Xenon Posted November 1, 2009 Author Posted November 1, 2009 And now for some quick impressions from last night. William B Travis - Extremely exciting and well thought out show and the marchers exude GE in their every action. Flower Mound - Very big band with some really exciting music. Big (I mean huge) pipes in the back exude smoke at the end. Lake Highlands - What an amazing sax player! The inclusion of "Lex" and "Every Breath You Take" (the stalker love song by The Police) into this gangster show was genius. Mansfield - Hardest marching of the night, and while it was so hard that it was dirty as an ensemble, all the individuals looked amazing. TW: College Park - First time I've gotten to see you live and y'all can really play. I feel like the design of the marching is what is holding the scores down right now even though it is well executed. Pflugerville - Extremely powerful and resonant sounds! The crowd really loved the windmills and the plume change to enter the water section. Haltom - The concert French Horn solo and the two swirl moves stole my heart. The entire crowd gasped in awe of the swirl changing colors as the band did a contagion 360 in it. Berkner - Such a great complete show; both powerful and moving, all the while the colorguard is the exact compliment of everything else going on, unexpectedly filling the field with gorgeous color during the ballad from long poles that hid huge streamer flags. Hebron - Hebron used to be all about the visual, but wow have they turned on the music this year! The interweaving rhythms really shined through in this open air stadium as opposed to the boomy Alamodome. Plano East - The best sounding Plano East that I've ever heard! Absolutely gorgeous show all around, but the absolute climax for me was when they played Clare de Lune with an entire section of Concert French Horns sitting down and taking the lead. Richland - Great performance in all aspects; very clean, tight, and exciting. The chords to the back corner are gorgeous and the guard keeps getting better and better at the extremely hard Marcus - Since BOA San Antonio, they've added Part 6 to their show. And... Wow.... When I heard it, my jaw hit the ground floor of the stadium all the way from the press box. The double tonguing and trumpet runs in this section (at the END of the show) are nonstop. It still needs some clarity work (by Marcus' extremely high standards), but I can't believe they still have two more whole weeks to clean and add even more stuff into the show before BOA Grand Nationals. At BOA Grand Nationals, Marcus will be winning the Music caption without a doubt and I really think that LD Bell has a serious shot at being the first Texas band to ever win the Visual caption. Quote

Mellophone77 Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Lol, I'm not surprised they looked and sounded. Their show was really good this year. I'm more surprised that they beat most of the bands from Area last year (Mansfield, Hebron, even Berkner even though they aren't in our area). Anyways, congrats to all bands there! Quote
Pseudonym Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Thank you for all your kind words about Plano East, everyone! We've worked hard this year to be able to become better and I believe we've made a step in the right direction in providing you all with some better competition. Look out for us next year at Area, we plan on taking it up another level. (; I really enjoyed Lake Highland's jazzy show! The saxophone soloist was incredible, even if it was a written solo. Very nicely written for the drill, and a very cool prop to feature him on! Does anyone know how to go about buying a DVD of the DMI? I know they were selling them at the contest, however I didn't get the chance to buy / order one, I didn't have my wallet on me at the time. Quote

He took my basic skeleton and made it completely his own. Just wanted to give the man his props! Quote
Mellophone77 Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Ugh, now I wish I got the chance to go to this contest >.< Were video cameras allowed into the contest so I can expect some youtube videos of some of the bands? Lol On a unrelated note, another person from Plano on the forum! There aren't that many that know about this website, lol. Quote
Axiom Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Wow everyone did so well, it was good to see so many bands perform. Marcus shot through the roof as usual, TW:CP did great I thought, Hebron was pretty good as usual, and Travis came out of nowhere on steroids compared to last year. Great job everyone! Quote

The William B Travis show, Bravo, certainly was a crowd pleaser. Kudos to kids, the show's directors and designers for competing at a dynamic level with such a young band. The Travis program only has 1 way to go, and that is up. In 2009, the Travis Tiger Band lost 15 seniors to graduation, and picked up ~ 60 freshman. In 2010, they will graduate 30 seniors, and the 2 middle school programs that are feeding into the Travis zone (one of the MS's partially feeds into SFA) are stacked up with kids that want to play in the TTB. These guys will be a major force in a couple of years. Congratulations to all of the programs on their great seasons and shows, and best wishes to Marcus, Bell, Clear Brook, Bowie, TWHS, & Richland at Grand Nationals! Quote

Well you sure have them on your favorites list haha. I have to agree with you. I loved watching their show. Definitely a new touch to the southern Texas marching band scene. I read a comment here (I think last year?) that they were marching in Austin high's shadow, and I think that's definitely not the case anymore. Don't get me wrong, they're still really talented, but to say that William B. Travis is in anyone's shadow is an understatement. Edited November 4, 2009 by Axiom Quote

I think its going to be really interesting to see what their drill writer has in store for them next year. I get the feeling that this show is going to be a pretty hard show to top for them, even going so far as to have their contras jazz running, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can pull out of their bag for next year Quote

Congratulations to all of the bands who competed at DMI this year!! Watching Marcus' show from an audience perspective was amazing! Beautiful drill, music, and a great use of props!! I especially want to congratulate the William B. Travis High School Band! Being a part of a young band program myself (the McKinney Boyd Band program is in its 4th year of exsistence), it was nice to see such a young band perform at such a high caliber! I absolutely LOVED the soloist! Great show and I wish the William B. Travis the best of luck in their future endeavors. In addition, I could not help but notice the Plano East Marching Band! WOW. Very impressive! Despite having not made the finals last Saturday, attending the 2009 Duncanville Invitational was quite the experience! Cannot wait for 5a State next year Again, I wish to congratulate ALL of the bands who competed at DMI! Great job and looking forward to next year!! Quote
