Excerpts from The Dynamic Drum Major (Holy Grail for Drum Majors):

During a parade, the drum major will salute as he approaches the reviewing stand and will hold the salute position until he has passed it (approximately six steps before and after).

He must also be aware of the location of reviewing stands, television cameras, and the larger concentrations of people along the parade route to ensure that the band is playing at the most appropriate times.

I can't remember if the band was playing while crossing the Presidential Viewing Stand or not. In a military style parade, it could be considered disrespectful if you turned away from your band while they were playing. The same can also be said if your band wasn't playing at the time of crossing the main viewing stands. Many Drum Majors from high school programs that marched in the Inaugural Parade saluted the President as they crossed. It really depends on what type of organization you're involved in.

I still have the book, despite suffering extensive water damage. The camp was great! I loved staying just seconds away from the Huntsville Unit. Fry, Piggy.
