ryan_albert52 Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 (edited) I'm confused. Here is the finals performance order: Hendrickson Legacy Friendswood Newman Smith Hays Poteet Dripping Springs Waxahachie Wakeland Forney Are the first 5 finalist spots reserved for the bottom 5 bands in prelims, and the last 5 spots for the top 5 bands in prelims? Or is it completely random? Congratulations to everyone today btw. GO BAND! Edited November 3, 2009 by ryan_albert52 Quote

HHSEuph Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Congratulations to all bands. It was a very tough year and I am sure everyone in that dome should be proud of themselves. Congratulations to all medalists. Got to see Dripping and Friendswood and both blew my brain off. Great job Quote
titancoaster Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Congrats to all who made it to finals, it was quite a contest! Congrats also goes out to Dripping Springs for taking home the gold, and to Poteet for the Bronze, it was a tough race for the top three. Quote
thegiantbandnerd Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 wow what a finals, always keeping it entertaining in 4a state, a huge congrats to dripping springs, a well deserved win for them, also congrats to Friendswood, who took the silver medal last night. Quote
drpericles Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Congrats to all bands that competed, you really entertained me. As a spectator, I was a bit dissapointed with some of the sportsmanship. I stood and watched as Poteet parents, the supposed mature folks, booed the fact that Poteet made third. The Dripping Springs excitement was also a little bit over the top (I know they were excited but to me it came off as arrogance). I hear that Hendrickson cheered for Dripping Springs as they got off the bus, and this made me very happy because I am certainly aware that it was hard for Hendrickson to accept. I didn't mean for this to be offensive in any way. Quote

Unless you heard or saw students from that school say or do something specifically arrogant, how can it come off that way? In terms of competition, the school has covered a ridiculous amount of ground in such a short time. I can completely understand their excitement, as long as they behaved themselves in a classy manner. From what I saw, I thought that they did. Quote

The kids were understandably disappointed (defending a title is a thankless task), but the band and parents alike were good sports. Many gave Dripping Springs a standing ovation when they were announced. Quote

One parent does not necessarily speak for the entire program. Sanchez and I were around Poteet parents all day long and they were quite amiable. They were respectful while other programs were on and often remarked about how awesome the performing programs were. Quote
Basefiveftw Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 As a current senior in the Dripping Springs band, I can attest for the feelings we shared last night. We knew we had performed really well, the best we had all season, but figured we would be lucky to be top 5, which would still be up from two years ago. (I'm not trying to sound arrogant AT ALL, and I truly apologize if it comes off that way). When they announced the first two bands, we all assumed that we hadn't made it. That is why we utterly erupted when they announced us. (On a side note, our directors refused to tell us how we stacked up in prelims, so we had no idea how we were doing). On behalf of my fellow band members, I would like to congratulate all of the bands that made it to that level of competition, and I truly and sincerely apologize if we seemed a bit overreactive. I hope that there are no hard feelings between us and anyone else. No one wants to be "that band..." Quote

I saw their drum major run across the field, throw down the trophy and go into a "that's what I'm talking about pose" I understand that they won state, but I'm just saying as a specator they seemed a bit overboard. And I still applaud Hendrickson for being classy to Dripping Springs. Quote

I know if I was in their position, I would do the same thing because it is my first instinct. Maybe I am wrong, but as long as they didnt come off as arrogant (I didnt see it, who knows, I am sure they didnt), then thats ok. Quote

However, I observed immature acts from nearly every program's parents that were in Finals, including Hendrickson's. That's the nature of the State Marching Band Contest. It's the perfect storm of exhaustion, intensity, and parents who still think this activity is about them. Quick lesson from Danpod: Jumping up and down because your program/kid's program did well = Cool. Jumping up and down, squealing with delight, and basically celebrating the fact that another program placed lower than your kid's = Not cool. I find the preceding incident very classless at the State Marching Contest because they only announce the medalists at the stadium, which means that you have absolutely no idea how you did until after the event. If I could write a book about how to act in the stands and the crazy stuff I've seen band parents do, I would. Somehow, I think only about 20 people would bother to open the cover, much less purchase it =) Quote

They're from our Area, kind of like a sibling, it was an extremely close competition at Area, and we were truly congratulating them. They deserved it. Quote
luckyace007 Posted November 5, 2009 Author Posted November 5, 2009 dripping srpings was beast this year, they were beast even at their first contest idk how friendswood and dripp like completely switched from prelims to finals Quote

I know that all of us at Dripping feel the same about you guys... Had our places been switched, we would definitely have similar sentiments. I'll never forget at area two years ago when Hendrickson's drum major came over and congratulated us for making state. It was one of the nicest gestures I've ever seen from another band, and I will always remember it. Quote

Normally they do, but this time they told us we got 4th due to judges preference essentially tying with Poteet and finishing 1 behind Dripping Springs. Then, when we found out we got 6th in finals and we were kind of bummed, not because we thought we deserved better, but because we had shown during prelims that we were capable of placing higher. Don't get me wrong, we are extremely happy to have gotten sixth in the state behind some amazing programs (Dripping Springs, Friendswood, Poteet, Wakeland and Hendrickson). On a side note, i don't think Dripping Springs was arrogant. I saw their drum major pretty much drop their trophy but i didn't think it was anyway out of line. Congrats to everybody who competed yesterday on a job well done. Quote
