eNVy Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Kinda random question (and it isn't a texas band) but what was Avon's show about? I saw a small clip on youtube and pulled a tarp that said "don't make me come down there~God". I was ultraconfused so if anyone can tell me that would be great. Quote
dmbalash Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Their show title was MassIVe. There was 4 parts to the show: I. Critical Mass II. Weapons of Mass Destruction III. Mass Media (where the flags/banners fit in) IV. Mass Exodus Quote
takigan Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 My interpretation was that it combined basic religious ideas with.....I dunno, pop culture and conspiracy theory? It's pretty abstract I'd say. I never bothered worrying about what a show is about. People feel like there has to be a reason to fine art, and generally feel turned off to it when they can't find it, somehow feeling they don't have the intelligence to understand it. So many people last year asked what L.D. Bell's show was about....and of course it's heavily inspired by Pan's Labyrinth. So people turned to Pan's Labyrinth in hopes to better understand a more concrete idea of what the show was about. I've never seen Pan's Labyrinth and I have no desire to. I feel like it would ruin the impression I received from watching Bell's show for the first time and how it resonated with me personally each subsequent time of watching it. Quote

Man... that's such a shame. That movie is FANTASTIC! Truly one of the best that year. Quote
eNVy Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 montoya-agreed. one of my favs. ~i do think that art can be viewed more than one way, but i also believe a story line drives theme which drives a show (dosen't need narration to do that though ) my perfect example is faust because phantom regiment connected to the crowd by portraying a story. i just feel that the more relatable the theme is the more successiful the show is with GE (not to mention with some kick butt fundamentals! ) Quote

As far as Avon's show, Michael Boo wrote a really nice review of it on the BOA website somewhere, and it helps explain the story pretty well. All I really remember from it is that the end was supposed to represent anarchy and thats why everyone sprinted off the field. I definitely didn't get the show the first time I watched it... Quote

Here's Mr. Boo's review: Quote 1st place: Grand National Champion - 97.75Avon HS Outstanding General Effect Outstanding Visual Performance (tie) "Mass-IV-e in Four Movements" playfully investigated various whimsical permutations of the show's title. The band reached "Critical Mass" right from the beginning, causing tempers to flare, with the consequence being "Weapons of Mass Destruction." Military-like movements inharmoniously interpreted the sacred strains of "Ave Maria," with weapons and warlike visuals, ultimately resulting in a giant mushroom cloud. "Mass Media" addressed God's take on what's going on down here on earth, with humorous asides as, "I'll make it rain on your parade. (Retractable roof or not.)" "Mass Exodus" began as an anarchistic breakdown of the band by assorted individuals who just ran out the tunnel, soon followed by the entire band, putting the final massed stamp on the show that earned the highest score ever awarded in a Grand Nationals Finals. takigan Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Is that really what the show was about or was that just his own interpretation? He uses the term "anarchistic", but I don't think that term in itself inherently relates to the concept within the show. Quote
eNVy Posted December 23, 2008 Author Posted December 23, 2008 does anyone know the repertoire for the 4 movements? just curious since it was such a successful show. Quote
