Danpod Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 http://www.musicforall.org/Programs/Regionals/ The lists are up. Five Texas bands are lined up to appear at Grand Nationals (Clear Brook, L.D. Bell, Marcus, Richland, and The Woodlands). It'll be interesting to see whether all of these programs will be in Class AAA or AAAA. Needless to say, you can probably ship the award for Outstanding Musical Performance in Finals to Flour Mound nine months in advance. Currently, there are fewer than 45 programs signed up for the San Antonio Super Regional. This means that not only would there be 12 Finalists instead of 14, the same judging panel would be used for Prelims and Finals rather than having two different panels. Quote
Xenon Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Wow! This is going to be a monster year for competition in the GN Music caption! Finally, we will get to see how Marcus and LD Bell stack up at the end of the year at GN. In 2007, Marcus beat Bell at each BOA competition that they both attended (even attaining the highest BOA Regional score ever) but Bell ended up winning it all at BOA GN. We'll never know how those two shows would have compared if they both met up at the end of the season, but at least this year we will have the chance to have the straight comparison! Quote

Couldn't agree more! Should be a real treat for the ears on Finals night. A couple of side notes: - Cypress Falls H.S. and Birdville H.S. are signed up for the St. Louis Super Regional. - Americas H.S. is signed up for the Las Vegas Regional. - Montwood H.S. is signed up for the Los Angeles Regional. - Jackson Academy from Mississippi is signed up for the San Antonio Super Regional. If you've never seen these kids perform, you are in for a real treat! Quote
rpd Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 Hmm. It appears the Houston regional will be the "lighter" regional this year, like Arlington was last year. This year though Arlington is STACKED. They have 6 of the state finalist and The Woodlands who would have likely have been a finalist. I also noticed Lafayette HS is performing at the Houston regional. I would like to the see them as well. Quote

Really? I bet maybe LC or MC may have something to say about that? Not that Marcus isn't good, but they have never competed against the Indy powerhouses or many other GN finalists. I think things will sort out, but it might be a bit early to say that. Quote

euphownz Posted March 21, 2009 Posted March 21, 2009 (edited) Ahhh!!!!!!!!!!! These lists make me so excited for marching season!!!! XD I can't wait. Arlington will be like a mini-super regional. (If were refering to just the finals part.) I'm also very excited about the line-up for houston. Don't get me wrong, I like having major competition like the two best in the state, but it'll be nice not to have a shoe-in for first place. I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think there are ever any shoe-in's in marching band. A lot of people think there are "guarantees" every season before anyone has announced any kind of whisper about a single show. Sure there are always going to be bands that stick in your mind as having a really good past few years, but I believe that until you have seen their 2009 field production you cannot reasonably know what is going to happen. Even with top bands things could go wrong, someone could trip and cause a massive collision possibly preventing their band from making finals or placing in the top 3 at State. Also just because a band has a successful recent past does not automatically mean their upcoming season is going to be as good as the last. There is a whole new group of kids and and whole new show. Things happen. To provide an example you could look at Reagan. Ask anyone 4 years ago if they could be stopped and 99.9% of the time they would have said no. Look at them now, instead of being at the top of the finalist bands they are towards the bottom. You also never know when some band will come from the shadows and become top dog. Where was Marcus 4 or 5 years ago? They were making finals but mostly in the bottom 5 or so. No where near the level they have become now. Every band works hard to be where they are and they don't win because of their name. They win because of what they put on the field. Okay that was my rant. Quote

Okay that was my rant. true. but, reagan did have a school split plus staff changes. and it's not like there bad or anything. they are still making finals at BOA events. they may not be as high up as they were in let's say 2003, but give it a few years when their staff regenerates. the whole good from year-to-year comes from consitency as well as a stable program. On the point of directors, i don't think any high, state level directors will leave anytime soon. i doubt ms drinkwater is going anywhere considering she helped marcus rise to two back2back state championships or any elite director for that matter....good point, but marcus, LD, and many more great programs seem to have quite a solid foundation right now. takigan Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Wow, Cy Creek is going to BOA Houston. Didn't see that one coming. Looks like Cy Fair is back in the game....and Round Rock? I'm liking the new faces this year. Quote

You also have to remember Westfield. They won GN in 2003 and then without any director change or school split, the very next year they never made it out of the bottom half of Finals at a Regional and have never been back since. Quote
bluebellbrass07 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Wow Bell's going for the 5th year in a row! How they manage to raise the money for that each year is remarkable...the band always did have a ton of support from the community when I was there though. I'm also very excited to see Marcus finally going. Hopefully they can keep up their momentum from the past few years of awesome shows Quote
the terminator Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 hmm, i thought we were going to do BOA next year, but it looks like it won't happen. oh well better to focus on state marching contest anyways Quote
the terminator Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 and man i am pumped to see marcus and ld bell go head to head in Indy next year. Quote
takigan Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Yeah, it'll be an interesting showdown. I'm also interested to see who'll get 3rd place.....now that's anybody's game . Quote

MaverickBand15 Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Round Rock is going to San Antonio...that should be interesting. I don't go there, but i wouldn't count them out. Quote

And even if they did go, I don't think it'd be the same Lassiter that we know and love. I don't think they have the capability to win nationals by 2 whole points like they used to. Quote

Looking at Houston I do see that 9 of last year's 10 finalists will be back and will add Cedar Park who finished 2nd at BOA Arlington last year and 4th in state. Also add to this year Bowie (5th in state) and Vista Ridge (state participant) and you have the makings of an awfully entertaining day! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote
takigan Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Cypress Creek is a good group, and they're better than they used to be. They used to be an unstable group, often getting various ratings at UIL, though lately they've been a consistent Div 1 group. They didn't make finals in their Area this past Fall though they did well. Why I point them out is because I believe this is their first BOA competition, and they're one of the older schools in the city of Cypress. Langham Creek, Cy-Fair, Jersey Village, Cy-Falls, Cy-Springs, Cy-Woods, Cy-Ridge, Cy-Ranch, Cy-Lakes and Cy-Creek are all good schools in the financially affluent city of Cypress and they all have very good programs, but they mostly don't do any contests beyond the UIL circuit and maybe an invitational or two. Cy-Falls has been a perennial BOA competitor for a while now, Langham has made several appearances over the years, Cy-Fair has shown up a couple times.....Cy Springs played in the BOA Concert Band Festival a few years back but I don't think they've ever appeared in one of their marching competitions. Other than that, the remaining bands either haven't been around long enough to develop a BOA program (of that list, 4 of those schools have been built in the last 5 years and I believe they're all 5A now) or they've been UIL purists. That's why I think doing BOA is a big deal for a school like Cy Creek. Quote
CFadrian10 Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 i can't wait for BOA Houston! so many good bands, i can't wait to see Reagan back! Quote
