xylojet Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Ahh, we were so close to making finals (although there weren't really finals, due to storms). 11th place. But our percussion got 3rd place within decimals of Marcus and .1 from Keller. And our colorguard went from about 12-16th at ToC to 6th here, so they made a vast improvement. I think all of these competitions are ruining the confidence of our band. what school do you go to? Quote

Not sure yet if we are even going to have a Finals since the whether only looks to get worse. 5A Prelims Results: Best Colorguard - Colleyville Heritage Best Percussion - Marcus Best General Effect - Marcus Best Visual - Keller & Hebron Best Music - Marcus 1) Marcus 2) Hebron 3) Sachse 4) Keller 5) Colleyville Heritage Finalists: Exhibition 2A: Cisco Exhibition 3A: Argyle 7:15 - Legacy 7:30 - Martin 7:45 - Northwest 8:00 - Lake Highlands 8:15 - Mansfield 8:30 - Colleyville Heritage 8:45 - Keller 9:00 - Sachse 9:15 - Hebron 9:30 - Marcus In the confusion, Best Visual was actually won outright by Hebron Quote

Although we didn't make finals, there's no where to go but up. Hopefully we'll make finals at Duncanville. Guess I'll see you there too! lol Quote

What happened was that the Visual caption was announced as Keller winning it outright. Then everything else was announced all the way up through 2nd place being Hebron. Then we waited and waited and waited while Marcus parents started to get a bit nervous that something was wrong. Finally, Marcus was announced in 1st place followed shortly thereafter by an announcement that the Visual caption was actually shared by Keller and Hebron. It looks like they allowed Keller to keep a share of the Visual caption since they were announced originally, but Hebron actually won it outright. Quote
Xenon Posted October 4, 2009 Posted October 4, 2009 Here's a partial review of some of what I think were highlights of the Birdville festival. The morning was nice and sunny (you could really feel it beating down on you) but the afternoon started getting cloudy and windy. And then the rain broke out. Right in the middle of Marcus' performance. Finals was canceled due to the rain which made everyone still in the stands very happy. Winnsboro - Nightwatch - I really love the huge Trojan plume that extends way down past the bottom of the helmet. This band had a really confident air for early in the season and that confidence translated itself into all of the rest of the performance. The guard had various spooky eye flags. As the show went on, all of the band eventually removed their jackets and came back out as a completely black uniform. And then they turned around and had the spooky eyes on their backs with all the spooky eye flags waving. Boyd - The Secret Garden - At first I thought this show was going to be about the book/movie; they even had a saxophone soloist in a wheelchair. But then they started off with "Let there be light!" with a big display of sun flags and described heaven during the ballad with nice white flags. Argyle - efx - The reigning 3A State Champion. And boy did they show off why! The music for this show is from Churchill's show of the same name and pulls a lot of drill and guard design from it as well. But just because things are copied doesn't mean that they can't still be great; Argyle pulls off an amazing performance of an incredible difficult show. The show starts fast and furious with tons of powerful open rhythmic hits, fast drill, pulls, saws, and musical runs from section to section. They even had a nice rifle feature right on the 50 counting the turns of the rifles in the air. Legacy - Signal to Noise - Remember all the electronics last year? Well there's even more this year, and it isn't cheesy at all, but very effective and well done. A lot of little clips from last year make cameo appearances including Dan Potter and some short clips of the backwards speak, but the overall point seems to be that electronics can enhance and bring extra colors and effects that when used properly can only add to a show. The show starts with classics played mostly straight up but the sounds evolve as the show goes on as does the period of the piece being played, finally ending with John Adams. Timberview - The Divine Comedy - Awesome sounds all around! They may not have put you in the back of your seat from pure volume, but they drew power from pure precision and tuning. You could hear everything so extremely clearly. I don't understand how this band did not win the 4A Music caption. Abilene Cooper - Down Under - Didgeridoos from the drum major podium, duck calls, cartoon style jumps and body movements, and Australian aboriginal chants from a West Texas band! Mansfield - Echoes Reflected - See the Carrollton TOC review at live.txbands.com for more details. The preshow THX theme caught the audience's attention. Everything seemed to hold together musically a lot better today and the drill worked a lot better but is so hard that it is going to take forever to clean it. The musical phrasing in the ballad was beautiful. Sachse - Wanted - Sachse takes us out to the wild West with a classic Western tragic love story. They have a windmill on the left, some fences on the right, and some two-story (!) storefronts in the back field. The saloon fell over due to the strong wind before the show started but when it was time for them to be announced, instead of announcing them, John Pollard came over the stadium PA and told them to "Feel free to fix the prop". The whole crowd cheered when the saloon was back in operation. At the start of the show, the bad guy (in all black of course) comes out while the pit plays Bon Jovi's Wanted Dead or Alive followed by the hero cowboy who get's an upbeat western tune. And then the love interest in a long red dress comes out and starts teasing each of the soloists, taking their hearts and leaving them with something red (red shako and plume for the trumpet and red drum for the snare) for the rest of the show. Then the whole band line dances while the characters meet and have fun at a party leading up to the ballad love with the cowboy, broken up right at the climax of the big chord by the bad guy. The ensuing gun duel ends up with the love interest being shot by both men leading into the final battle where the cowboy eventually emerges the victor, but of what really? It was a really cool show, well thought out, well played, and solidly marched all around (and it showed in their 3rd place finish right behind Hebron), but other than giving a good Western feel, I think that the props tended to get in the way of the drill and really hindered some of the visual design. Trinity - Machine - Wow! This isn't the best show in the world, by far, but give this band the trophy for the most improved band of the year, they deserve it! Mario Casanova has done a great job in turning around this program in just his second year at the school. I hope to see this band grow even more in the future and hopefully come up to some of the standards set by their sister school LD Bell. The rain really started during Marcus' show, so from here on out I don't have written notes anymore and will just have to go from what I have in my head. Marcus - A Midsummer Night's Dream - From what I could tell, the music all comes from the various pieces that Mendelssohn wrote for this Shakespearean comedy. And that even includes the famous Wedding March. Lots of large papier-m Quote
ryan_albert52 Posted October 5, 2009 Posted October 5, 2009 How are the predictions going to work since there wasn't a finals round? Quote

Actually, we know the order because the order of performance in Finals is actually the reverse placement order. We can just take that to be the Finals results for the purposes of Predictions. Quote
