movies!!!!!!! (One dollar to Seinfeld.) Quote
treblemaker Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 PCEP '99 is still one I hold close to my heart. Though I never saw it in person I stumbled upon it a few years ago and loved it before I knew of it's real significance. Churchill 2002 - I really liked this show even though I thought I wouldn't. When I saw Aledo do it this year it made me smile. Quote

bluebellbrass07 Posted November 11, 2008 Author Posted November 11, 2008 How could I forget the Lassiter Wind and the lion show (98 I think?) That music is freaking awesome, I'm playing it in my college wind ensemble right now Quote
pokerface Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 (edited) I hope you aren't just commenting on their attractiveness... I see where your mind wanders to first! Haha, I knew most of them personally! They were darn good at what they did! Edited November 11, 2008 by pokerface Quote

I agreed with GuitarJoe, that was the best cymbal line ever. I never commented on what they look like, you started that whole bit. You jump on me and try to make me out to be some kind of perv? G.T.F.O. kthx. I know those girls from 2003 and think they were an AWESOME part of what made the band unique. I still talk to some of them today and i'm willing to bet you couldn't name one. Like I said, I see where your mind wanders to first. Edited November 11, 2008 by pokerface Quote
